Whoa! Now that looks like fun! I hope it's as good as it looks, but given that it's CD Projekt Red, it probably will be.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

The Washington Post ran a review of the game today, and things are looking really positive, save for some bugs, which are pretty much expected in a game of this size and scope. I think I'll wait for a bit before getting into it -- let the bugs get worked out first.

Yeah, same here. I was stoked to jump into pre-ordering the collector's version until I saw that it was nearly $300! scared

So, I'll wait too. $60 is a fairly hefty price, considering how many pre-orders they already have. I wonder what the cost was to make the game? I'll have to look into that.

My son got the game through GOG as a birthday present a couple of weeks ago. He won't be able to play until Thursday/Friday, but I am eager to hear what he has to say about it.

I read an in-depth review of the performance of the game and the hardware that will be required at Tom's Hardware. I'm thinking I'm going to let this one stew for awhile before I get it!

I'll get it on Stadia first, so disk space and patches/updates are not relevant. I may buy it in the next week but yes will probably wait a little while for some of these much reported bugs to be smoothed out. At a later date I'll probably re-buy it on Steam so I can play it through GeForce Now (similar conditions to Stadia) but also download it when I have a computer and graphics card that can handle it. Looking forward to it very much, but also with a little cautious optimism. I am no big fan of Witcher 3 so CDPR haven't earned "they are god" status from me personally. They haven't made an FPS before so there's potential to say they're still learning, being first timers in that genre. But someone compared Cyberpunk to Deus Ex and that IS high praise in my book...I am quite happy for just more of that kind of gameplay, style, etc.

I'm crossing my fingers Night City is a place you can just drop in and inhabit for a while not caring much for quests and stuff (ala Fallout 4) but that's more for personal longevity out of a purchase than a determining factor of overall enjoyment. So, excited - definitely going to OWN it in some capacity very soon but may hold off PLAYING until some of the more common bugs are smoothened out - that said I expect the fixes will come thick and fast so it may only need 7-10 days to rectify a lot of what reviews are commenting on currently. I can fully appreciate open world FPS having a bunch of those in the early days, there are so many different routes a person can take, it's only when the general public get their hands on it that some of those millions of possibilities start to get covered fully and fixed. I very much intend to get started in the world of Cyberpunk before Xmas!!

All that said, the majority of reviews look positive which is great. Well ok, enjoy!

This game is getting under my skin, and now I must have it. Aside from Keanu Reeves voicing or basically being a main character, Elon Musk's wife Grimes, is doing the voice for the Night City celebrity character Lizzy Wizzy. Plus she's done some of the music for the soundtrack, which makes sense given her chosen genres. Rumor has it the Elon will also eventually make an appearance in the game. praise

I don't suppose there's going to be much quiet exploration in this game...

I'm eager to see what they will do as a follow-up to Witcher 3, which I think is an all-time great game. I went into Witcher 3 with ultra-high expectations, like I do now with Cyberpunk 2077. I kept thinking that Witcher 3 had better be great on every front, and I kept trying to find things that were wrong with it as I was playing it. But at the end I had to conclude that this was one of the greatest games ever. I wouldn't be surprised if CP2077 impressed us again similarly. This company has the mojo right now. It's like in Bethesda's heydey, when it seemingly could do no wrong and made one classic after another: Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, etc.

Witcher 3 is my favourite RPG to date -- they did pretty much everything right in that one. Hopefully this one will meet those same standards.

According to the powers that be over at CDPR they won't be doing just a "Witcher 4" . They want to break the Witcher theme out into broader horizons apparently, and doing a follow-up to Witcher 3 would feel too comfortable. In looking at the success of the Elder Scrolls, I'm not sure if that's a good move or not.

