When I was 16 my mother and stepfather bought a night club. I spent a lot of time there cleaning, stocking coolers, making food, playing pool
and eventually pretty much running the place. My stepfather was a very tough man in a 5'7" frame. You wouldn't expect it to look at him, but he was a state champion wrestler, a navy boxing champion, a martial arts instructor and a phenomenal street fighter. Some days we would play chess together. Normally we would stay in the club but sometimes we went next door to a tavern during the lunch hour where we were friends with the owners and my little sister (6) was friends with the owner’s kids. They liked playing together while we played chess.
One day while my stepfather was playing an older gentleman, a very large bearded man walked in and ordered a drink. He was loud, obnoxious and vulgar. The barmaid was the meek owner of the tavern and was noticeably disturbed by the man. After hearing the man swear a time or two, my stepfather asked him nicely to be careful with his language around the women and children. The man apologized and went on with drinking his beer in silence. After some time, he started swearing loudly again. My stepfather asked him to watch what he was saying again and again he apologized and became quiet. But, as fate would have it the man couldn't contain himself. He stood up and spewed out a line of obscenities and went on to say that he "didn't have to listen to that little 4-eyed b*****d either!" My stepfather was wearing his reading glasses. He looked at me and took his glasses off, so I knew what was coming. I took the kids outside and I watched through the curtains as the man quickly learned that he should have been a lot nicer.
