I am not very computer literate and I have the free version of AVG. I got a pop-up from AVG that recommended upgrading to the AVG 2011 version. Does anyone know if this is a valid pop-up and do you think I will have any problems if I should try to download it? I also have the same question for the update of Adobe Flash Player. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I wouldn't be surprised if the free version of AVG had started to use ads for the pay version. But you should still go to the AVG website and get it yourself (if you want it) rather than relying on a popup.

Gameboomers don't seem to like the current version of AVG, and AVG recently made a terrible botch of one of their updates, preventing Vista and Windows 7 from even starting.
***Check this thread***.

Here's ***another post*** about AVG 2011 from someone who tried it and didn't like it (and other people agreed with him that AVG has gone downhill).

Thank you so much for all of your help. Right now I have decided that I will not update my current AVG. I really haven't had any problems with it (I am on XP). When I get up the nerve, I may try to uninstall AVG and download Avast, although I am really afraid to do it.

funlcake, I went through the nightmare of using the update for AVG 2011. Not only did I have a hard time downloading the update, installing it was not a run in the park. And after it did install it locked up my user profile. It took two or three more tries at installation before my user profile finally quit locking up.

This version acts more like a Beta version than a finished product. If you want to see the problems others are having, go to AVG's free forum.

Last weekend I installed avast! on our system. Because of what the internet security version offered I'm am at the moment trialing that version. It isn't free, but you get to trial the program for 30 days before it stops working or you buy the rights. So far, I've no complaints, none, zip, zlich, nada. In fact, compared to AVG, my system is running much better.

One other thing I thought of, funlcake. After you uninstall AVG run a search for AVG, just select files and programs and put AVG in the search line. What you may find, as I did, are the other folders AVG constructed during its time on your computer. I chose select all from the task bar and deleted these files. Once they were gone I ran another search just to make sure. I was really steamed at how AVG had treated my system so I wanted it all gone.

funlcake sounds yummy about now, cant wait for the next fair season!

I do not use Adobe so I cannot help you with that, however if you wish to just do a search on free anti-virus and read some reviews I believe you will find just what is being mentioned in this thread.

I use both Avast and Avira free anti-virus, while they are both good the Avast is less intrusive and in at least one site that reviewed the many free options out there the newest Avast is considered the best.

If you follow the instructions and take your time the first go around you should have no issues and will feel like a pro afterwards. It is not as difficult as it seems the first time doing something.

If you have an issue then this section is the place to go. It is pretty obvious there are some very knowledgeable people here on this forum and there is absolutely no "put downs" you find on many other support forums.

You are quite correct Mad. I suspect it is the mods here who won't tolerate bad behavior. Thank you mods for keeping the caustic at bay.
