I can't decode the second part of El Toro's journal.

The astrolabe gives me completely different letters from those in the walkthrough. I think I need to rotate the asrtolabe somehow using these numbers on its outer circle and the numbers in the sketch but I don't know how I can rotate it.

I think having the astrolabe just triggers the decoding puzzle.
The game gives the frame with the coded message and decoder similar in all puzzle. So I don't know why you get different letters.

Are you opening the correct page to decode and then checking the walkthrough? - there are five (5) pages to decode.

I know there are (5) pages. The symbols still correspond to different letters. For the example this marked symbol corresponds in the walkthrough to (th) but here corresponds to (pul)

astrolabe2

If The astrolabe cannot be rotated, then what's the use of the numbers on the outer frame and the ones in the sketch? (see the picture in the previous post)

Hi nilecrystal,

That sketch is used later in the game, once you have the stand that it sits on, and you know where to place it so you can set it and look out to sea.

For decoding the journal, all you need is the top part of the astrolabe, and then follow as per MaG's walkthrough:

Open El Toro's journal. Open to the page with coded words. See the round thing on top of a stand. It is an astrolabe.

Click on the coded words to be decoded in the journal.

A new page with the paragraph that has the coded words.

Click on a script and then click on the letter(s) you think it corresponds to.

All the highlighted scripts will have that letter on top of them. There are 5 pages to be decoded.

Do you see the letters change in the journal?

Thank you Rushes. So the astrolabe just triggers the puzzle but doesn't decode it !!

It's decoded by trial and error just like the first part of the code. Right?

That's right. smile You should be able to work off the paper alone now.
