Just seen an article from 8-1-2008

Question, would this install work with
scummvm

You should ask over at the scumm vm site. They will know best.

I don't see anything at the ScummVM site that says it can be used with Zork Nemesis. There is only something on the compatibility page about 90% compatibility with Return to Zork.

IIRC there are issues with Nemesis in one of the areas on newer PC's period. I haven't replayed the game in quite some time (and I think that was under Virtual PC).

DOSBox reports some compatibility with the game as well. You can create ISO images of the discs and mount them - or try the full install you read about.

edit -

Post a link to the article if you have it, I'd be curious to see it (and maybe give the game another play through).

Maybe he's talking about Robert Gault's full install ***here***.

Here is a quote from a previous post of mine If you can manage to acquire the Exp losiv release of Zork Nemesis. Maybe this could help you if you would rather play the game on an XP machine without the bother.

Quote:
Now you've done it... piqued my curiosity, as the reason I purchased the Xplosiv version was that I was led to believe that Nemesis was a Dos game.

So I did a little test with my Xplosiv Nemesis on XP but first this is an excerpt from the Xplosiv ReadMe file on disk one...

* * *

VII. MICROSOFT WINDOWS® 2000 AND XP USERS

In order for you to launch Zork Nemesis correctly, you will need to launch the program from your installation directory via Windows® Explorer

EXAMPLE:

C:\Program Files\Xplosiv\Zork Nemesis\Runnem.exe

Alternatively, you can..

1. Click-on the Windows START button in the lower Left-Hand corner
2. Choose the RUN option shown, and the BROWSE for the RUNNEM.EXE file.
3. Once you’ve located the RUNNEM.EXE file, you can then click-on the OK button to launch Zork Nemesis

* * *

For the fun of it I loaded my Xplosiv Nemesis on XP straight up without the aid of Compatibility Mode, Installed the game. Found the file RUNNEM.EXE in the Xplosiv Program File (as stated above), which by the way is a Activision installer file, you do not use the ZNEMESIS.EXE (also Activision) file which is the regular executable file that you would normally double click to start the game and the Zork icon. Started the game, watched the opening cinematics and played a few minutes.

Maybe this is why some had trouble with the Xplosiv version as they didn't look far enough in the read me file to see this last paragraph. There will be no start up icon in the start menu, in fact it will say that the Zork Nemesis file is empty, but I believe you can create a shortcut on your Desktop of the RUNNEM.EXE file to make it easier to start.

BTW...ZORK Nemesis, to me, is one of those games that doesn't look as good on a LCD Monitor as it does on a CRT Monitor. Thanks to Jenny100 for enlightening me to that.

Ah, I do recall seeing this some time ago - maybe I'll give it a go later this week.

I tried a full install but a few files on cd3 won't copy with an error message "not a valid dos file"
the game however does play but the mouse and pointer spins to fast, thats why I wanted to try scumm which plays the monkey island games very well

I think Robert Gault's fix is for the Windows version.

To slow the game down, you can try playing it inside Virtual PC or VMware, which will slow it down.
But in addition you could try one of the utilities on the ***PC Slowdown Page*** running on the Windows inside your Virtual Machine.

You should run at least one of the slowdown programs from inside of Virtual PC. And some of the slowdown programs work differently, so you can run more than one at once. For example, SpeedswitchXP can be run along with other slowdown programs. But SpeedswitchXP requires Windows XP so isn't suitable for computers with Vista or Win7.

If you use a VM, you can set the affinity of VirtualPC to a single processor using imagecfg. The download and instrutions for using it are under #2 on ***this page***.

You're right Jenny100. My copy of Zork Nemesis is the 3CD Activision, for MSDOS and Win95. It probably will play on any modern Windows system but there will be a major problem with modern hardware. The game must be slowed down to be enjoyable. Use a slow-down program as mentioned earlier in this thread.

One scene in particular, requires working with a moving object. On modern equipment, that object moves so fast that you can't finish the scene correctly.

There is a patch available for this game at
http://www.patches-scrolls.de/
Search for Zork Nemesis. I believe this patch corrects some video issues.

EDITED
This patch adds captions to the game which is invaluable for the hearing impaired. Even if your hearing is excellent, the captions make solving some puzzles easier.
