Your character can get across some water, but if she starts to drown, hit a rune to take you somewhere, and you won't. It's tough to get through the swamps - I recall getting lost a lot trying to follow those lights!

The swamps are indeed tough. Of course, visit everyone and all the huts and even look behind them to get goodies. Then head off to the swamps on the right. You will have to defeat 3 Shadow Elves and a Shadow Elf General, but none of them are too tough. But do be prepared for lots of fights along the way. You are heading to an island where you will finally get the Fairy Card of Nature which will enable you to get rid of all the prickly bushes (as long as you have a nature fairy in the first slot) and go lots of other places. I'm there now, but I stopped playing to wait up for you.
Gads, nickie, I can't believe I've never thought of hitting a rune if I start drowning! DUH!

There were some bags of goodies I NEVER figured out how to get. They were somewhere on the way to the Shadow Elves dungeons. I must have glug-glugged 10 times and finally gave up! Could never find a sparkly thingie or figure out a way to get over there.

I have a question. Does anyone know the way to the island where I get the the Fairy Card of Nature? I have been there twice but can't remember how to get there.

The short answer is.... NO! It is so completely confusing out there. But I can say that it is off to the right of Dunmore somewhere. Now particularly helpful, I know.

Yes, that's the card, nickie! The only thing you have to guide your the swamp lights, Bets. Go to the owl and follow them as best you can!

If you don't feel like fighting all the mushroom fairies while trying to find your way, buy or cheat lots of garlic sprayers. I always would get turned around backwards because of the fights and get more lost than ever.

I had that trouble the first time I played too, Hawka. Mostly it was when I when to get the coins or whatever I got from winning the fight that I would forget which way I was going. I do the same thing in The Witcher and luckily have a good map to show me that I am now going to wrong way!

That is my problem too. Did you get to the pathway that leads up? Can't get up because of the bush.
I got Boneria up to l. 34 and I think Tredana is now 22 or 23. Gonna go play in a few minutes.

Not sure which pathway you are talking about - maybe in the last screen in the Fairy Garden past the Cottage? You won't be able to go any of those places until you get that dratted Fairy Card of Nature!
Wait until you get to the Mountains - they are just stunningly beautiful. I go there just to look at the scenery! But, guess what? You'll have to get the Fairy Card of Earth in order to blow up a rock first!

Okay, now I am having a problem. For some reason, I can't find the owl so I can follow the lights. I keep going back to the swamp village, but he doesn't appear when I get on the path to the swamp.

I just got out of the same place in the game because I thought you might get too far ahead of me.
When you go down the dock, go right. You should see your first swamp light. Just keep following them sort of bearing right most of the time. You may have to jig around a time or two. Finally you will get to the owl.
After you are done at the island, make sure you explore every inch of the swamp in that area. There are a ton of goodies out there and a pixie or two. There are also some level 20+ fairies out there. I beat a couple and just got whomped by a level 29 Sillia.
I'd forgotten what a tough fight that Shadow Elf was at the island where you get the Fairy Card of Nature! I lost 3 of my 5 fairies before I defeated him. The bear ice fairy is so tough. I can't wait until I get one to train up.

I vaguely recall having to bear left, crossing some water. Sorry I can't be more helpful but it's been too many years since I played this. Oh, right instead of left? There goes the memory! I'll just be quiet now.

Make sure you scour the swamp in that area to get all the goodies and several pixies. Then use your rune cards. Now that you have your Nature Card, go to anywhere you found those annoying prickly bushes. I would go first to the last screen in the Fairy Garden where there was a cave-like place to the left. Get rid of the bush and go talk to the dwarf with the thunderclouds over his head. You can also get a great new fairy - can't remember his name, but he's an electricity fairy. Leveled up, he was one of my best. Then you can go back to the garden where the owl is and head off to the right to get rid of another prickly bush. Or rune to Dunmore and go left to get rid of the prickly bush there and get more goodies and pixies. You can check out this guide to help you decide where to go. Eventually you want to get the Fairy Card of Earth to be able to blast away the big stones blocking your way (with a stone fairy in the first slot). ZanZarah Guide

I went to the prickly bush at Dunmore but couldn't get past the elf, or whoever is standing there and I keep getting defeated at the bridge in the mountains. Any suggestions?

If you keep getting defeated by the elves, you have to go somewhere and train up your fairies some more. If you are talking about the elf in Dunmore on the bridge, you won't be able to get past him until you have the fairy that he wants. If you are talking about the elf on the sort of island, you have to fight him. I was able to sneak in the back way though and break the bush. I forget what was hiding behind it though.
