Re: resident evil 5 - 07/06/10 08:04 AM

I've played it, 2 times and enjoyed each time. The last battle was most difficult for me and I couldn't get it the 1st time but perservered and finished it the 2nd. Alot of intregue with a good story and you go to many places and do different things. I mean it isn't just all shooting. As for the horror label, I don't scare easily so am not a judge for that.
I do recommemd it.

I also played it on a PS3, I enjoyed the game very much. It is not too easy since it has "big boss" kind of fights but not too difficult either. Not very scary at all, but this is a very subjective appreciation.

For the PC version, I've found the friendly A.I. to be pretty bad.

Everyone I know who's played it has said pretty much the same to me.

The game is better played if you have another human player to play with you.

It's not like Resident Evil games of the past, where you played solo.

The same for PS3, she is not so good companion particularly when "defending", not as bad when giving her the order of attack. If you are a man at least you have something to refresh your eyes blush .

But the game is well worth playing, just more difficult without a "real" partner. I played it solo.

Another PS3 solo player, here. Not a bad game at all, though a few spots felt more like work than fun. Have you played RE4, kjos? RE5 is very, very similar to that, gameplay wise, co-op and real-time inventory quirks notwithstanding.

Feeb88,

First RE I played.

I like it because the story from RE4 is concluded in RE5. I wouldn't call RE5 Resident Evil however as there is almost nothing scary and it's almost all about the action. RE4 was similar but that game focused more on the scare aspect.

Re: resident evil 5 - 07/16/10 03:27 PM

I wouldn't even consider RE4 to really be Resident Evil, to be honest, since that's when the shift from slower, more methodical survival horror to kill-'em-all action first happened (though even by Nemesis the series was getting there). Having played pretty much every RE game released for a PlayStation, including spin-offs like Outbreak and Survivor (*wince!*), RE2 is still my favorite of the bunch. grin RE4 is widely thought to be one of the best action-horror games ever released, though, and I'd have to agree with that sentiment.

PS3 players can check out the first three RE games, as well as Dino Crisis and Silent Hill 1, as $6 downloads ($10 for RE1) on PSN. But obviously the visuals, and especially the controls, are going to seem pretty dated by today's standards! It's great, though, if you still wanna pick one of them up from time to time while retiring your original discs (*cough*RE2*cough*). wink

OK, RE gurus? what's a good one to start with? I have RE 1, but it's too dated to even attempt.
I want something that's not too difficult, maybe like the Silent Hill games. Are there any Resident Evil games similar? I'm only interested in solo games.

Re: resident evil 5 - 07/17/10 12:02 PM

There's a fine line between "guru" and "obsessive fan". grin

And, well, that's sort of the irony of the main series. The first three use pre-rendered backgrounds and "remote-control car" controls a la RE1 (though 2 and 3 are prettier and more refined), while parts four and five turned the whole thing into a more intense shooter. So basically, your options are either dated, or difficult - and in RE3: Nemesis, you have a hulking monstrosity on your tail who just, will, not, die, so that's probably a little of both. wink RE4 isn't too bad, difficulty wise, but it's a lot action-heavier than Silent Hill, and the PC version is simply inferior to the consoles'.

Let's see what the rest of the guru-gang thinks. smile

Re: resident evil 5 - 07/26/10 11:12 AM

Inn a big RE fan but only for consoles, have never played them on a pc.

But I have played all of them more than once and RE4 Ive played at least 4 times, Its my absolute favorite replacing nemisisRE3 ( I loved that you could make your own ammo in nemesis smile )There are 2 RE4's though, one is for Dreamcast and completely different than the one for gamecube/PS3. But I really enjoyed that too.
And as much as I loved the first 3 when I try to go back to play them now after the action packed 4, they just seem to slow. frown

As for 5....well took me a bit to get into it and it was a fair play but not as good in my opinion. and having a partner like that was a pain, but what seemed to work best for me was to give her the machine gun and let her at it because we seemed to pick up a to of ammo for it.
Still, The game is well worth a play if your an RE fan. smile

Re: resident evil 5 - 07/26/10 11:36 AM

Thanks, guys/gurus smile Guess RE probably isn't for me. I've been stumbing around in Tomb Raider Anniversary for weeks but I haven't had another new game in months. So I'll just keep playing my old favorites - Vampire Redemption, Bloodlines, Undying, M&M6 & 7, Gothic 1&2. TR has made me want to play Indy & the Infernal Machine again, at least until something comes out that looks good. Heard there's going to be a Gothic 4. YAY!

Re: resident evil 5 - 07/26/10 06:34 PM

Code: Veronica (or Code: Veronica X, as the "enhanced" PS2 version was called) is a definite fave of mine, if for no other reason than it had Claire Redfield. laugh (And that whole Alfred...business aside.) Calling it "the other RE4" would get confusing in a hurry, though. crazy

Nemesis was a real challenge, and gunpowder-mixing a cool quirk - did you ever complete Mercenaries mode with Nicholai (the guy with only the knife), Gamer? That was a doozy. grin

Barb, you've probably spotted that other thread, but there's always Saw if you're looking for something (vaguely) SH-ish. Though honestly, it's a pretty mediocre to average effort, and only likely to appeal to rampant survival-horror/horror-film fans.

Re: resident evil 5 - 07/28/10 01:27 AM

Thats it! Code Veronica! happydance
I couldnt think of it for anything and Im sure I still have it even though the Dreamcast bit the dust. smile

No Ive never done the mercenary mode, Im just not good enough. But my sons have and my oldest unlocked everything for RE4. Though Ive tried I just cant play in professional/hard mode mode, my hands just cant handle it and ache to much. frown But I manage fairly well in normal mode. smile

I have to say the RE series are about the only games I can play more than once.

Re: resident evil 5 - 08/09/10 08:30 PM

It's funny that someone mentioned Tomb Raider here, because there is actually a part in RE5, where you have to turn a lever to fall to the level beneath you (I think it's like a cave), and repeat this process 3 times or more. The funny part is that the levers and the area instantly reminds you of Tomb Raider and when I went in there I said "darn, they've turn it into Tomb Raider. Where is the world going?" lol
