I think everyone got lost in Barrow Hill: The Dark Path.
It was much easier to get lost (and stay lost) in The Dark Path in comparison to the first Barrow Hill game from 2006. Not sure why. Were there fewer hotspot nodes in the newer game? Were the nodes farther apart in the newer game? or with fewer visual cues as to what exit leads to what location?

The biggest problem I see in this type of point and click first person game is that we are all accustom to making 4 clicks right or left to turn 360 degrees or just 2 clicks right or left for a 180 degree or to be facing the direction we just came from. The problem comes in to play when the developer adds a click somewhere in the game. For example instead of 1 click moving you 90 degrees it only moves you 45 degrees. This really adds to the confusion when that extra click is when, say, you turn right in which case you need to use 3 clicks for a 180 or face the direction you came from but if instead of turning right you moved left where it only takes 2 clicks to face the direction you came from.

So if you wanted to turn around a go back the way you came and you are use to the 2 clicks right then you are off on another path...lost...when you thought you were going back the way you came. Now place yourself in this same spot later in the game your mind is messed with if you happen to go left this time. The fun really exacerbated when in another point in the game the 3 clicks are to the left not right or both directions are 3 clicks. Some games have a lot of these intersections while others only have a few. I think the ones that only have a few get us lost more because we are use to almost every intersection being 4 clicks.

Now this all being said...lets not even get into where there are sometimes intersections that take away from the 4 clicks where only one click turns you 180 degrees but watch out...turn the other way and it may be 2 crazy

Did any of this make any sense?

I agree with GreyFuss. The clicks needed to do anything in this game were not intuitive at all and contributed to confusion and getting lost. And, yes, you made perfect sense... I was trying to figure out how to say exactly what you did!

I have this downloaded to play but the more I read about it, the less I want to tackle it. I will one of these days though.

Yes. The lack of consistency in how far you turn makes it more difficult to orient yourself. If every node allows you 90 degree turns, it's easier to figure out. Even if you can't move in all 4 directions, you can at least keep track of where you are -- and it's easier to map.

I think RHEM differentiated between 90 degree turns and 180 degree turns by using a U-shaped arrow for the 180 degree turns.

The ability to pan doesn't always improve things. If anyone remembers the jungle maze in Atlantis 2, that's an example of how panning can make things at least as confusing as fixed angles.

Thanks GreyFuss
I've been trying to understand just what made this game so difficult to navigate and you've explained perfectly.
