That is really good news, hagatha! Is his pain location specific or throughout his body? Just curious about what kind of treatment options there are for him.

oldbroad, so happy to hear you were able to get your kitty in! Hopefully getting the meds in her won't be too hard.

hagatha, glad to hear the cancer isn't growing. Sending positive thoughts for pain relief!

It's localized, but it has two causes. The cancer in the spine, obviously, but also during the spinal surgery he was nicked internally and it has never healed, so it's basically an abscess. Because the cancer isn't growing right now, the only reason to subject him to chemo would be for pain management. The problems is that chemo inflames the abscess, so it's a no-win and given that the cancer is dormant at the moment there's really no point.

So right now, he's just on pain meds and a heavy-duty antibiotic, which is basically permanent. He's on Fentanyl patches, methadone (which in this case is used for pain), and hydromorphone. The problem is that we never catch up to the pain. We're always chasing it. Sometimes it's very, very bad and all he can do is lie on the couch and watch sports. Right now he's able to walk, but it's too painful to keep it up for more than a few minutes.

Our doctor has upped the meds a lot today, and if that doesn't help, then he'll try something different from the pharmacological perspective. I've suggested CBD oil, which has been fantastic for the arthritis in my hands, as an adjunct, and since our doctor doesn't think there's a contra-indication he might as well give it a shot. The pain meds can be increased a lot more, but obviously they want to do it in stages.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Just made hubby's weekly biscuits and gravy eggs and bacon Saturday morning breakfast. Time to sit down with a cup of coffee... that Arabic coffee smells good!

hagatha, I also swear by the CBD oil for pain. It helps me keep me going longer between back injections. Hubby swears by it for his back too. Hope you can stumble on something that will help him, especially since the cancer is dormant right now.

First, for me, a cup of strong Chai and then I'll go for some of that Arabic coffee.

I've never had Arabic coffee so I'll try a cup of that.

Hagatha, good luck. I hope they can figure something out to ease the pain.

Three attempts at getting medicine in the cat have failed.

Oldbroad, getting pills into a cat is one of the most frustrating -- and dangerous -- things I've ever tried. Allegedly if you hold the cat's mouth open with one hand you can pop the pill down their throats, but I only ever had a 50% success rate with that.

Maybe the pills can be put into a Greenie treat pocket? I think they still make those.

I'm usually able to use a syringe for liquid meds and crush the tablets in a bit of wet cat food.

You have to be crazy careful giving pills to animals that are stubborn so they don't aspirate it. Never place in the throat, place it on the back of the tongue so they swallow it themselves. A pill can get stuck easily because a cat is not as salivating as a dog is. You can coat the pill in a tiny amount of butter or even fish oil depending on if its a pill, capsule etc. I have to give them to cats that I work for and I know how difficult it is! I've been bit more than once!

This is actually liquid but he still can't hold her, keep her mouth open, and get the medicine down. We have both a syringe type and a dropper type. I'm not sure which one my brother tried. These cats really don't like being held much. (Only my little boy did but not these girls.) Trying to put it in food is iffy because she may not eat it and we have to make sure one of the other cats doesn't eat it, but that is next on the list. She is already avoiding my brother and never was comfortable with the two of us in the same room too close to her so I'm not sure we can do a team thing with her. On the positive side, she sort of seems to be getting better on her own though. She's had this problem already for at least a week.

Maybe you can put the liquid into the cat's food and then put her in a room with the doors closed for a bit so the other cats can't get to the food? Just a small amount of food when the cat seems hungry.

I know these things can get complicated, having been through them myself.

Is there a food that she absolutely adores? My girl is fanatical about halibut and will not stop asking for it until we literally have to chase her out of the kitchen. We did use that once with some success.

A nice traditional breakfast tea sounds good, soot. I have tea first, then coffee, every morning.

And espresso shots -- I start the day with my stove-top espresso every morning. Can't get going without it!

I always have a cup of coffee first and then my tea. Have never tried espresso.

Well, she won't eat the food with the medicine in it and she will no longer go near my brother. He brought some of the medicine up in a small bowl (why in a bowl, I don't know) and told me to dump it on her paw when I was petting her which I tried to do but it didn't pour out fast enough to get much on her. I guess she did get a couple of licks of it though off of her paw. She was suspicious of me already so now I am afraid to try to go near her again to see if she'll even let me near her. The litter box was a mess again today and had blood in it. frown

I would call the vet about all of this and see if they have any other suggestions to offer. If the litter box still has blood in it, that is obviously not a good sign. These kinds of urinary problems in cats (at least in my experience) don't generally go away on their own.

I'm sure poor kitty is in a lot of pain too if she's bleeding. Is this a liquid antibiotic?
