I found an installer for WindowsXP/Vista for Amber: Journeys Beyond. I have Windows 7 64 bit and it installed and worked just fine until right at end where you enter the password and it disappears from the screen.
The word "Password" just goes away as soon as you type anything.
Any ideas?

Found my answer at: Password Scroll to bottom and you will find Password.zip. It has a save game
right after you enter password so you can finish the game.

Thanks, birddog! I might have to give this a try on my Win 7 myself. If I get the same results as you did, I will add to the Window 7 and Games thread.

Just went to play it again - the password.sav game and it didn't work a 2nd time. If you get it to work once, immediately save game again. I even downloaded it again and it just won't work.
Still some glitches.

The password should already be entered after you load the save so you shouldn't need to enter it again. If that isn't working, did you try emailing Nick or Jafa at SquirtTheCat about the problem?

You have to be registered and when you try it is not operational. Do you have his email?

When this horde of grandkids and great-nieces and nephews go back to Iowa and Colorado tomorrow, I'm going to give this a shot.

I'll be following this thread closely; Amber is a game that I won't ever forget. I'd love to play it again.

Can I use Virtual PC on Win 7 64-bit? (Not that I know how Virtual PC actually works.)
There was something else that I looked up and it was not available for Win 7 64-bit, just Win 7 Pro.
I can look it up later when I'm at home.

According to this, yes
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

The virtual machine inside of Virtual PC will be separate from your main operating system (your 64-bit Windows 7). So if you install Windows 95 or 98 inside Virtual PC and install Amber on that, Amber will be running on Windows 95 or 98.

I installed Virtual PC and Amber does work fine on it. But what an ordeal. When I finally got Virtual PC to boot the cd and installed Win98 it asked for a previous approved OS since my Win98 was an upgrade- by some miracle I still had Window 95 CD. Then tried to install AMber but it requires sound. Had to get sound drivers on the Virtual Win98 but it wouldn't dig deep enough on installation CD for the drivers so I manually extracted them, put them in a separte folder on my VPC. At least now I can put other old stuff on. Heavens, what I do for this game.

I can see that Virtual PC is not for me--at least not right now. I haven't the time nor the patience to pull out my old Windows disks (if I could actually find them) and then search around for all sorts of drivers.
I have my fond memories of the game; it will have to hold me at least for now.

I don't remember having to install any drivers when I used a Windows 98SE CD. The S3 Trio video and SB16 sound card were old enough and common enough that Windows 98SE includes drivers for them. Windows 95 might require drivers.

If you use VMware instead of VirtualPC, then you need drivers. VMware uses a different sound card (and different video) than VirtualPC.

Well, I didn't have such good luck with Amber. I used the installer from Squirt the Cat and all seemed well. I had to do a couple of continue clicks when it said I need to insert the disk, but the game started just fine. My problem was that any clicks to go anywhere took as long as 60 seconds to complete while it appeared the hard drive was talking to the CD drive.

I still have my old 98SE computer too, but unfortunately I toasted the motherboard by insisting it install a video card that it didn't like. A good old legacy motherboard is hard to find and expensive if you do. A friend has an old computer I might be able to rob some parts from though.

One of the beauties of Virtual PC is that you can make an .iso image of your game CD and tell VirtualPC to use the .iso as a CD. It speeds up the response time quite a bit when the CD information is on the hard drive and you don't have to wait while the disc spins up.

I think I may have to break down and give Virtual PC a try, Jenny. This just might be the push I needed.

EDIT: Jenny, the link you gave a few posts ago was for the download of Virtual PC and XP Mode for Win 7 Professional and up. When I entered my Win 7 Home Premium, of course it said I was not eligible. I found Virtual PC 2007 and, although it listed it as being compatible with Vista, it did not list Win 7.

Sorry about the link. I had the impression it was for both, but I guess I didn't check hard enough. Since I've been using a Mac for Internet, the Microsoft page won't let me test the downloads to see what's available.

You may already know this, but Virtual PC and XP Mode aren't the same thing, since XP Mode includes a copy of XP, they only offer it to people who've paid extra for "Professional" or "Ultimate" versions of Windows. Also XP Mode integrates with your main operating system, and may also have a few problems that regular Virtual PC does not because of the integration.

These sites says Virtual PC will run on Windows 7 and give instructions
http://www.petri.co.il/installing-virtual-pc-on-windows-7.htm
http://howto.techworld.com/virtualisation/3205731/how-to-use-virtual-pc-with-windows-7/

The virtual machines inside of Virtual PC can only be 32-bit operating systems (or possibly 16-bit if you want a DOS VM). I think there has been some confusion about that. It doesn't mean you can't run Virtual PC on a 64-bit Windows 7. It means you can't run 64-bit Windows 7 on a virtual machine inside Virtual PC.

Thanks for the clarification. So even though Virtual PC 2007 doesn't list Win 7 as a supported OS, it will work, correct?

Virtual PC 2007 worked for me on my Win7-64 bit PC. I got a few messages saying it wasnt meant for my OS but I ignored those. Not that I had an easy time of getting Win 98 on it, but it did happen.

That sounds similar to the messages I got installing VirtualPC 2004 on XP Home. There wasn't actually any problem at all.
