It may be a setting you need to change. My comcast mail can be set to hold spam mail for long periods of time to allow you to check them before permanently deleted.

Linda,
Click on your mail icon and go to view all mail. Underneath and to the right of your screen name click on options and from there you can set your mail settings.
Another option is to go to the bottom of the main AOL page and click on help. There is an 800 number there that you can call for customer service and they will fix you up.
