I got it! The mistake I was making was pushing the thumbstick sideways (since she had to go sideways), instead of back, so the arm she had free was the left, not the right. Also, I couldn't see the blue target. I did think it was kind of strange that she couldn't really see the target she was aiming for! Now I have to learn to sway back and forth, your video will be very helpful for that.

She had to go "sideways" from your point of view. You have to use the controls as though it were from HER point of view...hence you needed to jump backwards...not sideways. You need to always look at things from the character's perspective.
