I have played some superb oldies - Ark of Time, Blade Runner, Indiana Jones And The Fate of Atlantis, Daughter of Sepents and Flight Of The Amazon Queen spring to mind. All of them have needed serious tweaking - VDM, DOSBox, ScummVM, or the patience of a saint to get working.

Here's my thought - it would be most satisfying were some persistent coder to re-make these games for modern systems, taking advantage of all the advances in technology since first they were created.

All of the above are on my wishlist - what's on yours?

What Gaming rave would you bring back from the computer grave?

I'd like to see The Dig remade. But since remaking it would be nearly as much work as creating a new game, I think I'd rather see LucasArts create a new, original adventure. grin

Won't happen, but it's nice to dream.

I really enjoyed The Dig also but the one I would really love to see is Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. With todays graphics I think people would really enjoy all the wicked puzzles that were in that game. Legend of Kyrandia would be a good canidate for an upgrade too.

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

They did do a redo on the original Tomb Raider. But I agree if some of the old games that are masterpieces of adventure games it would be nice if they would redo them to play on Vista!

I played Tomb Raider Anniversary and I must say the overall gameplay experience is very different from the orginal game. There is a new save point system now compared to being able to save almost at any point in the old game. There are more traps now, the traps are more devious and the monsters are harder to kill. Yet, the more memorable rooms, characters and encounters are back in some form. Gamers may hate some parts of the game but many fans will not be able to stay away from it for long. I can bet that there are fans who loathed the changes as well as fans who welcomed them. I personally have completed the game but I will not want to play the game again because I really, really hated some parts of it.

If we want our favourite adventure games to be remade, are we prepared to risk having developers take them apart and put them back again differently?

most of the games mentioned above are RPG or Action games, not my cuppa, but I did enjoy Dragonriders of Pern as I fell in love with the whole book series by McCaffrey. No, I would not any of my favorites changed in the 'rework' for XP/Vista. Games I would love to be able to play on my XP are Shivers I, Grim Fandango, Neverhood, Beyond Time, Byzantine The Betrayal, the early MYST games, and the Tex Murphy series, and the Gabriel Knight series too. Not too much to ask, do you think? What fun to be able to play all these again, and again, on my XP.
Love, Betty Lou

Why don't you just buy a real old cmptr and replay the originals?

I love playing the originals - and derive much enjoyment from persuading them to work on XP/Linux.

I thought it would be interesting to give these classics a modern workover, as LucasArts did with Monkey Island.

Seconded. I thought I was the only one who played those two games. Add "Return of the Phantom" to that list.

As for remaking games like Day of the Tentacle or the other Lucas Arts games - I'd be happy if they just re-release the originals in a easily installable / playable disc for xp / vista.

The controls are different too. Lara can't jump high like she used to be able to, and can't back flip to higher ledges anymore or do any of the jumping sequences that included the backflip or side flip or being able to jump high. I didn't like the remake anywhere near as much as the original. It was kind of fun to see high resolution versions of the game environments, but the jumping puzzles weren't fun anymore because Lara's jumps were too limited, the enemies were not an improvement, and the save system was a nuisance (save points instead of "save anywhere"). So IMO TR Anniversary was a big disappointment. I'd read that some of the game was different, but I wasn't expecting Lara to be such a shadow of her former self.

Are you talking about the 256-color version of Secrets of Monkey Island as opposed to the 16-color version?

For the answer to the original question, I'd agree with Becky. I'd like to see The Dig made with up to date graphics. I imagine some of the game environments would be breathtaking.

I never got to play the first Tomb Raider so the Anniversary Edition was a way for me to experience some of what the first game was like.
