I am really unable to figure pushing buttons on the fireplace scene. Can you help me with this? Thanks, Betty

Hi Betty,

Did you manage to clean the middle dirty tile? There are 9 tiles in total here.
Have you cleaned the inside of the fireplace and seen 6 tiles similar to those on the mantel?
Click the mantel tiles in this order: 7 4 9 6 2 5

Let us know if you still have problems.

I have cleaned mantle and inside fireplace. However, I still cannot see the tiles. Decided to try again. When I hod the bough, napkin up to the edge of the mantle she says, "This is too slack". Thanks for your help. Betty

I also can't get past this part of the game. Have followed walkthrough but get same message... this is too slack....have tied thread to bough with napkin....can't get the buttons right either...very dark...tried adjusting computer and shadow options in game. Is there any easier way to identify the tiles? Thank you.

Linda,

You might need to raise the brightness of your computer and/or untick the shadows options at main menu.

Be sure that you cleaned the tiles on the floor of the fireplace also. That is your clue.
Then clean that middle tile on the mantel.
Then even if she said that - continue on and:
From left to right, press the mantel tiles in positions: 7 4 9 6 2 5.

Once the tiles are cleaned, you have to press the tiles with the broom or the little shovel. The pictures are very dark indeed in this part of the game, if you can't really see the engravings, use the walkthrough.

I can barely make out tiles. I don't know which is No. 7 tile to press first. Could you possibly send me a saved game? Thanks, Betty

Stand Sylvie a little way over to the right of the block, you'll see that your cursor will change to show that you're in the right area.

What worked for me at this point, was to observe the dark line running across the back inside wall of the hole. As the block starts rising back up towards this line, immediately throw the stone on the crack.

can you be more specific? I can't get Sylvia to stand to the right of the crack. I can't seem to get the rock to drop just at the right time. Thanks for your help. Betty

Move close to the edge - as long as you can position Sophie so that while you are holding the stone over the crack at middle front, the label on top will state "stone+crack", you should be in the right place. As the block moves back up towards the top, click to release the stone. It took me a few tries to get this, so keep at it. Here's a screenshot which may help also:
