I had that problem the first time I burned a GOG tweaked game to disk - but was told by a helpful Gameboomer member not to "do" anything with the downoaded content, just immediately burn everything to disk in the format in which it arrived. So I downloaded it again - to Desktop- and from there immediately burned it to disk "as was" and the game then worked when I installed it from the disk

"I have burned DVD copies of my downloaded games from GOG, but the resulting DVD's are useless because I can't install the game onto my computer from them. There is an .exe file which starts the game, but because the game is running from the DVD, I can't make saves."
hagatha,
What did you burn to DVD? Did you burn the single 'application' file plus any setup files? Or did you install the game then burn all the game files to disk?
If it was the latter, I'm going to guess that's your problem. I had never burned a game to disk before so I asked about it. You burn only the file(s) that you download from GOG...along with the manual, that is, or any other freebies you want to save with the game.
Then when you want to install the game, you use the disk just as if you were downloading it from GOG. You don't play from the disk, you haul that out and play from the files installed on your hard drive.
I really hope that's clear.
Gil.
Shoot, Mad beat me to it. And much more succinctly, too. <g>

Thanks, everyone. As usual, simple operator error. I'll be downloading like mad today and making my disks. Such fun!
GOG now has all of those wonderful Bioware games available, and I intend to download every one. I already have the originals, but I love not having to install patches and switch out disks and all that stuff.
Now, I wonder if the WEIDU mods will work with these versions of the games? Must remember to try next time. And wondering when I'll have time to play all of the NEW games I have. I'm going to have to retire soon just to get through it all.
Still waiting for Thief Gold and Thief 2, though.
Edit -- I spole too soon. I uninstalled and deleted BG1 from the computer and downloaded a fresh copy, and then copied that file to a DVD. No problem with that. But when I try to run the DVD (ie install the game from the dvd) my disk drive spins endlessly and nothing ever happens. Sigh. Nothing ever seems to just work, for me. I must be getting too old for this.

hagatha,
I don't have Baldur's Gate (which I guess is BG1) so I don't know if there's more than one file to download but maybe that's the problem this time. Go back to GOG, click on download and see if it doesn't download in parts. If so, you'll need all of them.
For instance, some of the games I've downloaded have only a single setup file. Still Life, though, has a setup file (gold with the little disc in the middle) and two .bin files that say setup_still_life-1.bin and setup_still_life-2.bin.
Believe me, I sympathize. I've gone round in so many circles trying to get things to work...aaack!