As far as them doing no wrong, well...at least their CEO Adam Kicinski is personally apologizing to console folks who bought the game and are offering refunds to those that bought it for Xbox-One and Playstation 4 due to the amount of performance issues that have appeared. It happens to the best of companies; Cyberpunk was an insane undertaking and they faced a lot of hurdles, from both political and business perspectives. I am sort of surprised that they didn't delay the console releases given that they were aware of the issues according to several articles: CDPR Admits it ignored the signals of Cyberpunk 2077's console issues

It looks like they might have some loyalty/money issues going as well since the head writer for CP 2077 just left to join Blizzard. It's a hard industry, really dog eat dog now-a-days. Too bad really.

My son has put in about 30 hours on Cyberpunk for the PC. He has had maybe three random inconsequential visual glitches and otherwise the game has been running very well. He loves the game so far.

Cyberpunk 2077 uses adventure game mechanics in one aspect. There is something in the game called "braindance," which is a video recording that lets you "get inside" and freely navigate the environment depicted in the video in order to look for clues -- visual clues, audio clues, and even temperature clues (with your heat sensor). You can rewind, pause, or fast forward through the recording at will to look at everything at all angles and times. It is a fun little diversion that breaks the usual monotony of RPGs: looting, shooting, grinding, bartering, inventory managing, etc.

I think I jinxed them. The moment I said they could do no wrong, they had one of the most botched releases in recent memory. They can always fix the game, but they can never undo a ruined first impression.

I think we gamers also set our expectations far too high. A game like Cyberpunk is a massive endeavour and it's inevitable that there will be glitches, considering all the different computer systems people will be playing on, not to mention the other platforms. I'm pretty forgiving if the game ends up being worth playing after being patched. The only unforgivable sin in my books is a game that's just not fun after all's said and done.

I'm happy to wait for the patches to fix things up.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

The game also has 3 life paths, even though they are probably only slightly different in each case (different intro and some unique dialogue choices) but for me at least, I am playing one of them now and that leaves me with 2 more to try in the future when the game is "more patched" etc. Hell, Fallout 4 has 4 unique paths (minutemen, brotherhood, railroad and institute) and after 5 years I've done 3 of them and still have one left to play fully, and I've seen the main story a bunch of times now and still happy to play through it. So I imagine Cyberpunk will be similar... it won't be too much of a chore to play the main story a few times over the coming years.

The side missions, indicated by a ! in a circle, I think, have some variety and are where I think you find the majority of "exploration" (even though it's quite light). They aren't explained until you reach/start them so you never know what you're going to get which is quite fun! The game is littered with overly verbose "shards" (like PDA notes) so there's plenty to read if you like that sort of thing. Though I find it a bit annoying that it pauses all music and you just hear a dull looping machine sound when you read them (or use any of the inventory menus etc).

I've only experienced a few minor glitches myself (on Stadia), 2 crashes (which just needed a re-load, 10 seconds effort) and one side mission I couldn't complete cos the enemy ended up on a glass roof I couldn't reach (and had to loot them, to complete it, I think). So for me it hasn't been "riddled" with bugs or anything. It has been 95% playable and the main missions and side quests are all good content.

The world itself looks great but it is a bit dead and lifeless. Cars can't react to obstructions, NPC AI is stupid (basic, let's say, because being basic isn't a bug, it's just not very fleshed out). I wouldn't say anything is missing but certainly the "intelligence" part of "AI" is lacking. Though I'm not entirely sure what improving that is going to do to enhance the experience. RDR2 NPCs and vehicles are smarter but even they, after time, become predictable.

Braindance is okay but it is incredibly basic. You don't need to do anything for the clues to emerge, and once they have, you just look around a very small area to see what is highlighted. But that's not to say it's bad, I certainly don't want to be in braindance mode for extended periods of time. But if the question is "what are the adventure game mechanics" then whatever they are I would tag the word "lite" on the end, adventure-lite mechanics. Mind you, they are even lighter in Fallout 4 (there is no detective mode in that game, for example) so Cyberpunk probably does more in that department. It's more than RDR2's Eagle eye also. But Braindances are quite infrequent, or, maybe I have loads of them in my inventory somewhere but haven't used them...!

