Phantasmagoria- Windows XP - 04/24/20 01:42 PM

I have just bought the game Phantasmagoria on disc, which there are 7 of, and am trying to install on my Windows XP laptop. I followed a suggestion of not doing the system check ups and it seems to install ok. But when I went on the game it only filled part of the screen and the mouse wouldn’t work. Anyone know how I can get this game properly up and running?

Do we still have the ancient link to the page that tells how to get games running on XP? I'm drawing a total blank on the member who had it.

Inferno! That's who it was. Yes, you might try checking in the Glitches Grand Old Thread Thread

There are several links there that might help.

You can probably get the game working, but it would also be a lot easier were you to play the download from GOG which supports Windows 7/8/10.

You can find the download here. This would eliminate the potential problems and the tweaking involved with running it on Windows XP. I played the GOG version on my Windows 7 computer and it ran perfectly.

The easiest way would be to get a disc version working properly is to do what the GOG version does and use ScummVM to run it.

Phantasmagoria 1 and 2 are listed on the ScummVM compatibility page
https://www.scummvm.org/compatibility/2.1.1/
There are download links for ScummVM here:
https://www.scummvm.org/downloads/

To use ScummVM you have to copy files and folders from the discs to a folder on the hard drive, then open ScummVM, choose to Add a game, and point ScummVM to the folder where you copied the game files. There are more instructions here (under Sierra SCI32 games and what to do for games with multiple discs)
https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Datafiles#All_SCI32_.28SCI2.2F3.29_games

Another website to go to for help with any Sierra adventure game is sierrahelp.com
They have a webpage specifically for mouse issues here:
http://sierrahelp.com/XPHelp/MouseProblems.html

They also have installers for Sierra games, including Phantasmagoria 1 and 2, here
http://sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/NewSierraInstallers.html

These installers are made for modern systems (XP and later) and usually install the game so it will run in DOSBox.

If you want to look at Inferno's site,
Inferno's site for games on XP is archived here:

https://web.archive.org/web/20150418203834/http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm

There are two links for setup instructions for Phantasmagoria 2:

https://web.archive.org/web/2015052...filecabinet4/XpSetupsP_T/PDOS2_Setup.htm

https://web.archive.org/web/2015052...SetupsP_T/Guest/PhantasIIWin95_Setup.htm

For Phantasmagoria 1 Inferno says "Phantasmagoria (needed patch as well...but still doesn't run fully)"

Hi I’ve actually been able to get it installed and it seems to be working fine 😮 It doesn’t quite fill tthe screen but it’s close enough (also probably only the best I can get 😂) Thanks for the help and advice

If you used the installer that came with the game, you'll want one of the old patches.
You can find them here
