One solution is to put this phrase....

"Installing 9: The Last Resort on a Newer System"

...into Google and see what pops. It should bring up an article which details which newer systems can run 9 and a link to a zipped installation of critical game files which enable anyone who has a system which can run 9 and who has a 9 CD to play the game.

That's the old version. Newer versions don't have the problem. Of course you can't tell from the box which version it's going to be.

Actually, you can. There were a total of four versions of 9 released. It's just easier to toss in the CD and see if it loads. If it doesn't, looking for the phrase mentioned above will solve the problem. For all systems except XP Pro. No joy there. Ever.

I have a box which originally had the old version (I mailed in the original CD for the exchange) and I have a box that came unopened with an updated version of the game and both boxes look identical. So in my experience, you can't tell from the box.

Zip files are files that have been reduced in size (zipped) so they are easier to move on the net.

There are a number of free and trial zip file openers available, including WinZip and Stuffit.

Or, in the immortal words of Fred Astaire, you could "just call the whole thing off." wink

I stand corrected. It is the CDs and not the boxes that are different. Glad that's settled... wink

I never have any luck with my compatibility wizard on mine for any game. So what is the newer version?

Crazylady, I was referring to the newer version of the game 9 - as Mr Lipid and Jenny100 explained, there are several versions of the game out there!!

Yeah I tried that winzip thing when I was trying to play the 11th hour. Never did figure out how to do that. I think I'll take Fred Astaires' advice on this one. scared

I think there is a problem with the copy "protection" "9" uses in XP. That was certainly the problem I had trying to play it in WineX (a Windows emulator for Linux). Other games that use the 32-bit version of QT 2.12 will usually at least start up in WineX, even if they don't run all that well. But "9" had this stupid copy "protection" problem and would not run at all.

Ahhhh, that's right! But they didn't, did they? Call the whole thing off.

I see a place on crazy lady's shelf reserved for 9, just because....it's been beckoning and won't be denied.

rotfl Boy are you ever right! You been looking over my shoulder. smile I just can't help it! I thought I was the only one that can't keep from getting games I know better than. Good thing is you seem to understand that beckoning. Everybody I know thinks I'm nuts with all the games I have, but someday I'll forget playing them and start all over again. bravo

Sorry I'm so late responding - I was out of town. Well, if you knew me in real life you probably would think I was pretty strange. But, as I said - I got such a feeling of accomplishment when I finally got it that I must have forgotten the frustration. In fact, I just bought a copy of it from ebay so that I could play it again. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

I don't think 9 has any copy protection. It does, however, have some problems with the plumbing in XP Pro.

Lots of people contributed to an experiment to see what flavors of Windows 9 would install and run on and the results suggest it would run on everything from Win95 through XP Home. Just not XP Pro.

I've never tried to play a Windows game via an emulator so I wouldn't be qualified to comment on how a Windows game might behave on Linux.

I think it does - mainly because my brother decided it did after fooling with it for a while. I was unable to make a completely viable CD image using an old imaging program (Disk Dump) that has worked with every other non-copy-"protected" game I've tried it with (as well as a few that were copy "protected." Disk Dump always gave an error toward the end. I could mount the image and play from it in Win 98, but after a certain point fairly late in the game, things didn't trigger as they should have and I couldn't continue.

Odd that copy protection would kick in at the end of the game. I've made an image of 9 with CD Copier and it played with no problem. Then again, 9 is infamously unstable. What appears to be copy protection may, in fact, just be bad coding.

Did you play all the way to the end?
Maybe it is bad coding - unstable on some computers.
But it's strange that Disk Dump gave the error message. I wonder if the replacement CD they sent is bad.
