Yes, I've used it a couple of times recently. Microsoft is relentless with this Windows 10 upgrade! I have two people who want to stay on their current systems - one is Windows 7 and one is Windows 8.1.

It amazes me how much Microsoft is pushing win 10. I for one am staying with 8.1... too many of my friends are having trouble with 10 and I am reading issues with Nvidia issues and with surface pro video issues...

Don't know about the Surface Pro, but I'm having no issues at all with Windows 10 and my Nvidia video card. This last update added a lot of the features I'd been missing too.

I've found the GWX Control Panel works perfectly without having to mess around, it's a free download, only heard about it by reading lots of info. after already disabling Windows Updates, but after awhile they starting appearing on my screen once more. There were also some hidden files installed without my knowledge and GWX got rid of them as well, you can still have the Security alerts. Also read that if you have Windows 7 (as I have) you don't really need Win. 10 until Win 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft. Here's the link if it's any help. http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

You don't HAVE to get Windows 10 or Windows 8... I've left several people on Windows 7 for various reasons. But you will have to move to the new operating systems sooner or later. I've elected for sooner as I work on a LOT of different computers. Windows 10 is slowly shaping up to be a very good operating system, although there are still some quirks and issues.

The one thing I'm finding with the people who have chosen to take advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 is that it has made their computers so, so much faster. And the vast majority of these are low end laptops.

But for those people I've recommended they stay with Windows 7 and the 1 person who has chosen to do so, I just have to keep getting rid of the update even after I've checked the "ignore" this update. I checked and after not finding much information, I did find GWX Control Panel in an article at the winsupersite which is trustworthy. They didn't necessarily recommend it, but the author said it worked well for him. I may have to check it out.

I also have the GWX Control Panel installed just in case, although I guess I am lucky I have never been Pushed to install Win 10, just a lot of suggestions to update, etc.
And an advanced note regarding the GWX Control Panel, I have heard from reliable sources that MS might find a way to bypass the GWX, is it Rumours? or truth? Only time will tell.

I am with Draclvr, Win10 is very solid and fast, again the only reason for going back to Win8.1 is the problem with my Intel HD 4000 graphics card, but MS is working hard to fix this, when I first installed Win10 I had 8 Adv. games that would only play in a Small screen with black bars on each side and my Favorite game Culpa Innata would play But not only in a small screen but it would Shake and Rattle all over.

Now when MS came out with a huge patch (actually they don't call it a patch but I forgot the actual name) I re-installed Win10 to re-test it and of the 8 games that played in a small screen, 4 of them now played in a full screen and Culpa Innata although still plays in a small screen played perfectly, at least during the 20 minute test.
So you can see that MS is working hard to make Win10 compatible for everyone, or at least for the majority.
I am back to Win8 but I hear through the Grapevine that there is another Patch (or whatever it is called) release on the horizon and rest assured I will again re-test Win10.

To sum up, when I get a new Laptop down the road, I will make sure Win10 is already installed, and with the Proper Video card, I am more than confident that Win10 will be the Best version of Win that I have owned and I go way back to Win3.0.

GWX Control Panel is the only solution, right now, to do away with those annoying pop-ups/notifications.

There are some upsides and downsides upgrading to Win 10. Downsides first:
-unless you opted out of all the Privacy Invasions by M$ when you went through the set up screens, everything you say type, search, etc. goes straight to M$. They are the new Google. You either care or you don't.
-M$ is moving to a pay OS and it will cost you $ after the free 1 year is up. Office has moved to this model.
-you have no control over updates-period.
-not all PC/Laptop manufacturers support Win 10. AAMOF, many of the 3 year old/older models are not Driver S/W supported. This is resulting in the especially the dreaded "Limited Connectivity" WiFi bug.

The up side:
-It is miles better than Win 8/8.1
-it is a blend of new and Win 7, something that most folks will find easy to navigate or figure out on their own.
-Updates, including Drivers, are now automatic. If a driver is outdated you can, oftentimes, update Drivers through the Device Manager.

And if that is not enough, M$ is abandoning certain chipsets in their quest for adoption of Win 10. Read about it here:
http://arstechnica.com/information-techn...-to-windows-10/

I have not tried to game on Win 10 yet. Getting my older PCs to run on it is enough of a challenge for me right now. smile

Some good points, but also some caveats to these points. As far as the data collection, then you should also stop using Macs as they do the same thing. Microsoft has been doing this since XP. They shot themselves in the foot by not being clear and making it hard to know what is fact and what is fiction. In my opinion, this should be an "opt in" with prompts to ask if you want certain data collection to be turned on.

Only the Windows 10 Home versions have no control over updates. I believe Pro and Enterprise has control unless Pro is an upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 Pro.

The "subscription" FUD for the operating system is just that. This free upgrade to Windows 10 is good for the life of the computer. Next computer I build, I will have to buy it. Once again, Microsoft makes it hard on itself by throwing things around like "Windows 10 as a service..." There will no longer be Windows 11 being in development and then being sold to us. They will be adding features and updates and improvements on an ongoing basis. Of course, with Microsoft, one should never say never.

And listing the automatic driver updates as a "positive" is just the opposite for me. I think automatic driver updates is one of the WORST things they have foisted on users. It may be fine for the vast majority of my customers who are in their 70's and 80's, but for gamers it can be a disaster. That shiny new video card driver may render some games unplayable. It's the first feature I turned off. And I NEVER update video card drivers from any source except the manufacturer.

