Try using a wireless Xbox controller for windows. You need to do some gamepad configuring. I did not use the focus mode much so I only had one button for focus mode (switch focus on/off).

Hi LindaMarion -- when Dreamfall first shipped two years ago, many of us played it and struggled with the controls until we figured out how to set the controls to make movement easier. You can see the suggested control settings in the GameBoomers First Look at Dreamfall here (scroll down to the bottom of the page).

Even with these easier settings, some gamers still have trouble with the movement, though I agree that it's much easier after tweaking the settings! I have always thought it odd that the game seemed to have default settings that were aimed more at console gamers than at PC gamers.

Hi becky thanx - i didnt realise it was so old.i only bought it 2 month ago.i find it very very much easier using that way but what i find funny is keeping my left finger all the game pressed down on the "w" key on my keybourd.its not difficult but seems all wrong somehow why they did not include that in the interface?

By now I've played a few games where you press the "W" key to go forward and use the mouse to look around, so it doesn't seem so odd to me. In fact, I usually find it pretty easy. Though it does make it harder to drink my favorite chai while gaming. grin

Hmmm. Maybe that's a good thing. This particular interface is slimming for the gamer! They should add it to the Food Pyramid suggestions. laugh

Great thread, I've saved it for when I finally take Dreamfall off my shelf to play!

Becky - im not sure were talking the same thing.maybe yes i dont know. could you make clear for me and maybe others? TIA

before i read the thing from peter and len green i also used the "W" key to go forward but i also used the "A" "S" "D" keys to go different directions and i slided the mouse to get different camera angles

Now i keep my left finger on the "W" key all the time and never take it off or move it to another keyboard key, except maybe once or twice
all thro the game now i move everywhere all the time by only
sliding the mouse

is that what you mean also? all thro the game, left finger all the time pressing permanent only the "W" key and not taking it off, and right hand to slide mouse only to get zoe and april to move all the time everywhere?

if that really *is* the best way and ive found it so by very far why doent the manual or anywhere else recommend it?

Linda -- I no longer have the game on my hard drive to actually check it, but I'm pretty sure that there is a way in the Options menu to use the "W" key to move forward and the mouse to pan around as you move forward, which means that you just move the mouse around in order to change direction. This way you really only need to use the other letter keys if you somehow run right into something and get stuck. I think that's what you're describing.

I don't know why the manual doesn't recommend this configuration, and I also don't know why it isn't the default (the way the game would be played WITHOUT having to mess around in the Options menu). The only explanation I can think of is that Funcom for some reason thought that more console gamers than PC gamers would be playing the PC version, so they left the interface defaults set for console gamers.

Another thought is that Funcom assumed that adventure gamers would be able to figure out the complicated Options menu when console gamers wouldn't? But that still doesn't explain why they (apparently) left an explanation about this out of the manual!

seems they designed dreamfall more for consols than PCs

I've never used the W key for forward movement, my game is programmed to use the Up arrow - this seems so much more logical to me. It's directly adjacent to the Ctrl and Shift keys, which makes it handy when I want to walk instead of run, crouch or use stealth. So by doing all that with the left hand and panning using the mouse in the right hand - perfect navigation with no problems! laugh

i didn't have to program anything what so ever
i can either press "W" or "up-arrow" it doesnt make no different at all
but the essential is to keep my finger on 1 or other all the time without taking it off,and the only one thing i move to get any of the characters to move any were i want is to slide the whole mouse right/left up/down

Hi all,
I've started to play Dreamfall today and don't find the controls that bad at all - maybe because I've played games with similar controls before (shooters, RPG and such). It's all a matter of getting used to it; initially, I wanted to use the gamepad but for some unknown reason it just won't respond. Oh well. W-A-S-D and mouse works fine once you get the hang of panning the camera with the mouse. Also, you don't need to remember all the keys for actions because you can happily click away when fighting - also a feature borrowed from shooters/RPGs, I think smile
