For the first time in my gaming history, I find myself playing a game that cannot be properly controlled using the keyboard. I'm looking for a controller, but I'm not interested in pre-set buttons and a lot of bells and whistles (because I'd have no idea how to use them, for a start). I just need a controller that will permit fluid movement instead of requiring the use of the WASD keys for directional aiming. Is it even possible to integrate a controller with the keyboard, or is it one or the other? Shows you how little I know about this! Any suggestions would be welcome and cost is not an issue.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I would like to hear more too. I finally quit playing Dragon Age Origins for the same reason.

I'll be watching this too. I've been using my old Logitech Rumble Pad 2 (cordless) but they don't support it any longer... I did get them to send me drivers that would make it work with my windows 10. I love it. I can program 12 keys...I hope this doesn't break. I don't know about the others but this is easy to setup.. the game usually have in the options your control area.. you just click on the button you want lets say.. jump to do... etc.. I am playing a game now that I could not if I wasn't using this. I am looking at Razer they seem to have some nice ones.

Ideally you could visit a game shop and hold the prospective gamepad/joystick in your hands to see if it fits your hands or not. You don't want one that feels too large or too small. One of the gamepads I bought for playing Dreamfall (2006) was a Saitek gamepad that was too large for my dinky little hands. For the first time in my gaming history, I find myself playing a game that cannot be properly controlled using the keyboard. I had that problem with Dreamfall (2006). The buttons and keyboard keys weren't the problem. The problem was the way the character moved. I have problems with camera-relative movement when using a keyboard. I'm looking for a controller, but I'm not interested in pre-set buttons and a lot of bells and whistles (because I'd have no idea how to use them, for a start). I just need a controller that will permit fluid movement instead of requiring the use of the WASD keys for directional aiming. I think your game will allow programming. There is also software like joytokey that allows you to program your gamepad to emulate a keyboard -- https://joytokey.net/en/posts/category/faq/Is it even possible to integrate a controller with the keyboard, or is it one or the other? I think using both is the default setting. Certainly it was with Dreamfall. I needed keyboard/mouse for the dexterity to do the "puzzles" and the game automatically switched back from gamepad to keyboard/mouse control when I tried to use the keyboard or mouse instead of the gamepad. Shows you how little I know about this! Any suggestions would be welcome and cost is not an issue. Expect to pay about $20 for a decent gamepad. I'd suggest buying two and using the one you like best. Besides the size, another thing to consider is how sweaty (and slippery) the gamepad gets while you use it -- an issue I had had with Playstation and XBox controllers -- they'd get all slippery and end up on the floor. So one of the controllers I bought had a little fan inside to cool off your hands and keep them from getting sweaty. I can't find the gamepads I bought at Amazon anymore, but I found this eBay auction https://www.ebay.com/itm/PS2-Nyko-A...1?hash=item3b4e4de08f:g:epgAAOSw6atfQSkqIt is made by Nyko and called Air Flo Ex fan-cooled controller. Mine is not wireless. It has a USB cable. I may have bought it at a local GameStop and not at Amazon. https://web.archive.org/web/20050203003345/www.nyko.com/nyko/products/?i=11I can't find the Saitek brand controller I bought either. Unlike the Nyko, it did not have a fan inside. It did have provision not to get sweaty and slippery though. The handles were not solid plastic, but were a grid made of rubbery stuff that allowed ventilation.

Thanks for the information, Jenny. I'll take that into consideration when I'm looking. My purchase will have to be online as we've got nothing here.

I haven't been able to find the model number on the Saitek controller that I bought. I don't know where that controller went. Neither the Saitek nor the Nyko controller that I bought had drivers for XP or 2000, which were what I was using at the time. So I'd have been stuck with using the joytokey software if they hadn't worked out of the box. Anyway, that's something else to look for if you're checking them out in a local shop -- make sure there are drivers/software for your version of Windows. If the package doesn't include a CD or DVD with drivers, check the website of the manufacturer of the gamepad.
If you don' thave a local GameStop, check your local WalMart (or whatever other shop you have that may might have supplies for computer games).