I read that Microsoft is not going to support any other operating systems on Skylake CPUs. In fact, going forward to next gen processors, as I understand it, using the latest generation processors will always require the latest generation operating system.

And don't get me started on gaming on Windows 10!!! I have a thread stickied at the top of the Glitches forum... it was very frustrating as Windows 10 blocks several forms of DRM. No one loathes DRM more than I do, but in some cases, I held my nose while I played the Bioshock games or the last Alice Madness Returns. I have adventure games like A Vampyre Story which I enjoy replaying now and then. Nope. Can't play them on Windows 10 because of the DRM. Other than that, gaming has been going pretty well.

I understand WHY Microsoft is getting really aggressive about eventually getting only one platform out there. Right now, they are providing support for no less than 5 operating systems - not counting the servers. Although support for Windows 8 is going away soon. No other company supports their operating systems as long as Microsoft does and I'm sure it's a nightmare. All this change and dealing with growing pains is hard and users are going to chafe - I'm one of them. While I really like Windows 10, there are a lot of things that I don't.

This is a pretty good article by Ed Bott... especially on the so-called "spying" aspect of Windows 10. It obviously came out just before Christmas!

Don't Let the Grinches Put You Off Windows 10

It can affect non-gamers too. The same can happen with printers and other devices that attach to your computer, not just video cards for gaming. One day it works, and the next day, seemingly without reason, it doesn't. And then you discover Windows has "updated" your driver to something that doesn't work, leaving you with the job, not just of finding the working driver, but of figuring out how to prevent Windows from installing the bad one again.

I expect enthusiasts will come up with their own tweaks that will enable older version of Windows to use Skylake CPUs. There will certainly be versions of Linux that run on Skylake. And there are versions of Linux that have a user interface more like older versions of Windows than Windows 10 has.

A Vampyre Story is available DRM-free at dotemu.com
Also at one time the developer offered a patch for the disc version which removed the evil SecuROMv7 copy "protection" from the game .exe (though it supposedly improved other features too). I think this is the patch:

Their support for older software is why people continue to use Windows. Microsoft needs to remember that. Unpredictable changes that cause software (or devices) to suddenly stop working (not just games) are not something people will continue to put up with if it happens frequently. An answer like "Buy a newer printer" isn't acceptable when the printer is a deluxe model that cost more than the computer.

I was disappointed I couldn't get the Start Menu looking like I wanted after installing Classic Shell on Windows 10. Classic Shell had worked fine in Windows 8. On Windows 10 it seemed to have some unwanted "theme" imposed on it -- the colors were wrong, the print was too large, and it still had that ugly flat look. On the positive side, Classic Shell at least got rid of those ugly, space-wasting kiosk blocks in the menu. But from where I sit, Windows 8 is better if only because Classic Shell was able to make the Start Menu actually look like the one in Windows 7.

I like that Kingsley-Hughes embraces the positive things about other operating systems too... plus he can be critical where he needs to be. He's at least not a fanboi of any operating system gushing about how wonderful it is. crazy Just noticed that I incorrectly attributed the article to Ed Bott, when it was by Kingsley-Hughes!

I tried that fix for A Vampyre Story and it didn't work... If all else fails and although it would irk me to have to pay for it, you can pay $5 for the classic Start Menu from Stardock.

I don't like his snarkiness. Whether you call something "spying" or "data collection" is semantics. Not until towards the end of the section does he admit that

Scattering privacy settings all over the operating system, and not giving users a way to opt-out of data collection are decisions that, in my opinion, haven't helped facilitate transparency and build trust.

I wonder if there's a problem other than the DRM then.
DotEMU doesn't list Vampyre Story as compatible with anything later than Windows 7. Maybe it's a similar issue as Still Life not working on Windows 8 on most computers.

I notice that Stardock's Start10 still has the flat look.
I'm also not going to pay for something that goes on a school computer.
That's the school's responsibility.
Unfortunately it means months of red tape to get permissions to pay for something like that, which is why I was hoping to find something to do the job that was free.
I'm not using Windows 10 at home, though I have one computer with Windows 8.1.

There are several programs that do the same as Classic Start and Stardock's "Start10." I think "StartIsBack" is the one I ended up using on Windows 8 because the transparency looked better. It's interesting that StartIsBack has gone up in price since I bought it and now costs twice as much as I paid.

Seems people have already discovered how to install Windows 7 on Skylake: ***link***
Maybe not easy for the average user, but that comes later.

And I just read today that after a lot of noise from the enterprise, some Skylake chips WILL support Windows 7.

Intel's Skylake vPro chips will support Windows 7 after all

I just tried the method in the link from the original post and it didn't work for me. That is to say, I still had the Windows 10 logo in my notifications bar. It's not a big deal for me. I just changed the notifications options to hide the icon.

I did like the recommendation to hide the update notification in windows update for the optional update. I didn't know I could do that with update notifications. I used the same method to hide the optional update to upgrade to Windows 10. Now when I go into Windows Update, I don't see the annoying Windows 10 upgrade notice anymore.

I do expect to upgrade to Windows 10 before the one year is up but I want to wait a bit longer for it to become more stable. I'm very happy with Windows 7 for now.

Windows 10 is already very stable - not perfect by a long shot, but stable. But if you are happy with Window 7, you have at least 4 more years to enjoy it!
