I can hardly believe I finally powered up the cog room (took 3 days) and jumped onto the rock with the journey cloth (first try, but I had to sidle up the ledge below). Now I need to jump onto one of those long revolving walkways. I've already fallen into the abyss twice, so I really could use some hints as to the best way to make that jump. Should it be a running jump? I notice that here is a little ways to back up for a running start without falling off the rock.
Thank you, anyone who can help me with this!!

eek eek eek

If you've only fallen into the abyss twice, you're doing pretty well! This is one of those unfortunate spots where there isn't a whole lot you can do but keep trying and falling over and over again (getting the Yeesha page in Kadish was another of them for me).

Do the jump in "run" mode definitely...

There's not much that can be said. It's all a matter of timing. I usually stand in the centre of the pillar, back off to about 1/3-1/2 of the way along the pillar, put caps lock on (to ensure a running jump) and start running just as the walkway starts to sweep past the pillar. However, timing all depends on precisely where you're standing.

Thanks, all! It took about 10 tries, but I made it! On one of the tries, my leg got caught on the rotating ramp railing, and the only way I could get off was to jump into the abyss...

What I usually found worked was to back up just a few steps from the edge--maybe 3 or 4 feet. Aim yourself in the proper direction, and then wait until the platform is a little to your left--when you land, you want it to be facing straight towards you.

When you think the timing is right, RUN forward and jump when you reach the edge of the cliff.

Caps Lock works if you're having problems hitting so many keys at once, but if you can manage it, using the shift key to run gives you a bit more control. If you decide your timing is off and you want to try again, you can take your finger off the shift key and hold back on the cursor keys, and hopefully stop before you run off the edge.

Of course, now that you got it, the above's not so useful, but you'll definitely be seeing more of those jumps. evil

Fortunately, Cyan has indicated that there will be no additional puzzles relying on jumping in just the right way in the second expansion pack...

That is fabulous news! I REALLY don't like that sort of thing.

I have an admission to make:

I liked the jumping in Gahreesen. Some of the jumping elsewhere (over lava, for example...) was just annoying. But I really liked the enormity of Gahreesen and the jumping "puzzles" involved.

What I didn't like was that the slightest misstep sent me all the way back to Relto.

And going back to Relto meant waiting for Relto to load, walking to my bookshelf, taking down the Gahreesen book, linking, waiting for Gahreesen to load, getting back to whatever journey cloth I touched last, walking through the age until I got back to where I was, and falling off the cliff again.

After falling, couldn't we have just appeared back on top of the cliff we fell off of? Or at least somewhere nearby? <img border="0" alt="cry" title="" src="graemlins/cry.gif" />

That was what bothered me about the jumping too--doing the actual jumps would have been fun if it hadn't been for all the hassle that you had to go through when you missed...

Now I'm trying to jump from the tunnel to get the Relto page now. At least I don't have to go back to Relto after each attempt!
Any hints on making that jump? I thought I saw something about it a long time ago. I guess I'll do a search for it...
I REALLY,REALLY don't like this jumping business!!I wou'dn't be spending even 2 minutes on it if it wasn't a "Myst" game.
It was this sort of action stuff that killed of my beloved Kings Quest series...

OK -- got the relto page got my fireflies and set up the 2 buoys. tested them out and everything was fine. So I went to get more fireflies..But somehow my buoys must have moved, because I fell into the water and the buoys rolled away. Now I have to set them up again and test them again. I wonder if they'll roll away AGAIN!!
Gosh, I can't wait for a new Myst game where you don't have to do this stuff. It
's almost not fun...

I almost lost my mind over those fireflies and the bouys--to me, that was the worst part of the entire game. Even more so than some of the jumps... mad

Ok -- the buoys are backand I'll try the fireflies again..But if it doesn't work out this time, I think I'll get some dinner.
At least my relto is nice and cozy with a rug and fancy designs around the outside. I took a swim in the pool while I was there.
Now that the weather is warm, I changed my avatar's clothes from the heavy sweatshirt she was wearing to something cooler in a light, springy color. I feel like she could have used a swimsuit for all that buoy setting-up...
