When I first tried to play the game I always got an error message about the server not being online.
Then I tried some patches, but some of them didn't work from scratch or stopped after asking for the language (c.q. US English).
Subsequently I applied the latest patches, but now I'm always getting the following error message when trying to create a login account:
ERREUR DU LECTEUR DIRECTOR
PROPERTY NOT FOUND
#LOGIN
ERREUR DE SCRIPT CONTINUER?
YES (it stays) NO (it quits)
So is the server still online, and how exactly can this problem be solved, please?
Thanks in advance.

Director Player error sounds like a QuickTime-related error rather than a server problem. Make sure you're using the QuickTime version that came with the game.

Do you really think that's the problem, since this occurs before its start, and before applying whatever patch there'd be he couldn't find the server?

------------------------------------------------------------
When I try to reinstall the game, he says you've already got a newer version (referring to the patch applied, of course), and then I tried to reinstall "Quicktime" separately, resulting in exactly the same message, so my question for you is whether it is such a smart move to replace it with an older version, huh?

I don't know if the game works with the current version of QuickTime.
It did work with the older version.
QuickTime in Windows is not always backwards compatible.
If the QuickTime that you are using is not working properly with the game, it may prevent you from logging in.
I have no idea if any active servers for the game still exist. I played it years ago -- on a Mac, using a patch that is now out of date. And I gave the game away because I had no idea if it would play for the person I sent it to.

If you decide to use the older version of QuickTime, you have to be sure to uninstall everything to do with QuickTime even if it warns you that some applications may stop working. Those applications would only be other games that use QuickTime. Then install the older version of QuickTime. The reason for uninstalling everything to do with QuickTime is that if you leave residue behind, you'll most likely get another error next time you start a QuickTime game because you'll have parts from different versions that conflict with each other.

If you ask me, the game is not worth the trouble. I agree with Gamehound's assessment of it here
http://www.gameboomers.com/wtcheats/pcIi/InMemoriam/inmem.htm#Closing

But if you want to keep trying to play it anyway, these are the only suggestions I can come up with for things to try:
  • Replace your QuickTime version with one the game ships with (or with one that's known to work properly with the game)
  • Search out a newer patch that is compatible with your version of the game and is the latest one (to maximize the chance of having the game connect to an existing server).
  • Wait for someone else who is currently playing the game to come along and tell you how they did it.

Okay, many thanks again: I still fear that their servers are down anyway, but I will uninstall my quicktime version and install theirs instead, my dear friend.

I just did this, but all to no avail regrettably, since exactly the same error keeps returning, and I already applied that particular patch as well, plus I contacted them too (no reply).

Unless someone is currently playing the game successfully and able to log in, my guess is that the servers are down or not configured properly. If the publishers can't be bothered to maintain the websites, there's really no way to play it. You might try emailing Ubisoft tech support, but good luck getting an answer.
https://secure.ubi.com/login/login.aspx

If you had the "Missing" version published by TAC, you could email here
http://www.adventurecompanygames.com/tac/forms/tech_support.html
but they're not so great on support either.

No: it's definitely "In Memoriam", and I had already e-mailed them as well, but the only reaction from them was this:

Recently you requested personal assistance from our on-line support center.

We will assume your issue has been resolved if we do not hear from you within 48 hours.

Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you.

Did you email them back?

-----------------------

Loading up my game right now

-----------------------------------------------------
Keep in mind that I have The Adventure Company Version known as "Missing Since January" --- But I have just loaded up my game and have no problems. Here is what I did.

Keep in mind also that if you wish to reinstall and try this you must first uninstall what you have done (both the main game AND
the folder located in "My Documents" known as Missing_Save_Files I'm not sure if you folder will be named this or "Memoriam_Save_Files"

Also remember that the patches themselves are extremely small and install very quickly, that is why they look like they haven't been installed at all.

You must have the latest vrsion of Adobe Macromedia Shockwave Player installed before you begin.

You can get it from here:
Shockwave Player

If you don't the game will not play correctly.

You must also have at least QuickTime 6 to run the game.
I am using Quicktime 7.2 with now problems.
Also if you do not have a free online email --- sign up for one now. You can get a free one from either .hotmail -- .aol --- msn --etc. Online email addresses work the best for some reason.)
Sign up and leave it open before you install the game.

At the Splash Screen --- Click on SETUP

Allow the installation to begin, when completed click on continue.

Put in the CD2 --> Click OK

If a window opens up with the contents and folders of the
CD2 --- close it.

A warning screen will appear -- click on it to continue
The First Video will open.
2nd Warning Screen will appear -- click to continue
This will happen for about 3 screens or so --- continue to click to advance unitill you get to the registration screen. Exit out of the program.

You must apply patch:

in_memoriam_v2.1_pc.exe

(Double click on the patch -->Choose RUN --> ENGLISH -->Finish or OK.)

then the server patch

Patch_Missing_2005_09_05.EXE

(Double CLick on the patch --> follow the prompts to the end.)

note: Without these patches properly installed --- the error message that the "server is down" will appear)

Now go to Start --> All Programs --> Missing --> Double click on Missing to start the program. You will see the Video and the Warning screens once again.

At the registration screen, supply a login name and an "online email address" instead of your regular email program

(you can get a free one from either .hotmail -- .aol --- msn --etc. Online email addresses work the best for some reason.)

The server will now respond properly --- and you will recieve the message that an email has been sent. Click on "open email"
This will take you to the home page for your online email program. At this point you can use either the online email page that you had opened previously to see the new email from SKL, or you can resign into the email from the email home page that has just appeared. (Your choice)

Open up the email and you will see your password which you will use throughout the game. Return to your game (just use the ALT+TAB keys) and enter your password (case sensitive). Click on CONFIRM.

The game will now begin.

Thanks for all this, but apparently they had answered me online, and the problem was the final patch for "In Memoriam", which I couldn't download from any mirror at all, but they included it, and I could finally go online, plus, incidentally, I wonder whether the next part (the thirteenth victim) is still available?

Apparently not, I'm afraid, but do you happen to possess this as well?

Note: The 13th Victim is an expansion and requires you to have Missing: Since January installed on your PC.

So I wonder whether it would also work with "In Memoriam", huh?

I don't think it will.
Missing Game of the Year Edition includes the 13th Victim addon though. If you're interested, here it is for cheap

Evidence: The Last Ritual is not the same as The 13th Victim.

I don't think there is an English version of The 13th Victim for In Memoriam. But there might be a French version. This page
http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/missing-the-13th-victim
mentions "In Memoriam : La Treizieme Victime." So if your In Memoriam is a multi-language version you might be able to use the French version (if you can find it for sale).

Indeed so, because, apparently, "The Phoenix" hasn't been caught in "The 13th Victim" after all, so he is back in "Missing 2" or "Evidence: The Last Ritual", which I'm trying to buy online.

------------------------------------------------------------
[blip]: I just finished the first part of "Teuchmos" (all the boxes on the top went orange), after which the game just quits ( I already tried 3 times).

-----------------------------------------------------
And now even a fourth time: hopeless.

Yup. I would tend to agree.
This game isn't aging particularly well.

Anyone reading this have any ideas for Bart to try?

None that I can think of. Unless it is to make sure that you have the most up to date version of Adobe Flash and Shockwave.

Strange: I just tried to, but for the Flashplayer I don't get to see the installation file at all and when I tried to install the Shockwaveplayer I got an error message from Windows, after which the browser closed.
