Has anybody bought it yet? or the XBOX ONE?

I would like opinions of my fellow Boomers think

I've been trying to decide as well. I read an article that said if you're buying it just for game playing, get the PS4. If you want something that does more than game playing (plays music, movies and videos, chatting with other game players and friends, etc., etc. and takes voice commands) Get Xbox One. For me, since I don't want all those other things, but do want a great gaming experience, I'm liking PS4.

Would it be a good idea to wait a bit and see if something is kinda wrong with them? But whatever, I will buy a PS4 and befor Feb 8......that's my goal. Believe me I'm dying to play Shadowfall. Budget permitting I'll get both however the connect thing with X box isn't appealing at all. Maybe it can be blanked out.

I'm not planning on buying either one, but if I were, I'd wait and let them shake some of the new release bugs out. Seems like new system always have problems for a bit after release. wave

My plan is to ask Santa, I have PS3 and I am very happy with it, I only want it to play games, nothing else.

If for Christmas time it is not clear if they are working well I will accept an IOU from Santa and wait a little bit longer.

If anyone gets it before Christmas please post your experience here.

Kinect is the camera and the body movement hardware/software for the Xbox.

At one point, Microsoft had talked about using it to be sure the person playing the game was the one who bought it, but they backed off that as well as their "you must connect via the net at least once every 24 hours" that they first announced. wave

Some players believe it's also a spying devise........could be, but I would always have this on my mind while playing. Also it can monitor the number of players are using it at one time and somehow charge a fee (?)if too many.....is this really true. It's not their problem as to the number of players.

Also if only the purchaser can use a game what about trade ins and used game?

They want everything their way and I don't like that. Anyway that game Ryse and those Halo games look good too

Happy Santa mcc

Yankee, Microsoft backed off of all those demands as players in droves defected to the PS. My Xbox son just bought his first PS because even though Microsoft backed off, he thought that their original plans were way too controlling.

You can play used games on the new Xbox and you can disable the camera, but I don't know the ease with which those things can be done. wave

The problem is that the reputational damage is done: Microsoft already have a reputation for wanting to say what you can do with your computer. The early announcements about the ubiquitous nature of the Xbox One, and it's capacity for 'spying' on you sounded so much like MS had gone completely over to the 'Dark Side' that I'll never buy an Xbox product, no matter how much they roll back on their statements because I now know that they are willing to consider such strategies, and there's no telling what a future software update could do to the behaviour of the system (now that we know what they consider it to be capable of!)

p.s. I heard the worst strap-line for an advert yesterday. Microsoft Windows: "the same experience on every device." I so don't want the same Microsoft experience on every computing device. Can you imagine how frustrating and lowest-common-denominator that would be?

Gremlin, that is just exactly how my son feels. He's been Xbox all the way since the original, but no more. I can't think what Microsoft was thinking.

I had the thought of PS4 and it seems I will stick to it unless something is wrong with it, I would not be using Kinect.

And yes, Windows controls too much of my life already scared

Do all the new PC games require steam valve download? Why can't we just buy the game and play the darn thing. For example Space Marine game looks so good and it's sitting on my desk due to computer gymnastics required to play. And besides it should be our choice to join steam or not to. So There Steam. I hope you never slither your way into the consoles.

I was hesitant to install Steam, but now I can't imagine playing games without it. All the games I might want are available in one spot for easy download. I have bought games from Amazon and activated them on Steam just to have them all in one location. The games you buy from Steam are already updated so you don't need to worry about that and if you don't want them to be updated in the future, you can turn it off. Best of all are the sales occurring several times a year. The bargains are downright amazing. I did buy a couple boxed games a while ago that had to be activated on Steam to play. I thought it was a fairly simple process well explained on the Steam site.

It's the condition that it's forced upon the player. We spend money for a game and can't wait for it to get here and then all these rules. If steam were so good players would rush to join. While installing steam I gave an email I knew wasn't working -mine doesn't work, for some reason- and steam got mad then I got mad and so the standoff. The extras st. offers I don't want-I don't need. If a player evolves he/she knows what they like and sales aren't important.

Being an old school gamer I was reluctant to try my first Steam title a few years ago, also there is a bit of the "Cant teach old dogs new tricks" aspect with me and I'd hate to be that way so shrugged that off and went for it, but I was worrying about nothing, there are more Pro's than Con's with Steam IMHO.

One Pro was after my recent unexpected PC crash and rebuild, all my games are backed up including configs and game saves ready to be downloaded again, or if bandwidth is low, just install from the CD and Steam will patch it up for you.

The sales are good if you are on a budget and you are even allowed to sell on your Steam games nowadays, heck Steam will even check to see if your hardware has the latest drivers if you set it up that way as well as check for game updates.

I was reluctant to use Steam for many years, too, and that's why I didn't get to experience Half Life 2 until recently. My prejudice against Steam vanished when I bought some game or another a couple of years ago - can't remember which one - that required Steam, and it all developed quite naturally, linking me automatically to the Steam site and asking me to download Steam, and so I did. Now I'm really happy with Steam and rarely have problems with it.

I have a PS4 I bought off my son as he preordered it due to the Microsoft blunder (although he since has purchased the ONE as they have rolled back much of their demands)but I have not really played anything on it yet.
With that said I have fooled around with the unit some and I do like the feel of the controllers much better than the PS3 controllers and better than the ONE controllers.
The screens load considerably faster than the PS3 and are beautiful on the big HD screen. It is very obvious it has much more processing power then the PS3. I understand the PS4 will play 1080P and I can believe that. My sons ONE will do 720P and I do notice the difference even on the screens outside of any games.
The browser is much faster than the PS3, although it does not support Flash so YouTube videos won’t play and there is no app like on the PS3.
It only reads plays blue ray disks so games will be in that format.
You do need to join the PlayStation Plus to access the internet which is an extra cost per year.
I was hoping "The Witness" would be out soon after launch but no go for that game yet. Some of the bigger ticket games such as Destiny, Final Fantasy 15, Kingdom Hearts 3 has been delayed (Destiny until September 2014 which is the one I was most interested in - the others until sometime in 2015). This also applies to the ONE for many of the games too. I will probably start playing on the PS4 when Final Fantasy 14 comes out for the PS4. My daughter plays 14 now on the PS3 and quite a few times in a busy area players and mobs do not load and the 'fight' is over before she even knows anything is going on so it will be interesting to see what the difference the PS4 will make.
My son absolutely does not like the Kinect and finds it very intrusive and was not aware it could be removed to play games. It can even tell who a person is just by how it learns how you walk around and will say hello to either my son or his wife and startle them at times. They told me it was "creepy"
An amusing item with the ONE - my son will be playing a game and his wife will tell the dog to get 'off' of a piece of furniture and the ONE unit will acknowledge her word 'off' and turn off in the middle of his playing. Needless to say he is working to have the machine learn only his voice commands.
Sorry for the long post (I feel strangely verbose today) and not really say much other than there is not much out game ways for either unit.

RNL, love the "off" story as that is what we tell our doggies too. I could just imagine that at a critical moment. wave12

Isn't PlayStation Plus optional? With the PS3 you can sign up to the PSN network for free, which gives you internet access and multi-player capability. Joining the Plus group is an extra service with free games and suchlike. I would hope that the PS4 would be the same?

If you want to play multiplayer on the PS4, you will have to get a PS+ subscription. I was very sorry to hear that since I enjoyed playing multiplayer in Journey and Dark Souls. It wouldn't have been as much fun without it. I believe that multiplayer stays available without subscription in PS3.

Ugh! That's rough. I'll be staying with the PS3 for a good while. (I have to have my daily Journey fix!)
