Hi Boomers of The Darkside. I have always played adventure games in the past but I am now looking for a change.

I would like advice as to whether or not anyone knows of any 1st Person Shooter games whereby the whole game, including shooting, is mouse driven (by that I mean by a standard point and click mouse).

I have played the action/adventure game 'Blade Runner' several times and find the shooting part of the game to be just right for me. A right click of the mouse brought up a red cross hair sight and then left clicking would fire the hand gun.

I most definitely am not looking for anything more than a single hand gun, no rocket launchers, no grenades etc etc.

Thanks everyone

Hi ya Bernie, I don't do shooters as the only thing I manage to shoot is my feet. But I know we have some FPS fans so you should get some great recommendations. wave

Bernie,

It will be very difficult to find a good first person shooter that is point and click. Blade Runner, a game I played, if I am not mistaken was released in 1997, a lot of years ago in terms of games, and it was more like action adventure. I find the best way of switching to shooters is to start with an easy shooter and if necessary to use cheating (only available for PC), nothing to be ashamed of, something like using stabilizing wheels when learning to ride a bike.

Point and click shooters are a very, very rare breed. Although it's not a shooter, the first Witcher game - an RPG - had the option of playing with a point and click interface.

The Witcher is an excellent game, I didn't know has the point and click option. No guns though, but it could be a very good choice to start the switch to Darkside. I was once Adventure only player, went to RPGs and started some tough shooters, for these I needed to cheat many times. 2 years ago I got a PS3, no cheats then, and I can play shooters without problem now, even tough ones.

Now I play Adventure, RPG and shooters, it is worth the first effort.

Witcher 2 does not have the point and click option, but Witcher 1 does.

It would be a great one to transition to the Darkside with great characters, story and combat.

The first Divine Divinity was "point & click" and had a good story but would it be easy enough for a "first" action game ??

I thinks so Mad. I don't remember the battles being too difficult. A few times I had to leave someone behind and go level up more and then come back to wreck havoc. Course, once I got the scorpions in a cage, it was all over but the crying. wave

Bermag my favorite Darkside games are all the Tomb Raider games. These games use the keyboard as well as the mouse but maybe some day you will be ready to try them. wave

HERE you can download The Witcher Demo. Divine Divinity has a Demo also, however I cannot put a second link here, you could google - Divine Divinity demo download, you'll get several options. As always remember to have your virus protection on when downloading this type of file.

Playing demos is a good way to see if one may like the game or not.

Thanks Mcc wave

You should have been able to put in more than 1 link, at least I think you should have been. I'll ask MaG.

The first Dungeon Siege game is a very good rpg that is point and click , along with the classic Dungeons and Dragons games , Icewind Dale (both games) & Baldurs Gate (both games) . The latter can , most of the time , be purchased from GOG for $10 each . Demos and video clips can be streamed on youtube . Dungeon Siege clips can be viewed on youtube as well . The game can be purchased fairly cheap on ebay , for $10-$20 , and it normally comes with the Legends of Aranna expansion if purchased in the right version . The last time I saw Dungeon Siege on Steam , it was $40 plus . Too expensive ! A good fps game to get your feel wet with , is the first Medal of Honor game .

Going back to the original question from Bernie, there appear to be two components. One is whether you need something other than a normal mouse to play and the other is the nature of the controls.

Most FPS games only require a normal mouse. although sometimes gameplay can be enhanced by using another type of controller. I use an optical cordless mouse for greater ease/sensitivity (and now miss it as I wrestle with thumbsticks on the Xbox 360!), but that only has the usual buttons.

As to the second part of the question, in my experience most FPS games rely on the mouse for aiming and shooting, but you will also need to use your left hand on the keyboard to move and perhaps perform one or two other actions. However, this is not usually complicated and often you can reconfigure keyboard controls to suit your own particular preferences.

I regard myself as pretty ham-fisted on the keyboard, but I still manage to play FPS games with enjoyment!

As to recommendations, it is always a matter of what appeals to your imagination. Some folks like military games (Call of Duty etc), others prefer space/monster shooters. I am very hard to please, and still find HalfLife 2 a very hard act to follow, best obtained in the Orange Box which has the additional joy of Portal. I also thoroughly enjoyed some of the earlier Prince of Persia games. There is more to them than mere gung-ho blood lust.

It is probably worth mentioning that weaponry usually starts simply (in HalfLife with a crowbar!), but that as the game progresses you are likely to gain other options: do not let that put you off as you can still stick to what you prefer and will usually be able to select an alternative weapon quickly and easily even in the heat of battle.

I hope that these comments are of some help. wave
