Hi again

I have another problem <Sigh>

I have tried everything from soup to nuts to get windows to defrag....It stops at 13 %, and says some files can't be defrag..

Now I have did a full defrag a month ago...

I did the scan disk check for errors twice...Still it won't fully defrag..

Help <Again>

Also I want to add...It says please check the file report lists..BUT there is nothing in that window when I click on view.. headscratch

How much free space do you have on the drive?

That message may be normal; not all files are defragged without using a 3rd party product.

Try running DEFRAG from a command prompt (but... DO NOT close the window)...

For XP - (Vista and 7 are similar)

Click Start, Run - enter CMD and press enter. At the command prompt type "defrag c: -a -v" (without the quotes) - press enter. Are there errors in the report?

Hi, Inland

Thank You for the help..

Ok I did what you said...I get no errors in the report...

This is the Volume size/ 229GB
Cluster/4KB
Used Space/30.28 GB
free Space/199 GB

No errors at all...Plus it says you do not need to defrag the volume...

But I have always done it....But I can't now..

It only needs defragging if it is badly fragmented. I only defrag once a year if that.

Using the same method (Command Prompt) enter the command without the -a switch.

Like this -> defrag c: -v

Not matter what you do DO NOT close the command prompt until it completes. You'll see a report when it's done.

Thanks, mj2c

But I like to keep the files in place...Cause I do alot of installing ,and uninstalling of games..I have been defragging all the time...I never had this problem....The computer is running find...But I am afraid I might have to reformat the computer...There has to be an error on the disk...That scan disk can't fix..

Ok Inland let me try that

Ok did it....But I see no errors...What should I look for? In the report?

I did the defrag regular...It now stops at 3 % when it says moving file CPN....Then says some files cannot be defrag

Select the text then do a Control C (This will copy it to the clipboard). Controls V will paste.

Did you try to defrag in Safe Mode?

Hi, mj2c

I have done that and some....Got Dell diagnostics involved...This what the came up with..

I ran a CHKDSK <Read only Mode>

It stated ...Correcting errors in the volume bitmap...

Windows found a problem with the file system..
Run CHKDSK with the F<FIX> option to correct...

I have did everything I can't fix it///

I Think I have to reformat the drive...

Chkdsk in read only mode won't fix errors. It only reports them.

I usually run
Chkdsk /R

and let the computer reboot to run chkdsk.

Chkdsk /R /V

will do the same thing as Chkdsk /R but will give more detailed output about what it finds.

There are some files that may be too large to move.

Here are what the switches mean:

/F Fixes errors on the disk. Does not scan for bad sectors.

/V On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every file on the disk. On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any.

/R Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /F).

You can find more listed here
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/chkdsk.htm

If your hard drive is developing bad sectors, you may want to replace it rather than reformatting and reinstalling and having it continue to develop bad sectors.

Hi Darleen I used to have trouble defraging with my virus guard (I've since changed it) but the only way I could defrag was to turn off the virus guard otherwise it just went round and round in circles. wave

This just keeps getting more and more interesting - Try to run CHKDSK as Jenny stated, use the /F switch.

Background activity has also been known to halt defrag - generally running in safe mode prevents that from happening.

Before you reformat - you might want to run the System File checker (SFC).

System File Checker

Thanks , Inland...

I did the SFC..Still the same thing...I spent the day scanning the disk in every letter..

R/F...Nothing works...Defrag stops at 3 % ,and sometimes 13 %....

I am just goint to back up my files. and completely recover from the system disk..

I don't know what the heck happened...I am at a loss cause this has <Never> happened to me with out windows being able to fix the bad files...

I also did a clean boot ,and tried to defrag...Same thing happened..

But, have you tried to defrag in Safe Mode yet? If that doesn't work, you definitely may have something going on.

If that fails then I will reformate the computer....

Thank You all for your help..

I suspect that Black Mirror is the problem. Do a Google search for Auslogic disk defrag. It is free. If that does not work, You might save your saved games and uninstall Mirror and try again. Going back to April is pretty drastic.

Hi, Gobobby

I had that program also ...It could not fully defrag files <sigh> It would stop....

I have to restore to April or May...Cause that was the last time I got a full defrag...
I'll wait till I finish Black Mirror the uninstall it...And try to defrag...

Dar, you might want to consider what Jenny said about your hard disk potentially going bad.

Hi ,All

Well it took me many hours, but I did a reformat, and now my windows defrag is in working order...I had to back up all my files...Write down passwords..Etc Etc...I am still not done...Tomorrow is another day..

I don't know what caused this problem, but I believe it was a software conflict, and not a hardware problem....If all else failed today...then I would of have to consider a new drive.

Thank You all again
I hope this helps some people before you take the drastic decision to replacing your drive..try to reformat first.
