Ok, since I upgraded my video card to 7600 GS, my dual boot with Win ME will no longer work because the card doesn't support Win ME - my 5200 supported Win ME.

I had downloaded Virtual PC 2007 but ran into a problem with missing MSXML 6. I googled and found Virtual PC 2004 which is what the FAQ is directed at and am currently printing out the instructions as there is no way to remember everything I must do.

My stupid question is this: Will Virtual PC 2007 work too and if so is it easier to use being newer and which of the MSXML 6 files do I need? I downloaded all 4 of them, they aren't too large. If it will not work as well as Virtual PC 2004, please tell me, and I will try to configure it later today. I have my Install CD in hand and am ready to try.

Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide. If the 2007 will work, perhaps there is a website you can direct me to with instructions to follow. Dumb me thought this would be easy rotfl but nothing is easy but well worth the extra work.

I think the main difference between Virtual PC 2004 and 2007 is that 2007 will work in Vista. As far as I know there is no difference in using them for games -- one is no easier than the other.

Hey Jenny100 wave

This is why I asked, from Virtual PC 2004 FAQ,
"(Note: if you instead get the latest, which is Virtual PC 2007 at the time of writing, then you won't be able to follow the instructions below exactly)"

But it doesn't go on to say what is different. I can tell you that V-PC 2007 said it was missing MSXML 6 but that is as far as I got so far. Stuck at the A: I had to go back and copy the complete FAQ to see what to do next. I also noticed at that time that metzomagic/inferno put in a link to the proper page - sorry, I had missed it so I googled for it.

I still have a computer running Win 98 but I am lazy and prefer to sit at my main computer. I will at least give it a go.

Be well, have oodles of fun Jenny100,
Linda

**edited: Well, I couldn't get my 98se CD to work but I managed to get my Win 95 CD to install and thankfully I have a boot-disk and it worked too. For anyone else trying this, it does take time and I know mine didn't run exactly as the FAQ said but it did work and I installed Golden Gate and it plays!

My heartfelt thanks to Inferno and MetzoMagic for all instructions and support.

Linda praise

I don't know why your Win 98 CD wouldn't work. Even the retail version CD's (which aren't bootable) should work, as long as you have a boot floppy or use the virtual boot floppy download Metzo has. You just use them as you would Win 95 CD's (which are never bootable).

Win 95 should be OK in Virtual PC though. It makes a smaller image file, but should play old games the same.

I've never used Virtual PC 2007, only 2004. I didn't realize there were differences in how you install it. Sorry about that.

Another question/problem.

I installed Win 95 into Virtual PC and went to install Mystery of the Nautilus but I get a codec error. I had already installed the Codec 8 per previous postings for this game when I tried to install and run in XP.

How do I get the Codec file into Win 95?

Thanks,
Linda

I think Mystery of the Nautilus needs either Windows Media Player 7 or Windows Media Player 8. Do you have either of those? You can find old Windows Media Player here
http://oldversion.com/program.php?n=wmp

Nautilus may also need DirectX 8, and I don't know if you can put that on Win 95. Hmmm... You may have to try again with your Win 98 CD if you want to play that particular game.

Thanks Jenny100, my brother-in-law is getting me a bootable CD for 98. Mine came with Ray's old Optiplex and while I installed it on other computers for some reason it doesn't want to go into Virtual PC. However it was a fantastic experience installing 95 into it. Those instructions in the FAQ are wonderful.

thanks Linda

Jenny100, I tried to install Win ME into Virtual PC but I think I got an error message - don't remember what now as that was 2 days ago.

Would you know if it is possible to use ME or is it only for 95 & 98?

At the end of the FAQ Steve addressed additional questions and those helped as well. I ran into the 16 colors problem and Steve gave the solution on the last page I believe. Excellent directions and every step of the way. I did goof by checking the wrong box and leaving networks as I didn't read that until after I passed the step but it still works.

It should be possible to install almost any Windows into Virtual PC. I've read there is a problem with Vista, but Windows ME should work. Do you remember what the error message was? Was it the MSXML error? Also, is your Windows ME disc a retail version? Is it a full version of Win ME or is it a restore disc that's only meant to be installed on a specific brand of computer?

