Oldbroad, in the end I decided on coffee and a pastry at my favourite place in Comox, which I've been missing. Comox is actually a very cool town, lots of nice places to eat and a lovely waterfront harbour where you can buy fish on the dock.

The only downside to Dude is that he is not only a chatterbox, which is cute, but he obviously trained his previous people to do what he wanted them to do by howling. Sometimes he does it when he wants Willow to chase him. We are all slowly weaning him of that by simply ignoring him when he does it, but once he gets going he can really work up a head of steam. Eventually he stops and comes upstairs to see why we haven't responded. We'll get there.

Usually when my cats start making that kind of racket they're waiting for someone to talk to them. If we talk they stop howling. I kind of like when they do it. I think it's funny. I had two cats that actually sounded like they were saying *hello* (loudly).

My cats have all been talkers, but he quietly chirrs and whirrs all day as he walks around the house. That's perfectly fine, and rather sweet. The howling is another story. He sometimes does it early in the morning, so we have to dissuade him.


Connie, it's been a while since I attempted a holiday dinner for friends and family. I miss it. We always used to have people around for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.

We'll be going to a big Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow - like 20 people. Although everyone is vaccinated, we're not very comfortable with it. But our granddaughter will be home on leave from the Army and we are very anxious to see her!

Sounds like fun Draclvr and with everyone vaccinated you're better off, but understand your concern ... stay safe and stay smart.

So hagatha, if you say something to him he still won't stop or are you only ignoring him? If you haven't tried saying "whaatt" or something then try it. It can't hurt. My girl will go in the basement (where my brother lives and is sleeping) in the wee hours of the night/morning and start howling. Sometimes I am still up and if she just hears my voice, she'll stop. She usually drags his wand toy upstairs while howling out the side of her mouth.

My refrigerator seems to be on it's last leg. Lots and lots of food in the freezer probably going to be wasted.

Well, good luck hagatha. Not sure you can stop him doing that. When I talk to my cats when they get in that mode, I'm not really interacting with them, just yelling out one word to let them know they're not alone or whatever. I don't go to them and talk to them or play with them at that time. That one word seems to satisfy them and quiet them down.

I make my dressing in the crock pot now, family. I think it's better that way!

You may be right. I just established that the howling is an invitation to play "chase me" -- with anyone, human or feline.

Laughing here - my Bloodhound just now start howling outside the window where I'm sitting. If you've never heard the mournful sound of a Bloodhound howling, it's really something. However, she is singing the song of her people along with the coyotes across the road down in the woods!

So I guess Dude is singing the song of his people - meaning the human people who came before us, the ones that spoiled him rotten. But you have to laugh. The SPCA told us he was this timid little scaredy-cat who was getting old and lazy, and in reality the little beast is as lively and personable a cat as I've ever seen.

We're in the midst of another very bad storm. We lot our power for a few minutes -- thankfully that's back on. But apparently there's going to be another 10 days of rain here in BC and it's going to make things much worse for those communities that are already devastated by flooding.

Hagatha ... hoping you keep power for the next 10 days and beyond! Recovering from a flood cannot be easy and so much destroyed in the water damage...
