For those of you who played and loved the Quest for Glory games from Sierra, the Coles's new game, Hero U: Rogue to Redemption, was released on GOG a few hours ago. This game has been in the works for many years, and it is great to see it released at last. You can check it out here.

Thanks, Marian I got my "backer's email" - with a download link - today. [I was asked a day or two ago as to whether I wanted Steam or GOG - although the link I was actually sent today takes me to a "backerkit" address.] So hoping it's for the DRM Free version !!

Yes, I think it's possible to get through the game with very little combat - which made me wonder if this game could be included as part of Adventure Game Discussions. I wasn't sure, though, so I started a Darkside thread. I hope your game is DRM-free, Mad. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the game! I'm quite excited about this release. I loved the Quest for Glory games. I have also met and talked to Lori Cole before, because she and her husband live in the same area that I do, so it's fun times.

" I hope your game is DRM-free, Mad. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the game!" I found PDF manuals and stuff, Marian, but no "GOG" game key. Apparently that hasn't been sent to me .... yet

Thanks Marian! Sounds like an action-adventure game with a puzzle solving story mode, fits in with the Darkside stuff. Now, I just wish that game makers would understand that linear skill leveling, turn based combat and a fantasy theme does not an RPG make. *sigh* I'll jump off my soap box now...head first

Hopefully soon. Got my GOG code today, Marian, and have download the game plus manuals etc. However, I won't be playing it just yet as it appears a patch is expected to be released in a few weeks. So I will wait for the patch

I just found this on their Kickstarter update: There are some errors in the game books, a few dialogues and game events that could use tweaking, and at least one known "game-locking" bug.
(If you see a plaque labeled "Pyoter," it's best not to click on it. There was a bad line of code that freezes the game.) We will also keep a close eye on player reports and feedback over the next few months. I think what they mean by "game-locking" is that the game freezes up. If so, that's not fun, but it's nowhere near as bad as "game-stopping."

Oh .... I translated "game locking" as "stopping play". Is that not the case, then ?? But being able to complete the game "without using combat" might attract more buyers

Game locking means that the screen locks up/freezes, but I can see why you interpreted it the way that you did. Most designers don't bother to mention such problems, at least not that I recall. Oh, I'm grateful to them that the problem was mentioned, Marian, but I won't be playing the game until the patch is available

I remember my outrage when I came across actual combat in one of the old Quest For Glory games! What??? Fighting??? But ultimately it was those very minor encounters that allowed me to feel safe buying my first RPG, which was Baldur's Gate.
It's nice to see these old game styles being recreated.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Great game indeed - already finished my first playthrough. But why 'The Darkside'? It is not an action-adventure game: you can even complete it without any combat. And the battles are turn-based anyway, like in 'Quest for Glory', so I would rather call it a pure adventure game

Generally, a game that contains combat in any form, even if it is optional, is usually directed here to the Darkside forum - That includes games with turn-based battle. Many classic RPG's are defined by that style of play. There are also "Darkside" style games that contain a Story Mode, allowing an individual to take part in the game, but avoid combat. Personally, I would simply term games that fall out of the usual classifications as hybrids. In recent years there have been departures from what would be considered "pure" game genres and the foundational game definitions (yes, they did exist) are becoming less adhered to. Adventure gamers are more than welcome to discuss those hybrid games here, we don't bite. Well, maybe just a little.

Hi Marian I followed the path you have given, thank you, and DID get to a notice about the patch and what it fixes - but can't find anything to click on that will let me download it I don't use Galaxy and am wondering if that could be the reason ??

There is no indication as to whether the version being displayed by GOG for download - NOT via Galaxy - includes the patch or not and I obviously need to know that If I use Galaxy, am I able to download both game and patch files without them auto installing ?? [The reason I normally just download the files by browser is so that they go direct to my "Downloads Folder" and stay there until I want to install them.] If you think this needs to go to the Bugs & Patches Board, please move it and I will follow Thanks. Unable to resist - I have gone and played a small chunk The game is extremely reminiscent of the Quest for Glory games and, considering what I've played so far, very well done !! So I can see another small chunk getting played fairly soon

Despite having made good inroads, I decided today to re-start this great game - because now I know MUCH more about "managing" my character, I feel I could progress better. So, after my visit here today I'll be re-making myself !!!! EDIT : Did re-make myself and have made thunderous progress since

Oh, that's good news, that more games could be on the horizon [I will keep my fingers crossed then that Hero U does well for them.] I've already re-started the game !! But I quite often re-start RPG's after getting to know better how to "do" things from a preliminary play.... Well I hope you can manage to get back to it at some time, Marian

I'm really surprised that there haven't been more posts here at Gameboomers with regards to "Hero U". For me, it's a wonderful "modernised graphically" but definitely authentic Quest for Glory game and much credit is certainly due to the developers I think I must be getting fairly close to the end by now (I play veeery slowly ) and I know I'll be sorely tempted to immediately play it again !! But I must resist and get back to Blade Runner because IT has been ignored .... despite being one of my great favourites ] EDIT :Or maybe I'm not as close to the end as I thought .... I've just unlocked yet another new area !!

I think it's probably not getting much attention here because we are not categorizing it as an adventure game (which is a shame, because that's really what it is. Unfortunately if a game has any combat in it, even optional combat, it gets relegated to the Darkside). I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying it so much. That also bodes very well for when I play it. I did like the part that I played and am so glad that the enjoyment continues. I think the developers tried very hard to conform to the spirit of Quest for Glory as much as possible.

I don't really know how the game could be played without any combat, Marian. It IS very simple combat but of course, even so, it won't be to everyone's taste. I just can't see how certain quests could be completed without it so I'd be interested to be told

The no-combat is something I read about when the game was in beta testing; someone said that most enemies you can sneak past. I also thought I remembered reading that one of the beta testers got through the entire game without combat. I don't remember where I read that now, though, so would have to look for it. If I find it again, I will let you know. Maybe this is where I got the idea; this is from their Kickstarter page: In fact, there’s a Steam Achievement waiting for everyone who completes the game without killing any monsters. That will be one of the most challenging of the game’s achievements. Anyway, if I can find info that states you can positively get through the game with zero combat, I will let you know. There's a thread here where the developer talks about the possibility of no combat, among other things. And I guess this would be the "last word" on the subject for now - I found this in the game description on the Steam page: Most combat is optional for those who prefer a pure adventure game, but there are ample rewards for those who choose to valorously fight the creatures that threaten the school and all of Sardonia.

Good for you, Trail_Mystic !!!! What else is money FOR ???? I don't know, maybe groceries, mortgage payments, gas...nah! Honestly, this was a series I missed. It looks like a very traditionally structured RPG, which is something I always enjoy.

Ahhhhh .... The boring costs of living !! Hope you enjoy the games, Trail_Mystic. My favourites were nos. 4 and 5 EDIT :Finished Hero U last night. And nearly re-started it immediately because different paths can be followed to get through the game giving a slightly different experience. But I controlled myself - in view of all the games I have that I've not yet even started !! However, I have no doubts at all that I will be playing this game again at some time

Mad, congratulations on finishing the game! That was my thought exactly after finishing it: to start playing it again immediately Not only because of the different ways, but because of so many opportunities missed due to the lack of experience or knowledge in the first playthrough... 'Hero-U' is definitely supposed to be played at least twice.