Ah, yes, Walmart. We do have a Walmart superstore here. I could have a look in there, I suppose. London Drugs might have one or two as well. I've bought peripherals in there before (the guys in there are always weirded out by an older woman looking for gaming supplies. Very amusing).
EIDT: I was just looking on Amazon. They have tons of them but the ones that are the most interesting are either out of stock or don't work on in 10 (which seems very odd).
What a confusing purchase this will be. I don't want to buy something that's too much for me but the most recommended simple joysticks seem hard to come by.
I couldn't find anything on the Razer site. They have gaming mice, but not joysticks.

EDIT: I was just looking on Amazon. They have tons of them but the ones that are the most interesting are either out of stock or don't work on in 10 (which seems very odd). They probably will work with Windows 10, though they may not include drivers for Win10 in the box. Check the manufacturer's website for drivers you can download. What a confusing purchase this will be. I don't want to buy something that's too much for me but the most recommended simple joysticks seem hard to come by. Don't worry about it being "too much for you." Extra options are just extra options. You don't have to use them. Which one(s) look(s) good to you? Which one(s) look(s) like "too much?" I couldn't find anything on the Razer site. They have gaming mice, but not joysticks.
They had some sort of keypad with lighting. https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Tartar...ha-Membrane/dp/B07754PYFK/qid=1600570417https://www.razer.com/gaming-mice/razer-naga-pro/RZ01-03420100-R3U1https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Tartarus-Gaming-Keypad-Analog-Optical/dp/B08CR2QX93/qid=1600571469&s=electronics&sprefix=razer+tartarus%2Celectronics%2C186 https://support.razer.com/gaming-ke...bXBhcmUgdG8gdGhlIFJhemVyIFRhcnRhcnVzPw==

'll check those out. That Razer mouse doesn't seem to have a joystick, though. Maybe I'm just not understanding what it does.

I guess I'm just not understanding how those controllers specifically work. I'm just looking for a way to navigate 360 degrees instead of just using the A and D keys to change direction. I had a joystick-type control in mind.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I might be wrong because I'm not sure either. But I think this one for instance is controlled by rolling that button on the right with your thumb. Sort of like a joystick, but you don't have to take your fingers off the controls maybe. Look at some of the other pictures on the page of it being used and maybe it will make sense.

Thanks, I will have a closer look. I like that it's fairly small. My laptop is in a little niche in my living room and a huge joystick would look a bit out of place.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Maybe we need to be sure it is PC compatible. I saw one review that said it wasn't unless you also have an xbox.

Hi, I'm back,,,, let me tell you about my controller... the knob on the left lets me go forward, left, right, and back. The knob on the right gives me the 360 degree angle.. my view can look all around... the one that looks round but like a cross or X on the left I have programed to do different things... the buttons on the right X-A-- and so forth... on mine are numbers and I program them to do what the game wants... 1=spacebar or attack, 2= enter or jump...3 right mouse... cancel, 4 hit use or teleport... in the front of the controller are 2 on each side.. these are my power options in the game... I have 2 in the middle which are 9= escape, 10= inventory or map .... this is for the game Psychonauts... for every game you would program them according to the game.... Questions??
Edit
i have a question into Razer.. about the pc issue... but one other thing I noticed was..
Detachable 3 m / 10 ft lightweight braided fiber cable with Micro-USB connector.
This is expensive, perhaps a cheapie one to make sure this is what you want and like.

I'm thinking the same thing, hagatha. Was looking at this one from Logitech... might be a good option to try to see if it's what you need. $25 or $50 is better than $100! Logitech Game Controllers

Getting a cheaper one as a tryout might be a good idea. EDIT: I seem to be having no luck on the Logitech site. It keeps rejecting my shipping address. It's never simple.
