I've played hundreds, too, and keep a spreadsheet. More than half that I have played I rate only so-so, and at least a quarter are stinkers that I would not recommend.
I assume you tried the Shiver series, the Surface series, the Royal Detective series, and the Lost Land series? Consistently better games in those groups. Not much fantasy, but there is some other-worldly stuff. Lately, I have enjoyed the Amaranthine Voyage series, although they do have a lot pop-ups.
Calavera, Cadenza, the Dana Knightstone series = also better than average. Riddles of Fate series also pretty good.

I hadn't heard of these games until very recently but really enjoyed the first Nick Chase and have now started the second !! So thanks very much for letting us know about them, Marian !!
