I'd reckon that this Braodcom 802.11 Multiband Network Adapter is my wireless network adapter, correct?

Yes, all things 802.11 will apply to Wireless LAN technology.

If you're ever unsure about a specific device, try looking up the specs on the OEM's web site (they all provide data sheets).

Here's your ATA device -

Travelstar™ 7K200

Highlights -

  • At 200GB 1, the highest capacity
  • 7200 RPM 2.5-inch drive
  • Third-generation PMR technology
  • Best application performance in
  • PCMark testing
  • ndustry-leading operating shock of 350G
  • Lowest 7200 RPM power consumption, comparable to 5400 RPM
  • Low acoustics, comparable to 5400 RPM
  • Serial ATA 3 Gb/s & 1.5 Gb/s <-<< Note: SATA
  • New security option: Bulk Data Encryption

Edit -

In as much as you're still testing the waters here, I'd recommend keeping the Recovery Partition on that hard drive. Otherwise, you'll have no fall back options.

Just to make it clear, Bluetooth is a different kind of wireless than Wi-Fi. Bluetooth is used for such things as wireless headsets or synching with a GPS. Bluetooth isn't usually used for Internet because bandwidth is very low. Unless you have a Bluetooth device such as a wireless headset, installing the Bluetooth drivers won't do much for you unless you just want the practice. I wouldn't bother slipstreaming Bluetooth drivers because they can easily be added later.

Since I'm putting XP on that computer (the M1530) why would I want to keep the Vista restore partition?

What do you mean, I'm still testing the waters here? Are you talking about the possibly of me having to send the M1530 back to the seller (I hope not)?

Also, since I'm putting XP on the M1530, why would I have to worry about fall back options? I don't want to have Vista on it - I bought the M1530 with the intention of putting (downgrading) to XP.

See if you can copy or print out all the System Information Vista has for the computer. Maybe dxdiag information too. That way you'll have the information on what hardware is in your laptop. If you can't copy or print out directly, take screenshots and save them to a USB stick so you'll have a record. All the things that are listed may not make much sense to you now, but they do give some clue to what drivers are currently on the computer.

If you install XP and don't have drivers for some part of the computer (like the Express card reader or something), it will show up in dxdiag as a yellow exclamation point. You won't have any idea what is missing unless you have a list of the drivers currently installed.

I don't agree with saving the restore partition because of the wacky way Dell set up the partitioning on this model. Remember

1st partition -- Dell Diagnostics (tiny MB size partition)
2nd partition -- Windows Vista
3rd partition -- Restore partition (6 to 10 GB)
4th partition -- Media Direct partition (10 GB)

Remember what happens when you install Windows without using the Media Direct DVD at the proper times -- you transform the Media Direct button into a self-destruct button. And I'm pretty sure you also lose the ability to access the Restore partition.

You can check your partitioning by using the Start Search and typing in
diskmgmt.msc

The disk manager should open and you can examine the partitioning of your drive. You can check whether the previous owner changed the default partitioning or not. If the partitioning is set to factory defaults, you should see four partitions. Not all of them will be named.

What will happen if I just delete all of the partitions when I install XP (after first getting the screenshots of what is in System Information)?

No I don't mean returning the laptop, I'm talking about a fall back to a working rig.

Testing the waters refers to your uncertainty as to what needs to be done and how. In other words, tinkering is fine, but should anything go wrong I don't want to see you left with nothing.

Once XP is running to your satisfaction, then by all means delete the partition.

Without the Restore and Media Direct partitions, the last partition will be the same as the Windows partition and you won't have the "self-destruct button" problem. Check post ##715008 earlier in this thread where I described the bizarre booting system on this series of Dell laptops and the problem with the Media Direct button.

One thing you could do is buy a new SATA II hard drive from Newegg and put that in the laptop. You'll have a larger hard drive and you'll still have the old Vista hard drive to refer to, should you need it. There are instructions on changing the hard drive in the M1530 ***here***. It isn't difficult. All you need is the screwdriver. Here's a drive with good feedback --> ***Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB***.

But, gee, Inland, don't I have to delete the partitions BEFORE I format/install XP? I mean, if I don't do it when the XP CD is in the drive (during the clean install) then there's the chance I may accidentally convert the Media Direct partition into a Self Destruct button because the XP install will not overwrite these partitions - these partitions will still be underneath the XP partition?

