I'm confused. Shouldn't the fan always be running? Depends on the computer model and which fan you're talking about. There are definitely power supply fans and case fans that will turn off when the computer is cool enough, or reduce speed enough that you can't hear them. There's no way to know if family's computer is a type that is meant to reduce or turn off any of its fans. We know nothing about what type of computer it is. But if the fan was always running since the computer was new, it would be more worrisome if it suddenly stopped running.

I have r case fans on my desktop... not including the video card and CPU fans and if the computer is one, they are running at all times. As Jenny said, I'd be worried if the fan WASN'T running. If family is talking about a case fan, it should be running all the time.
And, family, you really should at least put your computer to sleep at night. I shut mine down once a week too. If the computer is on and the fans running all the time, it is bringing in dust all the time too. Put it to sleep at night so the fans aren't running.
Once again, weeds are my life!

" If the computer is on and the fans running all the time, it is bringing in dust all the time too. Put it to sleep at night so the fans aren't running." That's one of the reasons for MY question. I keep all my computers shut down when they're not in use .... not just at night .... as surely leaving them running 24/7 could shorten the life of other components besides fans ??

Yay! Retirement is here! Pick a day - mine is Sunday night - and just shut it down once a week.

Here's an article that talks about the pros and cons of shutting down/not shutting down the computer: Computer shut down or not

Thanks Marian. I remember reading something like that before and wasn't sure about turning it on and off so much, however, I have lot of dust and cat hairs flying around my house and the temperature in the area this computer is in, is probably warmer than it should be (in the summer anyway), plus I didn't see any reason to leave it on all day while I was at work, so it was turned off every night that I had to work the next day. So, it was left on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights and shut down the other nights, not actually every night as I stated previously. I'm going to go back to something like that.

Thanks for that link, Marian. I read the full thing and found it informative My oldest computer is now more than 20 years old - is used most days - and is, and has always been, turned off when not in use. My middle computer is now more than 14 years old - and the same goes for it as for the oldest And my newest computer is 4 or 5 years old (I think, would need to check) - and the same goes for that, too. I have plenty of fans of all types - and heat sinks - fitted to all three. I have a UPS to which all three are linked AND I have air con in that immediate area. In view of the excellent service I get from all three machines, I am happy to continue my regime of them being switched off when not in use

That's always my thing about putting mine to sleep at night and shutting it down at least once a week. It's all about the dust and cat hair!
