I think Chief is right about it being The Omega Stone. And deleterman played that game in the last couple of years - I remember him posting about it in the Hints forum. There's also a helicopter taking you places in the game.

It's a first person game.

I had to do a search to be sure as I did not remember.

thanks guys , I checked it out and there is no rail tracks , as I remember you have to switch the track for the gondola to go to the right or left. I think it was left. if it was the not the right way it crashed in to a wall. and the people in the gondola died . yikes what a game.

A mad guess could be "Lighthouse : The Dark being" ??

well I just remember that it has mountains all around and as you look down you see the opening to the mine. you climb down and go over to the opening of the mine. does that ring a bell ?

If you look at the beginning of Chapter Six of the Lighthouse walkthrough by Louis, it shows an entrance at the base of a mountain and inside that mountain you have to drive a cart that runs on rail tracks.

Then once in that, scroll down to the end of the prologue and click on Chapter 6 part 1 to look at the picture there.
That picture could well be the one you are remembering ....

I should also thank Louis & Lion for the splendid Lighthouse "walkthrough" pictures - that enabled me to check if what I thought was there was actually there !!

Lighthouse! Good detective work, and thanks for the reminder of that classic!

The rail tracks are what first made me think of Lighthouse .. And then I realised the flying machine could be the "helicopter" and the monster in the abandoned building could be the "mummy".
So then I went to the walkthrough Louis had made to see if I could find a picture of the volcano entrance - which could be the "cave" entrance - and fortunately found one

Lighthouse was a masterpiece of an Adventure game I always thought !!
[ Although I get stuck on those railroad tracks every time I play it and always have to look for walkthrough directions to make it through ]
