Is it Jack Keane 1 or 2? Does your computer meet the minimum requirements? It has pretty high video card requirements.

Jack Keane minimum computer requirements...

*Processor Intel Pentium IV 2.4 GHz or equivalent processor with SSE3 (Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz or equivalent recommended)
*2 GB RAM,
*NVidia GeForce 8600 GT / ATI Radeon HD X1800 video card with 256 MB VRAM and Shader Model 3.0 support (NVidia GeForce 9800 GT / ATI Radeon HD 4850 or better recommended),
*1.5 GB HDD
*DirectX 9.0c-compatible soundcard

We are wondering if GOG has listed the wrong information for Jack Keane 1 and Jack Keane 2. The requirements listed on the original box for the first game are much lower. Even though you are using XP, your computer hardware specs definitely meet the minimum requirements for Jack Keane 1.

Are you using XP to access the internet? XP has not been supported by Microsoft for almost 2 years and you will not have received any security updates for that long. So, we are also wondering if you have some kind of virus or other malware that is causing some problems. It is no longer safe to use the internet if you have XP.

Since your computer meets the minimum requirements for Jack Keane 1, the only thing I can recommend is to contact GOG about your problem

There may have been an email address in the email you should have received as a receipt after purchasing the game.
You can also try this page after logging into GOG.

The point isn't not to use Windows XP for games.
The point is not to use Windows XP on the Internet -- unless you are a security expert like Steve Gibson, and know how to lock down your computer and restrict permissions to keep from getting infected.

Get an el-Cheapo computer with Windows 7 or later for Internet use. If you have to download a game from GOG or elsewhere, use Mr. Cheapie to download and transfer the game to the XP computer using a USB drive. No one says you have to use the same computer for everything.

You lose your enjoyment if you get a virus too.
But no one is saying you have to "upgrade."
Just keep your XP computer offline.

And have you checked in our Windows 7 and Games thread stickied at the top of the Glitches forum to see if any of your games are listed? We found that most older games ran just fine on Windows 7.

I keep an XP computer just for the very few games that won't play on Windows 7 or Windows 10. But I took it off the internet as soon as Microsoft stopped supporting it 2 years ago. It's just not safe and I don't want to lose what I have on it.

Samuel, your browser will not keep you safe from an operating system which no longer receives security updates. It's not about the browser or even your anti-virus software... it's about the security holes in XP which are no longer being patched.

Microsoft will support Windows 7 until 2020... It isn't that they give up; it is because they can't support ancient operating systems that can no longer keep up with advancing technology. They supported XP for 12 years which is something no other company does.

Yes, you could install a 2nd hard drive and install Windows 10 on it. But you would have to remember to disconnect from the internet when you boot into XP. I have a dual boot with Windows 7 on one drive and Windows 10 on the other one. But I don't have to worry about disconnecting when I boot into Windows 7.

Jenny's suggestion of getting a cheap laptop or something with Windows 7 or even Windows 10 on it would be a much better idea if you can afford it.

Did you check out our Windows 7 and Games thread? I think you would be surprised at how many games play on Windows 7.

Samuel,
I would strongly recommend a second el-cheapo computer for Internet.

Your XP computer may already be infected. It's already having symptoms of infection, being unable to play a game it should be able to play easily. Of course there may be some other reason it isn't working. We can't be sure. But you've been browsing with no real security other than an antivirus, and that's not nearly good enough when you have XP. Unless someone is an expert in computer security I would not recommend they try to use XP on the Internet.

Say you installed a 2nd hard drive and managed to install Windows 7, 8, or 10 on it. The next time you booted to XP, it could infect your Windows 7/8/10 hard drive. You might have to reinstall everything to be rid of whatever malware is now on both drives.

If you really want to use a 2nd hard drive, I'd suggest you use some version of Linux on it. You can get a version of Linux with a Windows-like interface. The Linux operating system is very different from Windows underneath, and uses a different file system which Windows can't see, so you won't have the risk of malware migrating to the Linux hard drive from the XP hard drive that you would if using two different versions of Windows.

Now, that's an even better idea of a dual boot option - Linux. And a great point about infecting another operating system if your XP is infected. And you would still have to remember to take XP off the internet every time you booted into it. In my opinion, Jenny's first suggestion is the best one though... get a cheap Windows 7, 8.1 or Windows 10 computer for the internet. Take your XP off-line and only use it for gaming. It may already be compromised if you've been using it on the internet all this time though.
