Personally, I didn't think it was much of a curve at all. I would highly recommend that you watch the Getting Started video available in Help and Support on the Start menu. There are many great new features that you might miss. While it's definitely different, I didn't think it was radically different.

You have to go a little further. Do you seen any speakers listed in the Manage Audio screen? There should be a Speakers listing with a green check by it indicating that your speakers are properly plugged into the sound card. If there is, click on Properties. Make sure Use This Device (Enable) is checked. From this screen you can set your sound levels etc.

What a great report to know that ecollegePC is living up to the hype about their customer service! I would guess your speakers weren't compatible with the on-board sound on your motherboard and Windows 7 didn't have drivers for them either.
I just set up a computer they built for a friend. I think my favorite thing was - NO BLOATWARE! It was pure bliss.
Sounds like you're having fun!
