You might be familiar with Layers of Fear from several years back,
or at least have heard about it, and in case you might be confused
about exactly what this version is all about, let me explain.

It consists of remodeled versions of the three previous 'episodes' - Layers of Fear 1 (the painter),
Layers of Fear 2 (the actor) and Inheritance (the daughter)
which was a piece of downloadable content (DLC) - as well as two new tales, The Writers Story
and The Final Note (the musician). The first of these is an interstitial narrative added to tie the
whole thing together while the musician's story is more like another piece of DLC.

If I remember correctly, that was a First Look that I posted a little while ago. This is the full review.

EDIT: I had to go back and check to be sure! But yes, that was a First Look.

I am not surprised if a first look feels familiar to the subsequent review OB.
I do tend to utilise paragraphs from a first look into the final review, primarily on the basis that the broader reading audience might not have stumbled onto that first look, and also because I can't think of a better way to describe what I have previously written.
Hopefully you get more out of the final review, notwithstanding the familiarity smile

Well I like that part about the toggling option for the apparitions and also the button press setting instead of "mimic the action". thumbsup

As always, thank you for the informative review. Is this game point and click?

No it isn't KatieB. It uses the keyboard and mouse to get around but you can map the keys to suit. The mouse is used to interact with the world.

Great review, flotsam (as always). One thing I may have missed (?) in your review, or overlooked:
Does the game (I'd be playing the Steam version) allow the player to save-at-will? Or are there chapter replays....or is it the dreaded console-port-checkpoint-save system?
I can't spend hours at a clip at my PC, but would love to play this (I played the original)...only if I can pick my save spots (and, hopefully, more than one of them). I asked this question on the forums (Steam) and never got a direct answer. Thanks!
Rob

You sound like me, robedits! From the review...

The game saves automatically which only rarely didn’t happen enough to suit me.

THank you! (I did miss that). Which means it isn't for me. I need to be able to stop and get away from the PC at my choosing. Too bad! I miss the days when so many games had actual save slots.

I totally agree... I generally just don't have long periods of time at one stretch to game and need to be able to save and leave at will.

Excellent review flotsam! Thank you

I too don't care for auto saves unless they are frequent. I don't mind using a keyboard to move around, W A S D or arrows, you could even add an "I" for inventory etc

I played parts 1 and 2 earlier on and enjoyed them. Have not yet grabbed this one but am keeping an eye on it. I do not remember if one could die in the first two but can in this finale you are saying....OK. I am good at running away

Thank you Drac

I just became aware they recently released a further 'layer' called The FInal Prologue. Its free DLC if you have the game.
I imagine I will get to it at some stage, and will tell you about it when I do smile

This is very nice flotsam, thank you for the info. When you get around to it I look forward to your thoughts. You might already have it

It sounds like if you have already purchased the newer version of Layers of Fear before the prologue released it will auto update to the game when you start the game. If purchasing after the prologue released it should be included in the game download. "The final chapter can be accessed as a separate chapter within the base game’s menu"

Available Now

What is the Final Prologue?

And if you don't use Steam, the game is available at GOG and other places.