Ok, here are the screenshots of my Components as listed in my Dell XPS System Information - (but under Software, the Drivers/Signed Drivers had a very long, long list of items, so I didn't bother to take screenshots of these)

Dell XPS cr rom

Dell XPS disks

Dell XPS ide 1

Dell XPS ide 2

Dell XPS ide 3

Dell XPS keyboard

Dell XPS mouse

Dell XPS wireless network adapter

Dell XPS sound device

Dell XPS SCSI

Dell XPS storage

video card

Now, for the DxDiag stuff -

DxDiag - general info

Dxdiag - input

Dxdiag - sound 1

DxDiag - sound 2

DxDiag - display

Note: Under network adapters in System Information there was a very long, exhaustive list of adapters, so I didn't bother to do screenshot captures of these, nor did I link you to them, except the wireless adapter, which is the most important adapter I'm concerned with getting connected to the internet once I'm up and running with XP on the M1530.

Ok - would you say I'm now ready to start installing XP (after first using nLite to slupstream the drivers, which I haven't done yet)?

For the DXDIAG, you should be able to use that "Save All Information" button and save the output as a text file.

You might also check your Device Manager to see what it lists under Network Adapters.

***Here's*** the network card configuration for the M1330 that is shown in Device Manager. This M1330 happens to have the Intel Wireless. Note that it's listed separately from Broadcom. Broadcom is the FastEthernet (wired) not the wireless.

The idea is to have a record of every piece of hardware on your system that might require drivers -- and make a copy before you wipe out Vista. You probably won't use it all, but just in case, you have a record of what's inside your laptop.

If you got a new hard drive for your laptop you wouldn't have to worry so much about this. You could always put the Vista drive back in if you needed to check on something.

Have you used diskmgmt.msc to find out how your hard drive is partitioned yet? I'm wondering if your computer has the original partitioning from Dell on it, or whether the person you got it from might have changed the partitioning when he reinstalled Vista.

I'm wondering this because I would have thought that the M1530 would have the same audio configuration as the M1330, and the default configuration for the M1330 looks like this:
***Audio on the M1330***

***Your entry under Sound Device*** only shows the entry for the Sigmatel codec, not the hdaudio.sys driver.

If the person you got your M1530 from has already repartitioned, you don't even have a Restore Partition or a Media Direct partition to worry about.

Another thing to note -- you see how the lines for Driver and PNP Device ID are cut off at the end of ***your screenshot of Sound Device***? You can resize the area and make it wider so it doesn't cut off the end of the line. See that little vertical line to the far right of where it says Value at the top of the chart? If you hover your mouse over it, you should get a double-headed arrow. Click when you see the arrow and you can drag it to the right so it will show the rest of the line.

This list is long and exhaustive, I don't know how to use this information to find what drivers I'll need for these devices under XP?

M1530's HDD partition (only 1 partition)

Judging from this screenie taken after I did a "diskmgmt.msc" I believe the previous owner wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Vista, and as a result there's only 1 partition - the C: partition - correct?

You don't have to post the entire dxdiag. Just keep it in case there's some info you have to refer to later on. I do notice there are no drivers for WiFi listed.

I'd be more interested in seeing a screenshot of your diskmgmt.msc program to see if you have the default partitioning that came with this model. If it doesn't, that means the person you bought it from probably reinstalled Vista -- and they may not have installed the Wifi drivers.

The dxdiag from the M1330 (that has the Intel WiFi) does have a line for WiFi. Although WiFi is disabled on the laptop, the drivers are still there, and you can see them in dxdiag under where it says System Devices ***here***. So why do I see no Wifi drivers in your dxdiag? I wonder if the seller reinstalled Windows and forgot to install the Wifi drivers.

Anyway, you can get the XP drivers for the Dell wireless 1490 ***here on the Dell website***.

If you want to try installing the Vista drivers for the Dell Wireless 1490 before you reformat (to check if the wireless is working), those are ***here***.

Yes he definitely reformatted/repartitioned that sucker. Didn't even keep the Dell Diagnostics partition. At least you don't have to worry about accidentally pressing the self-destruct button.

