I have Win XP Service Pack 3. I have played this game before on this computer and it worked fine. I just re-installed it on this computer, it started fine, I played it for a short time, exited the game, and from then on it started with a "Black Screen", and then crashed. I uninstalled it, re-installed it, and I haven't been able to start it since. I've tried all kinds of Compatibility settings but to no avail. Has anyone had this same problem with Realmyst on Win XP?

Did you install it using Compatibility mode on the Setup?
Did you install it into a folder other than the default C:\Program Files?
Do you have the patched version?
If you have the original CD version, there is a patch here

Hi Jenny. I installed the game in C: instead of in Progam Files after I put the Setup.exe in compatibility mode on the CD, and then clicked on it to install the game. (I used the "Win 98/Me" mode. I didn't check any other boxes). After installing the game, I installed the patch(thanks to you), and then started the game.It started up FINE, so I played it, but in a short time I got the "Black Screen", and that was the end of it. When I try to start the game again, I get the black screen, but then the game immediately reverts back to my desktop. Very frustrating. Thank you for the info you gave me, though. There has to be another way.

Someone in ***this thread*** suggested disabling cryptographic services in msconfig to get RealMyst to work.

I DO have a Radeon card, but a few years ago, this game worked perfectly on this same computer. Something has changed, but I don't know WHAT.I'll
continue to experiment, and I'm open to all suggestions, Jenny. I really appreciate your efforts to help me. About the "cryptograhic" suggestion, I already tried that when I had the game installed in Program Files, but the problem still existed.

Jenny, when you said I should use the compatibility mode on the CD's Setup.EXE file (in which I used Win98/ME), should I also put a check mark in any other box?

Disable visual themes and advanced text services if you see the option.

Hi Jenny. YAY! I finally got RealMyst to run correctly. First I updated my graphics card (ATI/RADEON)to Version 10.2. I tried running the game, but it was a no go once more. THEN I made the compatibility of the game shortcut to Windows 2000. Another try, another failure. THEN I disabled VISUAL THEMES and AVDANCED TEXT SERVICES. I ran the game once again, but THIS time------BINGO. Success at last. Maybe someone else who is experiencing the same problem will see this posting, take these same steps and will have the same success that I have had. By the way, the game is installed in C:\RealMyst, and NOT in Program Files.

Hmmmm... wonder if any of these might help get it running in Win 7 XP compatibility mode. Thanks, sanford.

One other thing, Jenny. If you insert the Realmyst disc, and you get the "autoplay" window, do NOT click on "PLAY". You will get that Black Screen, and the game will revert back to your desktop. Instead, click on "QUIT", then click on the aforementioned Reamyst desktop SHORTCUT ICON.
