What really, really old game do you wish were remade to work on an up-to-date computer?

The other day I was looking through my stack of ancient games that I can no longer play because of the advancements of software and technology. With regret I looked fondly over these old titles:

Lemmings - this is essentially a puzzle game but it gave me many hours of pleasure. It is one of those games that you can play if you just have a few moments and can't commit a lot of time.

Zork - this is an adventure game. I enjoyed it so much back then because there wasn't much to choose from then. I wish I could replay it to recapture this memory of fun although I don't really remember the story.

Killing Time - this is either an RPG or action game which I played on an ancient console (Atari I think it was). I would love to play this again on an updated machine.

What are your fond memories of your roots in the gaming world?

You can get the Zork games from GOG now and they will run on new systems.

(This is off topic, but I thought you would like to know. GOG also has Return to Zork).

One of the tweaked to run on modern machines "Darkside" games I bought from GOG was Return to Krondor.

Ok now this is really old and they ran on my ancient computer with 5 1/4" floppies, but I loved the Kroz games by Apogee (sp) software. I know there is something online now, but nowhere near the same. Kingdom of Kroz was my favorite and I made it to the end.

Even though I can play all the early Tomb Raider games on my old computer I would love to see TR 2 and 3 remade with sharper graphics.

Yet another great topic! This is why I love this website so much....I often log on to find that someone else is thinking along the same lines that I am, and knowing I'm not alone feels awesome!

Let's see....my oldies that I can't seem to run anymore (and I'm either too intimidated by or too stubborn to use DOSbox) are:

Realms of the Haunting: I loved the parts I played of this game but for some reason I never finished it, then many years later I wanted to but couldn't get it to run on my much-newer computer. I just love 90's games in general.....that's when I first discovered computer games and so I guess those older graphics just do it for me even now.

Amber Journeys Beyond: I did play this one through when it first came out and I really was intrigued by it. I found it again in my closet last month but it's another one I can't seem to get to play on my new computer, darn it.

Lands of Lore: I heard alot about this game and found some great-looking screenshots online a few years ago, so I got it (probably here on GB) and unfortunately can't run it to save my life. LOL

Maybe these will show up on GOG one day---I love how they have older games with DOSbox already in there for you--it makes it so much easier to play!

I'm with you, Mad - the Quest for Glory games are so good, & IV is my favorite! I'd love to be able to play them again!

I'm playing the Zork games on and off right now. They're only a few dollars. Back in the day, we paid $80.00 for them, on 5.5" floppy disk.

I'm waiting for Thief GOld to be playable on a modern computer.

What a great topic! The answer's easy for me...Wizardry 8, the most fun game I've ever played and replayed (with the good savegame editor). Couldn't get it to install on my new PC, even though it's WinXP like the previous one, and I constantly miss playing it. Jenny, I saw Dungeon Keeper 2 on Amazon the other day and the price wasn't bad. Ray, the first System Shock was a good one to name--never played it, but have read about it and seen screenshots. I played System Shock 2 with cheats and liked that quite a bit. Think I ordered it from GamesWarehouse in Australia--they might still have some copies. Tracy, you might be able to install and run Lands of Lore 3, which is one of my favorite games. There's a new copy available from an Amazon Marketplace seller for 35 bucks, if you're interested. And, if you try it and need any help, I'd love to be asked any questions about it--I know it like the back of my hand and I still have the Prima strategy guide for it, with maps and such. LoL3 is another one I'd like to see remade for newer systems, with better graphics and a bigger gameworld.

What was the exact nature of the problem with getting Wizardry 8 to run? It runs just fine on my dual-core Windows XP computer. I'm sure you also installed the patch?

Wizardry 8 was a great game but I thought the final battles were very cheap. I was only able to finish them with cheats, and I'm good at RPGs.

Marian, I couldn't get the game to install, no matter what I tried. I think it may have had to do with the new PC's quad-core processor, but I'm not sure. Yes, Ray, the endgame fights are tough, but I always maxed out my characters with the savegame editor at the beginning of the game, so there was very little that could stand against us.

Thought of a couple other oldies that would lend themselves to a modern remake...Wizards & Warriors and Darkstone, the latter of which I never finished--can't remember why, but I was liking it. I could probably think of a few more if I wasn't taking some cold pills that have clouded my mind.

Sig, it could be the quad core processor that's the problem. Maybe assigning the game to run on a single core would make a difference.

I tried doing that, Marian, but to no avail. I meant that maybe that was STILL the problem. Thanks for trying to help, anyway. I submitted Wiz8 as a suggestion to GOG.com a while back, so maybe some day they will acquire the rights to it and process it as a download that's compatible with newer systems. I bet you'd agree that, for an old-school CRPG, there are enough nifty things about it that it could appeal to a new generation of PC gamers.

That would be great if GOG could re-release it. It's a fabulous RPG and a real challenge. I hope that at some point it will be playable again for you.

The very first game I played on a computer was the original Wizardry, back in 1982.

Sig, Darkstone was a lot of fun. I played it obsessively for six months and got one of my characters up to about level 56, which I seem to remember was very hard to do. That would be a great game to be re-released.

I really liked Darkstone too - but it eventually got way too difficult for me and I had to give up on it

How about a remake of the Indy Jones games. I never got to play them.

Hi Gerry, the Indy games were great, but the first 2 - Fate of Atlantis and Last Crusade, are very old & dated. They are pretty much adventure only. The Infernal Machine is one of my all-time favorites & I was able to play it on XP. The last game - the Emperor's Tomb, is in more of the Lara Croft-style & you would probably like it. It should run on most of the newer systems.

The Indy games get lots of mentions as great games. I'd love to play them too, just to see what all the fuss was about. Well, that and I'm a huge Indiana Jones fan.

Tracy, if you have windows XP, Lands of Lore will play on that. You have to set the exe file to compatibility mode or something, but mine works great on my windows XP. Lands of Lore, throne of Chaos is one of my most favorite games.

Barb I didn't know that! Maybe they will remake them like they did Tomb Raider game. I'd love to play them all.

Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos was one of the very first non-adventure games I played. Loved it.

Yeah, any of the Lands of Lore games would be good to remake (never played the first two). Course, if they just wanted to make a new game (first-person perspective, please) called Lands of Lore IV that continues the storyline, I'd be all for that, too.

Hi Sig. I forgot to check this thread so it's been awhile, but thanks for letting me know that Lands of Lore 3 will work on newer systems! And I might just come to you for advice if/when I get it going and get stuck! Thanks for that.

Yeah Tracy, well I think the last PC I played Lands of Lore 3 on was Windows ME, but it might install and run on Win XP. Probably worth a shot, but definitely patch it up to the last version, which I think is 1.07A, and do frequent and strategic quicksaving.