Jenny/Inland, I pruned my M1530 XP drivers folder down to 7 files, as follows -

--conexant_D400...R197197.exe - exten'l USB modem driver;

--dell multidevice A17 R174291.exe - Dell wireless wifi WLAN driver;

--infinst_autol.exe - chipset driver;

--kb888111xpsp2.exe - Sigmatel HD audio driver;

--R151519.exe - wireless WLAN MiniPCI driver;

--R166200.exe - Intel Matrix storage mangr (SATA Intel AHCI driver;

--video.rar - Nvidia GeForce 8400/8600 driver;

I believe these drivers is all I'll need to get started in having a working XP M1530 laptop; the mouse/keyboard drivers come with XP, correct?

Meanwhile I'm going to test the M1530's wireless card tonight.

Will keep you posted.

Installed the Wifi vista driver you found for me, Jenny. Tested the computer (M1530) by trying to connect to internet via our wireless router - but the connection failed b/c there was no response from our router, yet the router is on at all times - what gives?

It's a Netgear WGR614 v7 router.

No, which is why I stated you're still testing the waters. After you've run through it a few times you'll understand what I mean. You only need to delete the Vista partition.

According to her ***diskmgmt.msc results***, she only has the one partition.
So whether or not to save the restore partition is now a moot point.
The previous owner apparently decided not to keep it.

Did you see this - (below)?

From my post at PC Guide (which apparently few people bothered to check) I wrote - (this concerns Windows 7):

just restored my Acer Aspire 5745G laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) back to factory settings, and I tried to get it connected to the internet using our wireless router (Netgear WGR614 v7) all afternoon/evening in vain. The laptop does not detect the router, even though our router is always powered on. But before I decided to reset the laptop back to factory defaults, it was able to detect our Netgear router, yet it was unable to connect - that's why I decided to reset the laptop back to factory settings.

In the Network and Sharing Center box (on the M1530) that appears on the lower right corner of my laptop's desktop, I see that the computer has detected several other wireless networks (owned by complete strangers) except our Netgear network.

The M1530's wireless card is listed in Device Manager as a Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card.

How do I get my laptop to detect our netgear network/router?

My laptop's (both the Acer - I'm sure; and the M1530 - I think, not sure) wireless (802.11) WIFI is turned on.

Thanks in advance.

One good way to look at the fact that I have only 1 partition - that's more space for XP (and games)!

And also - did you see in Post # 717720 where I said that I've pruned my M1530 XP drives folder (stored on my mac's hard drive currently prior to burning to a CD using nLite) down to 7 files?

pruned XP drivers folder for M1530

As you can see, I unpacked the "video.rar" to a "video" folder - should I move its contents into the main drivers' folder, or keep them in this separate "video" folder considering that I'm going to slipstream these drivers onto a CD using nLite?

Am I ready to start slipstreaming at this point? Which computer do I use nLite to slipstream on - the Acer (win 7) or the M1530 (vista) or the mac (OS X)?

EDIT - the "exe" suffix on the nLite tells me that it is a Windows program, thus, I'd either run it in XP/Vista/Windows 7.

It isn't difficult. All you need is the screwdriver. Here's a drive with good feedback --> ***Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB***.

Mom doesn't want me to have to buy anything extra for the M1530 at this time. She let me buy the laptop under the condition that I didn't have to buy any other extra attachments/devices for it, and I agreed.

But then again, Jenny, seeing that the price on that hard drive is only 54 dollars (plus S & H), I'd like to get it but how to convince Mom to let me get it? Mom's nearly computer-illiterate, she'd rather not want me to talk to her about computers, and she'd rather not learn about computers, not at her age (82 years old).

EDIT - I wrote Mom a note regarding this HDD you advised I get, Jenny, and Mom said, "OK, but do you know what you're doing?" I said, "yes, I'm just upgrading the hard drive in the Dell XPS." Mom said, "it's your money, go ahead and buy it."

So Jenny/Inland, 2 questions before I order that HDD Jenny linked me to at newegg - are there XP (32-bit) drivers for the SATA II HDD? Will the Matrix Storage Manager (SATA Intel AHCI) driver work with this new hard drive? Will it accept XP (32-bit) as well as my older PC games?

EDIT - I just ordered that 320 GB HDD from newegg that you found for me, Jenny - thanks!

I believe your current hard drive is an SATA II disk. At least that's what it appears to be by the specs.

Very Moot smile Looks like she doesn't have to worry about that one.

