I've been working with BFG on this failed download and the recommendations is to unblock the 3 bfg files for the download - (client, services and processes)
I've found the "pause file anti virus" under the performance tag in Kaspersky settings which would do the trick presumably. How safe is this if I cancel the setting immediately after the game is installed? confused

You should be fine... if a download would take all day or more, I'd get a little nervous, but the relatively short time it takes for a Big Fish game shouldn't be a problem. Just get your Kaspersky unpaused as soon as it's done!

Yes, these anti-virus programs like Kaspersky and McAfee mostly do a mighty good job in keeping your computer safe, but they can also be mighty annoying in reporting every single 'suspect' application or site.

This has to do, I think, with heuristic detection: finding suspect patterns in programming code that may point to something nasty, even when it's not. I can understand why: if you rely on hard evidence that something is 100% malicious, you'll be too late detecting undiscovered threats.

I recently got a Trojan-Ransom.NSIS.Onion.wxs warning in a Setup.exe file for Journey to the Moon on a Microids DVD I bought!

My solution was to click on the red '1 object not processed' warning line, then choose 'Solve', then 'Add to exceptions'.

I have a Dutch version, so the exact wording may be different. I think it also invloves tweaking the general anti-virus file settings to 'no automatic disinfection or deletion', so just give a warning, then decide on the follow-up action.

Best,

Rich

Thanks, RichAlexis! I don't use either of these, so wasn't sure how the wording was. Good to know more...

Thank you both. I do have a rather slow download speed but the game should get through in under two hours.

My settings are at present set to automatic disinfection or deletion.

Shall I go with the unblocking of files route in settings or should I change my general anti virus settings so it asks me what to do if it finds anything. Or both? I'm just so nervous about this. I'm usually more decisive!

Personally I would go with the general settings where it asks me what to do if it finds anything. If it proves to generate so many notifications that it becomes annoying, they you could try the unblocking of files.

I am surprised that this false positive hasn't been reconciled at this point on the part of Kaspersky. Mystery Case Files: Black Veil is a popular game and my experience has been that anti-virus companies tend to fix this sort of problem rather quickly.

I had this happen once with a Big Fish game and Avast (a false positive), and the problem was fixed in a day or two.

I'm presuming it's a false positive. It must be , musn't it? I haven't been in touch with Kapersky about it.

These days I don't bother trying the demo if it's a series I know I will like the content. This is since Gameboomers helped me spec a new computer, Draclvr being one of the people who helped do this, and I haven't had a single technical problem until this game. I'm on a restricted download quota so it's wasteful to download the demo then have to download the game all over again when I purchase it. But it has landed me in this situation where I've purchased the game already and I don't feel in all conscience I can ask BFG for a refund or another game.

I'll change the general settings so it will ask me about this trojan when I next try a download and I'll allow the program and keep my fingers crossed. I can always change back that setting after. Seems marginally better than pausing the actual anti virus.

Wish me luck!

Yes, I am sure it's a false positive if you are downloading from Big Fish.

Good luck with your download. smile

Well that didn't work. Kaspersky gave me two options - delete or block with no explanation of what these two terms mean and no option to "ignore" the warning and proceed. In fact the Kaspersky interface is ridiculously confusing to negotiate. totally written in geek-speak where titles and subtitles often bear absolutely no resemblance to the meaning of the words in plain English. Sorry - that's a rant, isn't it?

Anyway - BFG are now working with Kaspersky to test the files Kaspersky thought were malicious and hopefully de-list them. so I may yet get to play this game.
Here's hoping!

Well, Meryl. I think you're almost there!

I agree that the Kaspersky interface is far too complex, and it changes every year on top of that - a 'very helpful' feature of most software nowadays - but I think there's a relatively simple solution.

It's a good thing if the object gets blocked, because it means it doesn't get cleaned or removed.
The easiest way would be to right-click on the blocked file, then select 'Scan for viruses'.

Then you get a pop-up screen with the line "Warning: 1 object not disinfected" and a red line below it "1 object not processed". If you click on the red line, you can click a button 'Resolve' in another screen, then choose 'Add to exclusions'.

(I switched the interface language to English, so no guesses from Dutch this time!)

You can also consult the Notification Center screen of your Kaspersky Anti-Virus. There you'll find a warning list with the same options as in the previous paragraph.

I think this should work!

Best,

Rich

For the moment I'm just gong to leave this with BFG.

But I've copied your response RichAlexis so I'll know what to do if this happens with another game. there's no way I would have worked this out for myself.

Can't thank you enough.

Meryl
