What are your favorite games from the 1990's, and are there any recent games (past 3 years or so) that come close to being the same type of game?

For example, if you liked the Gabriel Knight games, does Gray Matter come close?

If you liked Myst or Riven, maybe the RHEM series would come close.

If you liked Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, does Lost Horizon come close?

If you liked Obsidian, maybe Slip Space: The Burma Shave Analogy would come close.

If you liked Tex Murphy, would Conspiracies 2 come close?

If you liked the old Monkey Island games from LucasArts, does the new Monkey Island series from Telltale suit you?

If you liked Mission Critical, does Darkstar come close?

If you liked The Last Express, ummm... I can't think of anything like that.

If you liked Morpheus, is there any modern game that is similar?

Note that I haven't played all the games I've mentioned, so for all I know Darkstar is nothing at all like Mission Critical (beyond that both are sci-fi and use filmed footage) and the gameplay may be totally different.

Maybe you can think of a few other old favorites from the 1990's -- and newer games they remind you of.

I have'nt found any game yet that comes close to that little jewel, Amber Journeys Beyond.

For some reason that game sticks in my head yet.

Simple game, but great story.

Thanks Jenny, for making it possible to play, great help smile

I read where the Wiemers got shafted by the publishers, said they would,nt do that again.

Such a shame frown

Got of topic, I'll will have to think about a similar game.

Great topic thanks Jenny

Dunn

Yes. It's about the closest "modern" game I've come across that's comparable grin

If you liked the old Monkey Island games from LucasArts, does the new Monkey Island series from Telltale suit you?

Not totally because I'm not very keen on how the "modernised" Guybrush looks - even though his new adventures were quite entertaining smile

On the whole, I've played very few games that had that unfathomable "zing" of those from the 1990s.
Technological advances seem to have graphics playing a much more important role than story in so many games nowadays whistle

But I'm not complaining !!
There have been some very decent offerings these last few years.
And when I DO hanker for another taste of "the real thing" I just load up one of my oldies and have a blast laugh

Gray Matter comes close to the Gabriel Knight games, but I don't think it's quite as strong. Even so, it's one of the better games I've played, definitely high on my list. thumbsup

I've actually never played Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - shameful, I know blush - but I can't say enough good things about Lost Horizon. I did actually like it better than Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade game, but then, that game wasn't high on my list.

Would people here count The Longest Journey as a '90's game, or a 2000 game? If it's the former, then I can't think of any game in the last three years that can live up to it, even though I've played a lot of great games this year. I keep waiting for some game to come along sweep me away in the same vein, but it's been quite a while since that has happened. It's a hard game to match. yes

In most countries it seems to have been released in year 2000 or later. But the earliest releases were in 1999. It's close enough for me though. I always thought Nightlong (1997) resembled the Stark side of The Longest Journey, though not the Arcadia side.

Syberia is another game where there doesn't seem to be any other game quite like it -- either a 90's game or a recent game.

Not really -- One of my favorite games from "way back" was or is The Neverhood.

No game of recent memory even comes close. The Neverhood was done entirely in clay! It was a one-of-a-kind. snicker

I loved the Monkey Island/Simon the Sorcerer/Discworld games and I think the newer games that come close are the Runaway games.

I liked the Tex Murphy games too and I think the Secret Files games remind me of them.

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

Jenny, I agree, Syberia is a one of a kind experience and very high on list as well. smile

I've never played Nightlong, but I may have to look into it at some point. Sounds intriguing. thumbsup

I've been thinking about this topic! grin

Of the classics from the 1990s that I've played:

Myst I think the closest recent game to the Myst series is Aura 2 (Sacred Rings). I'm defining "recent" as games released in 2008 or later, according to the Pagoda Game Database. The RHEM series is somewhat like the original Myst, but Riven and Myst III, IV and V have more graphical variety and the puzzles don't come as fast and furiously as they do in the RHEM games. If you like casual Hidden Object games, the Mystery Case Files games (Return to Ravenhearst and later) have something of a "Myst" feel to them, especially with the large environments and FMV characters. You also might want to try the Drawn series of casual adventures, which have a similar "you are drawn into another created world" theme, though the portal device in the Drawn games involves paintings rather than linking books.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis In addition to Lost Horizon, you might want to try Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis and Memento Mori. They range over several historical/archaeological locations and involve dastardly conspiracies.

Obsidian This game is an odd duck. Everything in it is photorealistic and surreal, and there's the strange science fiction computer/robot/alien theme going on. Outcry springs to mind as somewhat similar, with its photorealistic surrealism. Another idea -- The Experiment, which has a similar theme of a young woman looking for a young man in a surreal Earth-yet-alien environment. Again, the puzzles in The Experiment are quite different than those in Obsidian.

Tex Murphy I haven't played Conspiracies 2 yet so I can't compare, but if you want an FMV mystery adventure, you must play Yoormujak's Ring. It's a great game and the interface is much easier to deal with than that in the Tex Murphy games, though you should know that the game is voiced in Hungarian with English subtitles.

The old Monkey Island games from LucasArts In addition to Tales of Monkey Island, there's the new Sam & Max series, Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout, Ceville, the Ankh series, and The Whispered World.

The Last Express Yes, difficult to think of something like it. The "rewind time" feature isn't something you encounter a lot -- Shadow of Destiny had a similar mechanic, but that's an older game too. I'd describe The Last Express as a historical mystery thriller in a self-contained space. The story is character-driven, and it's impossible to see everything in the game with just one playthrough. There's probably a recent adventure out there that qualifies, but I can't think of it offhand. The closest game I can think of at the moment is a casual game -- Little Noir Stories: The Case of the Missing Girl, where you have to play through the game at least twice to see the result of the conversational responses.

Morpheus Dark Fall: Lost Souls has a similar theme of entering individual's memories/past to resolve what's going on in the game. There's also a new episodic adventure, The Dream Machine, which has a similar theme.

Syberia It has a very different puzzle style than Syberia, but the PuppetShow series of casual Hidden Object games reminds me of Syberia because of the mechanical "characters".

Becky,

I think your comparison of the Monkey Island and Ankh games is a good one. thumbsup

Jenny, I'm curious what exactly do you mean by "the same type of game"? What kind of information are you looking for exactly?

To me the adventure genre hasn't changed much from the 90s as far as gameplay goes. The interfaces and puzzles got simpler, and the games got shorter and more low-budget in general, but that's pretty much all that changed.

Oh, and definitely your choice of what are the modern representatives of (or games inspired by) some classic games from the 90s seems spot on.

Not sure exactly which older game it's similar to, but I found Whispered World had that "zing" of some of the older games I played. Really, really loved it and hated for it to end.

I loved the Sierra game Laura Bow and the Dagger of Amon Ra and,of course, the early King's Quest games. Didn't care much for the last one. Laura Bow was the first PC game I played and it was an amazing experience. I am not sure which modern games I could compare to it or the KQ series.