The Intel Matrix Storage driver should work with any SATA II drive. I'm glad you're getting the new drive so you can keep the Vista drive as is and don't have to worry about saving all the configuration information from it. Installing the new drive should be a snap, and you can keep the old one in the antistatic bag the new one will come in.

I don't know why your network card isn't working with your router. I tried a Google search for
"Netgear WGR614" Dell 1490

and came up with ***this thread*** where someone else was having trouble getting that Dell network card to work with that model Netgear router. I also found ***this website***, where they tried to troubleshoot. You can find more discussions with a Google search. I can't really do much to help troubleshoot your wireless system because I don't know how it's set up and I don't know for sure if there's a hardware incompatibility or not. But I would think the Dell wireless card in your laptop would at least be able to SEE the router. Even if SSID broadcast is turned off, the router should respond to a probe from the laptop, but this doesn't always work. So you might go into your wireless router's configuration and make sure SSID broadcast is NOT turned off. According to info in ***this thread*** and elsewhere, turning off SSID broadcast can cause connection problems, and turning it off isn't really a security feature.

This is why I like wired connections -- you just plug in the ethernet cable and it works.

Cruise why don't you try Network Magic there is a one week free trial, you can put it on whatever computer is directly connected to the router, or wireless if that is the case. At least you would be able to "see" what is going on. I had a heck of a time with my old Belkin, but finally managed with this program to get it set up, however it was never secure. I now have a Linksys that was super easy to set up. With my desktop the network connection drivers are on my motherboard CD, when I had to reinstall XP I had to put them on or no internet.

I like the direct connect like Jenny said too, but it won't work anymore since things are scattered all over the house. I used to use a "bridge" with ethernet cable between my two desktops. You could also take the laptop to one of your internet cafe places to see if it can find the connection.

What kind of magic spell to use?

I d/l a WPA/WEP crack utility along with Ubuntu to use on my netbook to try to crack our router's WEP/WPA key so I could try to get on the internet on my Acer and the M1530 laptops.

I'm going to play with Ubuntu and this crack utility on my netbook while waiting for this notebook hard drive from newegg comes.

Exactly why do you need to crack your own router? Why not not just enter the setup routine?

Maybe I missed something...

Edit -

If you're just looking for a response to the DHCP request (and you have a PC directly connected to it) - download and run AIRSNARE on it. It runs ethereal, which will show you everything you need to see.

You're sure that each device is specifying the same protocol - right.

While you're at it, check the routers firmware. It may be out of date.

B/c I do not know our WEP/WPA key. My nephew might know it, but I'd rather not bother with asking (and waiting long periods of time for him to show up) my too-too-too busy nephew for the key - I'd like to find it myself, as I've nothing else to do, also it'll keep me busy so I won't feel inclined to pester Mom (she wants her peace & quiet b/c she wants to relax).

It's been awhile since I setup a Netgear router - but, try entering the setup routine. Enter 192.168.1.1 in Internet Explorer's address bar (from a PC that can access the router)...

So I don't have to hunting for it - what is the specific model number of the router?

It's a Netgear WGR614 v7 wireless router.

I tried the network magic that Hawka linked me to - it said to unplug the router's power cord, wait 10 seconds, and replug the router. This I did and Network Magic said there is a problem with the wireless adapter or access point. How do I fix this (this is with using the Win 7 Acer - I want to use the Acer to find the WEP key usiing Windows 7 - have instructions on how to do this)?

Perhaps a wireless adapter driver is missing that's causing the problem (the adapter is turned on)?

did this -

typed these words

1 - admin, <blank> = nothing;
2 - admin, admin = nothing;
3 - admin, root = 401, unauthorized entry, access denied;
4 - root, <blank> = 401 unauthorized entry, access denied;
5 - root, root = 401 unauthorized entry, access denied;
6 - root, admin = nothing.

Inland, the Network Magic shed light on the problem but the AirSnare didn't work for me at all - seems as if some DLL's are missing.

Looks like you can download the manual from here
http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2589

Are any computers in your home currently able to use the wireless router? If so, have you tried logging onto the router using any of the following
http://www.routerlogin.net
http://www.routerlogin.com
http://192.168.1.1

as described on p. 1-9 of the Setup Manual?

It's possible that the admin and password are still set at the default, in shich case you'd use
admin
for the user name and
password
for the password.

The troubleshooting tips in the Netgear manual say to wait somewhat longer.