News Flash!!!

There is an unofficial Win98, Win98SE, and ME driver which will work with the GeForce 7600 GS card; I've tested it with Win98SE. The driver, 82.69, was modified from the official 81.98, the last ever nVidia Win98 driver to be released.

This driver can be obtained from
http://www.mdgx.com/files/NV8269.EXE
and is an international version, 14.5Meg file.

This new driver installs just like any other nVidia driver. I've tested it for malware and it is clean and works as advertised.

Thank you very much Robert. A little too late for me as I just reformatted the drive with ME on it duh

A word of caution, in my case I had 2 hard drives each with a different OS and if you use different drivers on the different OS you can wind up with one large headache and a terrible driver loop. Is your driver also compatible with XP? Just trying to save another gamer from an awful headache later.

Again, thank you very much. I should have waited to see what would turn up but after about a week or two I just wiped the drive.

For XP you use the regular drivers on the Nvidia site.

The driver Robert found is one that's tweaked for Windows 98/98SE/ME. You can't find a recent driver for those versions of Windows on the Nvidia site.

To be slightly more exact, nVidia 81.98 is the last Windows 98/98SE/ME driver and it supports up through the 6xxx series of cards. If you have a 7xxx or 8xxx card from nVidia, you must use WinXP or Vista if your driver came from nVidia or any card company that does not create their own drivers. I did not find any 7600 GS drivers for Win98SE from a major card maker.

The driver I found, and one or two others at guru3d.com, have been modified by game enthusiasts who want to play games that don't work with WinXP or just wanted a new video card on their old OS systems. Typically these people have dual boot systems and use normal WinXP drivers with WinXP and the modified drivers with Win98SE or WinME.

You should realize that you can't possibly have any problems of "driver loop" (whatever you mean by that) with a dual boot system because each system sees a single driver not both.
On my dual boot system, WinXP and Win98SE, the WinXP driver is 93.71 for WinXP and the Win98SE driver is the modified 82.69 for Win98SE with the single 7600 GS AGP card.
Originally I was using 91.47 on the WinXP with 45.23 on the Win98SE and a Ti-4200 AGP card.

Trust me when I say, "never say never". This happened to me and I remember it vividly. I have 2 HD, my C: ME, my D: XP and when they had different drivers I got a BSOD display loop error after bootup, sorry but I didn't keep the error message in my book. If it can happen to me it can happen to others. XP sees all drives at all times.
Since then nVidia did come out with a driver that supports 98 and all the updated drivers still worked with my 5200 card. Sadly they didn't with my newer 7600 and knowing that nVidia would likely not update their drivers for the later cards I just formatted both to XP before you mentioned this newer driver.

Going back to the original question now: I got a Win 98 bootable CD and have installed in VM and installed Nautilus without a hitch. The game locks up. So I put the patches onto a CD and carried them to the VM and now it does bypass the Intro but I still lock up. Any suggestions please? Has anyone ever gotten Nautilus to play in VM?

thanks Linda

You might need a codec pack. Check Inferno's post ***here***

Thanks Jenny100. It didn't ask so I didn't offer, lol. Nautilus installed MediaPlayer 7 but didn't ask, just did it. (from Inferno's instructions not to in XP)

I have downloaded the codecs per Inferno's post but will do it again to a CD so I can put it into VM.

Do you have VM installed? Wow, talk about deja vu.

I have VirtualPC 2004 installed on my XP game computer -- played a little of Dark Side of the Moon in it. I don't own Nautilus so can't help much with troubleshooting it.

That's cool. Actually you helped me a lot. I have an older dell with ME on it and it wasn't playing there either. So, I downloaded the codecs to a CD and installed in the other computer and now the game will play in ME. So if you hadn't told me about the codecs again I would still be running from computer to computer.

I had a lot of fun installing VM 2004 but it just wasn't working. I may just redo the VM 2004 Win 98 as maybe a step is missing? Who can say. But after all these years it is nice to finally be moving around the sub Nautilus.

Thank you very much for your kind patience and exquisite help.

thanks Linda
