Hi community

so, after we (me and a friend of mine) have finished Discworld, we would like to continue with the Tex Murphy series.
We have played Tex Murphy 3 and 4 so far ('Under a Killing Moon' was good, 'The Pandora Directive' excellent).
So the original plan was to play 1,2,5,6 in that order. But now I read that 5 is a remake of 1 and so I am wondering
if we are spoiling Tex 5 too much for us when we play Tex 1 first. I know the two games are not 100% identical but
does it lessen the fun very much if we already know the basic plot line and probably even know some 'puzzles'?
Would you rather recommend to play Tex 5 first and then Tex 1? Or is the natural order ok?

I am really interested what the Tex lovers have to say about that.

Hi Mike,

I have played Overseer, Pandora Directive, and Under a Killing Moon, but I have not played Mean Streets (or Martian Memorandum).

I did find some opinions as to your questions through googling, but hopefully some players here will weigh in.

I doubt very much you would be "Spoiling" your experience by playing #1 first, the first game was a Very Old Side scroller type game and I am surprised to hear that #5 was a remake of #1, maybe they took the story concept but 5 and 1 are definitely in a different class. And if I remember right, depending on the speed of your machine, have FUN trying to End game #1, I will stop there because I do not want to spoil it for you and your friend, but let me put it this way, I played this one with a friend and neither one of us could finish it. So Good luck.

I know that GOG has Mean Streets as a digital download - I would assume that version presents no technical problems.

I agree with Marian re: Play the game in Easy mode because of the shooting sequences, we had no technical problems with the original game and it was not the reason why we couldn't finish the game, it was something else, but........ again have fun with it, it is an enjoyable Oldie Goldie game to play, a flashback to the Good Old Days of gaming...

Since you've played Tex #3 (UAKM) and Tex #4 (Pandora) before, I'd recommend continuing with #5 and #6 before going back and playing #1 and #2.

Martian Memorandum (Tex #2) was actually OK, but I didn't care for Tex #1 (Mean Streets) at all and I don't think I ever finished it.

Agree completely. Mean Streets was a chore to get through, with its arcade shooting sequences and flight sim elements. The flight sim thing can be made automatic, but you still have to sit inactive and watch a crude representation of the city below while being taken from one location to another in that flying car on autopilot. Sometimes as long as five minutes if I recall correctly. It becomes almost unbearable towards the end when a lot of different locations are unlocked and you have no idea where to find the hotspot or conversation to move things along.

In Overseer Tex is telling his girlfriend about his adventures in Mean Streets. So the games basically tell the same story. But Overseer has much more modern game mechanics and the flight sim components are gone.

Martian Memorandum is a lot better than Mean Streets, but it does have some annoying dead ends and arcade, sometimes timed, elements.

These are two games I'll never ever replay.:)

And yes, Jenny & frazap, I don't expect too much from Tex 1, I am playing it mostly for the sake of having played
the whole series. From what I read, it's not such a long game, I would probably skip it if it had a play time >3 days.

I have got the game on steam so I hope it runs fine.
I am still worried about what Starcom said., though.

@ Starcom, can you tell me what the problem was WITHOUT revealing solutions to
a puzzle/without anything that would be considered a hint?

Near the end or at the end . Or am I confusing game 1 with game 2, maybe Jenny100 can shed light on this.

I don't know if you're talking about Mean Streets or Martian Memorandum, but computer speed issues shouldn't be a problem with the GOG or Steam versions. They install and play inside a tweaked version of DOSBox, and DOSBox can control the speed the game runs.

Control-F11 will slow the emulation speed
Control-F12 will speed up the emulation speed

So you can adjust the emulation speed on the fly.

Martian Memorandum is one of my favorite games, I've probably played it close to a dozen times. It does have a few tricky elements, but overall it's a great game. I keep my Big Box on display at all times in my collection.

Can't wait for the next release in the series, I've played every one of them.

InlandAZ, I agree with Mad on this one, you Really Really have patience to play this game not only twice but a DOZEN times, WOW, I can say no more.

I am playing a lot these days. Result of Corona crisis, I guess.
So I just finished Tex 1 and yes, of course, compared with today's technical standards, its pretty bad and the
flight and fight scenes suck big time, but overall I actually enjoyed playing the game (during the longer flight scenes I just got up from my
desk and cleaned my apartment, lol) : It was fun getting to know the beginning of the Tex-story-line and I enjoyed interrogating
witnesses and suspects and seeing how the story unfolded. On our personal game grading scale I will give it a B- (A+ being the best up to worst grade D)

I agree though, that for me the replay value of this game is close to zero.

I am going to play Tex 2 next

Ah and by the way, I played it on steam and entering the passwords at the end wasn't easy because of the time limit, but when you memorize
the passwords you don't need to be a super fast typer, it is doable and not that hard. MUCH MORE tight (timewise) is the puzzle before. I found the solution to
the puzzle easily, but wasn't sure if it actually was the solution because execution was REALLY difficult. You really need to have
qucik reflexes which can be to tough for older gamers (I am 46 and have still pretty quick reaction times because of my c64 childhood, I guess)

Interesting information about these games. I have yet to play them.

You should ask me how many times I've played through the Final Fantasy games Those and the Kyrandia series. Installed DOSBOX on my tablet and had a great time re-playing a bunch of the old classics recently.

Loved the Fireberry maze in Kyrandia Book 1.

I've never played any Final Fantasy games, InlandAZ, but I've played the Kyrandia games many times.

AND I sorted the Fireberry Maze - after several attempts, of course

The first Kyrandia is still my favourite of the three

Another series I have yet to play. Both of these series have been downloaded on my Windows 7 computer, ready and waiting - and waiting
