Mikael -

The journal tells me to "probe the skate hall again" (re: the fire hydrant)

I am underneath the bridge, at the far end. Have found:
the device with buttons, a note apparently from Alvin, some junk (glove, pizza box) and a message 'we will find you'

Can't find an exit at this end of the bridge, and can't return to the other side of the river where I know there is an exit.

@Marian - we probably should be having this discussion under the Hints and Help forum; but it just happened here. Sorry.

Well, I encountered something today that I'm not sure I've ever come across in a Carol Reed game. I saw a clue and solved a puzzle afterwards but solved the puzzle by accident, not knowing how I really solved it. So, I went back into the prior save 3 or 4 times until I solved the puzzle again in one try and studied the steps taken to solve it, but still don't know why those steps solved it. duh I don't want to post more about it because I don't want to spoil anything for anybody else.

Hi oldbroad, I moved your post over to this Hints thread. This way, maybe someone who has played the game will be able to explain the steps of this particular puzzle. As long as spoiler tags are used it shouldn't be a problem to talk about the solution.

Hi Oldbroad! Though I’m not exactly sure of what puzzle you’re referring to, solving a puzzle by chance, or brute-force (trying every possible combination) is entirely possible. I remember doing it myself once in Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy, when I had no idea of how to interpret the clues. It isn’t possible to solve any of the puzzles in the game before the clues have been revealed though (even by chance), since that would break up the chronology. If you want to find out exactly what the clues were, I suggest that you start from a saved game, and look constantly in the journal. All the steps that have to be taken in the game appear in the journal.

Mikael, I have solved many a puzzle with brute-force but in your games, I think I've always understood the reasoning of the solution. I don't want to look in the journal right now. Maybe after I finish the game I'll look into it some more.

We have a new written walkthrough posted for this game - have you looked at it yet? You can find it here. See if that helps.

If you are still stuck and can't find the sign, I suggest you check out the video walkthrough here. I see another video walkthrough too, but it looks like it is still a work in progress.

I can't remember the details, so I would check out the video walkthrough that I linked to above; that way, you will have a visual.

I will repeat the link here.
