I need some advice concerning can, the purchase of a retro computer. My old Dell on which i played my older games died and I can not play them on my new one. Can anyone suggest an older, say a w98 that could play my BF game like Dire Grove ect.

Sounds like you need Drac's help rebuilding it, or luck in finding someone local who does that sort of thing, or perhaps something on eBay.

I am not sure whether you can load an older Windows operating system on a new computer (as you can with an Apple machine).

It is always very frustrating when you lose the use of older games because they will not run on a new system: sometimes it can be worth searching to see whether anyone has found a way to adapt a particular favourite game to a more modern system. It could be worth contacting Big Fish about any Dire Grove update as I see it was developed by their studio.

Best of luck in any event! catrub

Lexxy, Marian will need to move this thread over to the Glitches forum and in the meantime, I'll see what I can find. I have to work a large event at the horse rescue today, so I won't be home until later this afternoon.

You can have this older computer repaired quite cheaply if it's something like a dead power supply. You can find old computers on Ebay, so you might look there. It's kind of a crapshoot as to what condition they are in.

Lexxy, can you explain a bit more about what happened when your old computer stopped working?

Lexxy, I found a couple of links which may help if you end up being stuck with a newer machine, although I have no experience of trying these

... and this one on the rebuild front https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avLOTWn4qTg

Hopefully some of the more technically minded/experienced on GB can give you more specific help. smile

Lex, since Jenny passed, it's very lonely down here in Glitches, so any and all other help is always appreciated! Marian uses a virtual machine to run old games, so might have some input. I just need to wait to hear back from lexxy to help her decide how to proceed.

What I do know is that one of lexxy's favorite games is Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove, and unfortunately that game does not run on Windows 10 or higher. People have been clamoring for years that Big Fish remaster it. Therefore I understand the importance of her wanting to keep an older machine around for games such as this. She would probably be better off keeping an older machine around for those games and/or buy some of the older games from GOG that are already tweaked to run on newer machines.

But as Drac says, let's wait to hear from lexxy.

My own technical skills are relatively limited, but I have upgraded a couple of old Windows machines and once fixed an overheated xBox 360: I will have a go at most things especially when youtube has so many excellent "how to" videos! lol

I am happy to report that i did secure a Dell Wxp in pretty good shape an did install Dire Grove, I am not connected to the internet in my den so I can not down load any screen savers, I know it is a minor thing but i miss my little fishes and wild life, Does anyone know I could buy a cd with screen savers. A friend said he would burn from his computer but it never materalized, i am still waiting. I would gladly pay for the service

It is well known, but they have also gone to the dark side and offer all kinds of "download now" links that have nothing to do with what you actually want. Just make sure what you click on is what you actually want! I used to use them all the time. It could be that they have cleaned up their act since I last used them. That particular link does not have the fish screensaver you want though.
