I've read that there's a quest related to the Gwent cards game and that loosing a game would deprive you of a card. I'm in the royal place where you meet the emperor & Yennefer. After meeting them both I visited a courtyard where there's a guy who has an exclamation mark on him & he plays Gwent with you. I had bought cards from the inn in the prologue chapter & won from the guy at the inn. But no matter what I do, I always loose from this guy at the royal place. This has kept me from playing the game for weeks. I want to know if I loose & leave this place, would I be deprived of a card. Is he one of the important Gwent people that I shouldn't loose to, if I want to complete the related quest? I believe, once I leave this place, I won't be able to return here?

I can't answer your question because I haven't played the game - but maybe the information here will be of some help.

Otherwise, hopefully another player will be able to advise you. wave

Hugh, what is the name of the guy at the royal palace?

I haven't played Witcher 3 but some of our folks have. Hopefully, they can help you out. There were a lot of youtube videos on playing Gwent and on the Gwent quests but I'm not sure which, if any, of those would be helpful to you.

There are many quests with the Gwent cards! I have done all of them except collecting all the possible cards.
No, you can't lose a card. You can only get one if you win a game.
Some opponents are experienced though - so that you have to collect many more cards before playing with them.

I don't like or understand the gwent game. (Probably don't like it because I don't understand it.)

Good news is that playing the game is an option and it is not necessary to advance any portion of the Witcher 3 game but there is a Gwent side quest or two.

Here and here are a couple of explanations of the game. Maybe you can make more sense of it than I did.

Thanks, everyone.

His name appears as Nilfgaardian Nobleman. I can leave this place for now if it's possible to return later.

I have another question regarding the quests and the story of the Baron, 'Ladies of the wood' and 'The Whispering Hillok'.

Click to reveal..
Apparently there are a lot of opinions about the outcome of these quests. Apparently, if you free the tree spirit, the children are safe but the town & the Baron's wife suffer & the Baron hangs himself.
If you kill the tree spirit, the children get eaten, but the town is saved & the Baron takes his wife to a healer.
3. More people have positive outcomes if the "tree quest" is done before other related quests.

I most probably will kill the tree spirit to save the villagers & the Baron (although I haven't met him yet). But what if I free the spirit & not tell the villagers & the Crones about it (apparently there is that dialogue choice)? This might be a stupid question but would the fate of the Baron & his wife still be the same as if I freed the spirit and chose that dialogue tree when talking to Eaolderman & the Crones?

I'm asking this because there's a discussion here in the comments section & it's confusing.

Spoilers are welcome for these quests.

Here is what I concluded after several playthroughs.

Click to reveal..
Either way, Kill the tree or not, The kids disappear and Gran goes nuts because she loses the kids. The best overall outcome is to kill the tree. Let's face it the tree is evil. Later when you return it will then effect the Baron and Gran

Thanks, but do you know if the dialogue choice would change their fate?

If
Click to reveal..
you free the spirit & not tell the Ealdorman & The Crones about it in the dialogues, would they still be angry at Gran and would everything then turn out the same way with the Baron hanging himself?

That is what is confusing me at that discussion in the link. Someone mentions they did this in the top most comment at the time I pasted the link.

I was a little mistaken in my previous answer.
Click to reveal..
*Spoilers* When the Crones task you with killing the spirit locked away under The Great Willow, you have to kill it. If you free it, the Crones retaliate by cursing Anna - she's turned into a hag, and once you remove the curse, she dies. This, in turn, causes the Baron to hang himself back at Crow Perch. Kill the spirit under the Willow and you should be able to get the 'good' ending, where the Baron takes Anna away to be healed.

Yes off course. But I read that
Click to reveal..
if you free the spirit & choose different dialogues when talking to Ealdorman & the Crones, the outcome would be the same as if you killed the spirit.

Currently replaying 'Witcher 3' and trying to solve 'The Whispering Hillock' quest the optimal way.

It seems that there are three choices, and all of them are very bad frown

Click to reveal..

1. Kill the Tree spirit - children are dead, villagers are alive, Anna is crazy and Baron takes her away.
2. Free the Tree spirit - children are alive, villagers are dead, Anna and Baron are dead. Too bad frown
3. Hidden way: find and free the Tree spirit before talking to the Crones and the Ealdorman. Still, children are dead (because the Tree does not even promise to save them), villagers are dead, Anna and Baron are alive.

I think I will have to make choice 1, like I did it the first time I played it...

Holy smokes! this game took about 9 hours to download.

I won't be playing for a while (we have visitors for the summer and playing opportunities will be hard to come by), but I sure am looking forward to it.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I ended up doing choice 1 as well : )

There's another question I wanted to ask. It's about Brothers in arms & Reuven. I read that
Click to reveal..
in order to recruit Dijkstra/Reuven, you need to infiltrate witch hunters' place w/o raising suspicion during the quest, Reuven's Treasure & asking Menge about the treasure. But even though I manage to not raise suspicion, when I ask Menge about the treasure & then about Dandelion, I get attacked. This probably means my cover's blown. So would Reuven help me? In order to remain "undetected" you can only ask about Dandelion but that would mean not asking about the treasure.

There's another question I wanted to ask. It's related to the quests given to you by Sigi Reuven.

Click to reveal..
Sigi Reuven/Dijkstra wants me to Kill Radovid. I have to do five or six quests for him. Now I don't necessarily want to Kill Radovid. But not doing his quests would mean ditching a lot of experience points & also missing out a chance to meet Thaler who might give me 'Geralt' Gwent Card. Would it be possible to do Sigi's quests & choose not to Kill Radovid? I know Geralt won't be the one to kill him but I don't want Radovid dead.

Your choice but:
Click to reveal..
Radovid is a bad guy and a little insane. He needs to die for a couple of reasons not the least of all it makes for a favorable ending. Your only choice is to refuse or participate. I chose to have him killed. There is a couple surprises in the quest as well

Yes, it is quite possible. You help them to save that guy much before they ask you to take part in their final murder mission.