Overall I'm happy with it. I play a few missions a day and still feel excited to go back into that world and do more. There is no secondary layer like Fallout 4's settlement system which is a bit of a shame, and there doesn't seem to be any companions either (outside of them joining you in their related quest). So its main quest or side quests on your own and that's your lot, really. This does give it the feeling of, well, the actual situation - that this is the first FPS RPG CDPR have made so they haven't necessarily taken the genre or gameplay of this nature forward, but they have covered the basics competently and like Witcher 3 there are some real vibes and feels in the quests/side quests which I guess in a way, is what they do best.

Last night as I played, and my level, stats, equipment etc is now better than "start of game" period, I really felt the Deus Ex vibe, hacking, stealthing. The world around me is less of a threat now and for me personally more enjoyable to interact with. I read some shards but as I say I don't like being plunged into paused sound/music, its an immersion breaker for me. But from day 1 the deep sci-fi/cyberpunk feeling was there without a doubt, and now on day 10 or such I am still looking forward to whatever missions I may be tasked with. Glitches or no, its an FPS sci-fi game that provides what a fan of that might want to a good degree. I do wonder if it can become or will be more than it is today (beyond just being fixed up) but even if not, it's still a worthwhile trip into a cyberpunk world.

Maybe I'm just trying to justify my purchase? Maybe. But then, maybe all the negative news is coming out of the console gaming sector and I'm not a console gamer, so don't expect me to tow the line on that. It's fine. At least, when you compare it to sci-fi/cyberpunk games/adventure games of the past (see the documentaries below) then it does fit like a glove...and all the bemoaning of bugs and irate console normies can't really take that away wink

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sttm8Q9rOdQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VoX3vr6CCM

Edit: One other mention, as I found it a good point in a video, is that there is not so much emergent gameplay. Understandably this may not really be something a lot of people are looking for (it rarely exists in linear games, like point n clicks often are), but I think it is certainly a "power play" from an RPG game in the big leagues and almost pivotal to the first-person perspective experience. It's not here in the single-player, that I can tell, but that may change with multiplayer, though I can't see how the world and its AI in its current state could really contribute to that. Emergent gameplay is quite sci-fi/cyberpunk concept in itself lol but it's pretty [blip] cool when it exists.

m0ds, I don't think you are trying to justify your purchase. My son tells me that the PC version of this game is great and remarkably bug-free on his machine, unlike Assassin's Creed: Valhalla which was frequently crashing to desktop among other problems. (He liked Valhalla, but cannot believe that Ubisoft released the game in that disgraceful state). He is really enjoying Cyberpunk and will be sorry to see it end, and he's taking his time with it.

Hey m0ds, thanks for the great summary!

Nice to hear it's working well on Stadia, since that seems to be a good platform for giving games a trial go. I'm mostly a PC gamer myself, but do dabble in Xbox stuff now and again. Your description of the Cyberpunk world was awesome, and better sets my expectations for the game thumbsup

And they are starting to release the patches. This article at Tom's Hardware says the performance on consoles has been lackluster.

One thing I find slightly disconcerting in CP2077 is that a skill's level cannot exceed its governing attribute's level. For instance, one of the skills is "handgun," and it is governed by the "reflex" attribute. You get handgun XP every time you deal damage with a handgun. But once your handgun skill reaches level N, you won't get any more handgun XP unless your reflex attribute is N+1 or more. If not, you will either use your handgun with no XP, or wait till your character levels up to gain an attribute point, and put that point into the reflex attribute, before you can get handgun XP again. Does this sound like a great setup to you? I know it's normal to have some sort of "level cap" for skills, but the cap is usually for obtaining that skill. Here, you are capped WHILE using that skill. In most other RPGs the attributes don't limit the underlying skills like that. In Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, your bartering skill can be 40 even when its governing attribute, personality, is at 30 or lower. In Fallout 3, you can upgrade a perk as many times as you want without upgrading any of the SPECIAL attributes.
