Hey Barb,
Dragon Age is an interesting game with a good story and great voice acting. There are nearly 70,000 lines of dialogue, so there's no shortage of description and in game character back stories. Character development and race selection isn't quite as complex as earlier D&D games. Skills and spells are also somewhat limited. It can be fairly challenging at times, but if you take your time and plan out your approach and attacks as you would in earlier D&D games you should do OK. In some cases the game forces a certain position of attack, usually the boss fights, but you get used to it. The expansions/DLC are pretty decent as well.
KOTOR is awesome. Personally, I think the story line is better than any of the movies. If you want to have a lot of those fun "aha!" moments, stay away from walkthroughs and spoilers when playing; it's worth it.
Baldur's gate is old school, turn based, D&D and worth the time to play it. It was developed by Black Isle, which was the predecessor of Bioware, well before they got eaten by the bigger corporate producers. Another excellent game to try out if you haven't already is Planescape: Torment. It's an interesting theme. Don't expect amazing graphics from any of those early games though. The focus is on the game play strategy and story.
Not sure if you've ever had a game that required a Steam account, but in the last few years I've been playing a lot of my games through their cloud. It's nice, because they have a decent selection of the early games, some of which would require an emulator to play on the newer PC platforms (i.e. Myst), but that's taken care of on their cloud. The prices of the older games are also very reasonable. I picked up a large selection of the old Star Wars games for under $10.00 during one of their specials a while back as an example.
Have fun! TM
