When will I ever learn! I guess I keep hoping one of these Edgar Allen Poe games will actually reflect the original story. I was in the mood for a good casual game... sorry I purchased this one.
Let's just say, "it's not the game; it's me!" I was looking for a "dark tales" game that fit the description. Instead, this one has pretty decent graphics and music. But WHY must they insert the insipid "well done" and "good job" comments? Why must there be the horrible cheerful sound effects when you find something or complete a puzzle? It complete ruins the immersion into the game. The voice acting was jarringly dreadful... overdone or happy or just inappropriate. I mean, how many different ways can you pronounce Dupin? And the original Pit and the Pendulum is nowhere to be found...
I guess I'm the curmudgeonly old woman... I keep hoping for something better, but it never happens. That makes it MY fault! I sincerely hope everyone else enjoys this game!

You are both completely correct and I usually do the demo first. But I ignored my own advice and just purchased!! Like I said, totally my fault. I did read reviews at Big Fish and "it's me, not you." So I'm just breaking up with these types of games at Big Fish because they never change.
I have plenty of casuals from them that I'm still enjoying after having for several years!

I disagree -- the problem isn't just you. A lot of us don't like being kicked out of the game by congratulations-for-nothing and other immersion-killing junk. So many Big Fish games are like this now. Most of the games in the "Favorites List" are older ones.

Maybe that's why I go back to some of my older games... there is none of the jarring "congratulations" and "well done" and YAY, ANOTHER ACHIEVEMENT with all kinds of cheerful sound effects. Gads, I hate that stuff and for me, it just ruins the gameplay. I loved the old Mystery Case Files and games like The 13th Skull. I guess some people like this stuff because it does seem popular.
Anyway, I didn't mean to dredge up strong feelings in a thread that is just about a particular game. I'm sure many folks will enjoy this one.

Drac, I also haven't found the previous so-called "Poe's Dark Tales" to have much to do with anything "Poe" except the similar-sounding title on both book and game. They generally are short, way too simple, and have all the old annoyances that most gaming companies are backing off on (like many games now let you turn off all the "Congratulations!" broohaha). It has been a while since I tried one of the Poe games, though, so I did the trial game on this. To me, the game is still too silly to be "Poe-ish" and the voice acting mentioned by others is badly handled, but in this game, the mini-puzzles are much improved. A couple were devilish head-scratches, and that made them great fun. Now, although I don't really like the game, I'm struggling over whether to buy it simply for those puzzles!

Good points, Reenie! I just found the annoyances in the game too much to get past. I was about to scream the next time I heard the cheerful little chimes and saw "good job!" The voice acting was also so dreadful, it was like fingernails on a blackboard for me.
