I have been away for sometime and would like to start my gaming again. I am looking for advice on which games to start with. I love the adventure games, have played all the ones on the hall of fame lists and loved most of them and am looking for those types. There have been so many additions in the last couple of years that I don't know where to start. The lists of games are overwhelming. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

What sort of game are you looking for though? 1st person / 3rd person? Sci-fi / historical / serious / comedy?

In order not to give you an overwhelming list laugh we'll need a little help narrowing down what you're after.

I like both 1st and 3rd person. Some of my favorites include Myst, Gabriel Knight, Mysterious Journey, Shivers, Syberia, Dreamfall and even Dracula and of course Tex Murphy and Sherlock Holmes. So I guess to try to make it a little easier I like games with a storyline, played with a mouse not the keyboard. But the historical, comedy or serious factor does not matter so much if the storyline is there. I guess you would call most of these point and click adventures. A little darkness is fine with me and even a little horror. Just don't want to spend the whole game fighting monsters. And having to put in some thinking like in the Myst games is a bonus. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Hi Arora, I hope that our members will have lots of good suggestions for you. Two games that spring to my mind are The Book of Unwritten Tales and The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 - those games get high marks from many people. There is also a new Tex Murphy game, Tesla Effect, available as a digital download.

Nice to see you here, and welcome back. wave

I believe there's a "Return to Mysterious Island 2", I can't remember if I've played it. If you liked Mysterious Island I would also strongly recommend "Journey to the Moon" which is very similar in style.

Technobabylon, Gemini Rue, Primordia and Resonance all have very good storylines. I'm sure others will have some great suggestions for you! smile

Thank you. I will go check out these games with reviews and trailers. I appreciate the help in getting started again.

Thank you. Glad to be back. Kids are grown enough I can enjoy the game playing again. Looking forward to it.

From your recommendations I have purchased the Book of Unwritten tales both 1 and 2. I also did Vanishing of Ethan Carter and will probably do Technobabylon. I will definitely do Haven Moon when it is released. If any of the other Boomers have other titles they liked from the last 4 years or so I would greatly appreciate the chance to look at them. I would like to start a wishlist so I don't forget the names as new ones are released. Thank you so much in helping me return to adventure gaming.

Hi, Arora. I see that Dreamfall is one of your favorites. Have you played Dreamfall Chapters yet? You do have to use the keyboard to get around, but since you were able to do that in Dreamfall, I thought that might not be a problem? I actually found the controls a little easier than in the original Dreamfall. I had fewer issues with my characters bumping into walls this time around. lol The story is one of the best I've played, and I found the world and characterizations even more in depth than the original Dreamfall, more along the lines of TLJ.

Have you played The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav and its sequel, Memoria? They are great fantasy themed games, and they sort of remind me of melancholic King's Quest games. I thought Memoria was the better of the two, but I really enjoyed both games quite a bit.

Since you've played all hall of fame games, I assume you've played The Lost Crown. Have you tried The Last Crown: Midnight Horror? It's a short interval game in between The Lost Crown and the upcoming The Last Crown: Blackenrock. It's only about 4 hours or so, but it's great and a nice appetizer to tide players over until Blackenrock is released (which should hopefully be sometime this year smile).

Also, there's a new game called Kathy Rain that reminds me a lot of Gabriel Knight 1. Definitely one to check out if you haven't done so already. smile

EDIT: Also, since you said you're okay with horror, The Cat Lady has one of the best stories I've encountered in an adventure game. There is definitely so combat, but there are very dark, macabre themes. The protagonist, Susan and her friend, Mitzi are very well written as well.

Thank you Venus. I will check out The Cat Lady and Kathy Rain. I did purchase Dreamfall Chapters but have not tried it yet. And I can not remember if I played Dark Eye so I will look into that one as well.

Thank you for offering some titles to check out.
