I can get no joy from anyone on the internet so am turning to my good gameboomer friends for advice.
This may be an insoluble problem but here goes.
Just lately, anything that I have tried to download has been answered with— deleted due to a possible virus threat.- i. Have tried numerous, all with the same result.
I have tried turning off my anti virus but the same result.
And now ,of course, I cannot download my anti virus— catch 22.
Before i do anything really drastic, can any wizard of the community help?
Regards—-Peter.

What antivirus do you have?
How is it configured? To most restrictive or to medium settings?
Did your antivirus recently receive an update that may have caused this?

What files are you attempting to download?

It's possible for antivirus restrictions to be set so high that any "unknown" file is considered to be a virus.

It's possible to unintentionally install a browser add-on that restricts downloads and installs along with other "free" software that you previously downloaded.

It's even possible to get a virus that pretends to be an antivirus and blocks all downloads (including antivirus updates).

If you have more than one web browser (for example Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Edge or IE), have you tried using a different web browser to download?

Also check the add-ons in the browser that you're using to make sure there's no unwanted "scanner."

Also check your installed programs list to make sure there's no suspicious program there. If you don't know what a program is, either look it up with a web search or ask about it. Most virus won't appear here, but an unwanted so-called "security" program that installs along with other software can cause problems if you already have an antivirus. Two antivirus running at once is a bad thing.

Jenny has covered all the questions to ask you completely. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say your browser is infected.

I do have one additional question... you say you turned off your anti-virus. You should be able to turn it back on and run a scan immediately. Why would you need to download it?

Thank you both for your helpful advice.
I have only used internet explorer as my browser so I will now try the others.
With regard to my anti virus— like an idiot, I didn’t just turn it off, I uninstalled it.
Forgive me— I will keep you updated. Thanks again— Peter

What operating system are you using? If it's Windows 7 or later, you already have a built-in anti virus program called Defender. Make sure it's activated and then use it to run a scan.

Thanks Draclvr. Yes, I used that and it came up ,no virus.(windows 10)
I tried the other browsers as suggested but still refused all downloads.
Really frustrating so I am now going to resort to system restore.
Will let you know what happens—(it’s been working on this now for about an hour and not finished yet)
Regards-Peter

I hope you followed Jenny's suggestion and made sure all extensions were turned off in your browsers first.

Hopefully the system restore will do the trick. What operating system are you using? Since you said you used IE, I assume it's Windows 7? Just FYIou only have about 3 months to continue using it before Microsoft stops supporting it.

Most antivirus can't be completely uninstalled through Add/Remove Programs.
You have to also run an uninstaller utility that you download from the antivirus program's website. This utility cleans up files and settings that the normal Windows uninstaller leaves behind. So if you didn't use the antivirus' uninstall utility, the uninstalled parts of the antivirus may still be preventing downloads.

To find the uninstaller for your particular antivirus, do a web search for the name of the antivirus and the word "uninstaller." Since you never told us what antivirus you were using we can't find a link to its uninstaller utility for you.

If you are going to switch from your old antivirus to Windows Defender, you need to get rid of any leftover traces of the old antivirus. You also need to update Windows Defender with the latest signatures/definitions before running a scan or it won't be able to detect new virus.

If your old antivirus was McAfee, you are better off using Windows Defender.
McAfee is known for false positives.
Here's a website that tells how to get rid of McAfee
http://www.pchell.com/virus/uninstallmcafee.shtml
This is just an example of what you may need to do to get rid of the last vestiges of an uninstalled antivirus. We have no idea if your old antivirus was McAfee or not.

If the problem with downloading is a problem with bad settings, then a system restore can help.

If you have a virus, then a system restore will not get rid of it.

Just let you know that system restore seemed to work. I scanned with avast and removed some malaware and now downloading is working ok.
Thanks a lot for all your usual advice and patience. Until the next problem, bye for now. Peter.

Well done, Petjo! I would suggest running at least one or two more scans with Avast.
