I decided to fire up this game today and take a first look at it.

So far it's reminding me of Deux Ex, gameplay-wise, which isn't a bad thing . The visual aesthetic is Deux Ex/Blade Runner-esque.

After a very brief origin-story sequence, I've been ousted, through a dastardly attack of corporate espionage, from my cushy, high-ranking executive job and am now living on the mean streets with what might be a band of miscreants (I'm not sure yet; somebody is taking me through a training course, though I have no idea who she is. Disturbingly, she knows me).

The menus and action keys are not all that intuitive, and it'll take a while for me to internalize the basic moves. Hopefully that won't take too long.

The game's running perfectly on my laptop. Graphics are good.

So far, so good.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Good to hear your initial thoughts on the game. My son played it and had a great time with it.

My first real criticism is that parts of the tutorial are almost incomprehensible and I had to exit the game and look for help elsewhere. Several times I found myself trying to follow the instructions and being left completely at a loss. You really do need to go through the tutorial, though.

The game launches you into action immediately. No sooner are you out of the tutorial, when you find yourself in your car with your pal Jackie, and you are apparently on a rescue mission -- no information on who gave you the mission, though.

The mission itself is pretty straightforward -- sneak in, do as many silent takedowns as you can, and delete the rest with you weapon; my automatic rifle inexplicably ended up in my hands even though I have no idea how it got there and wasn't even aware that I had one. I don't know how the inventory works so I'll load up at the start of the mission and take cruise through the menus to see what's what.

I'm looking forward to seeing how levelling up is handled. I created a character that was built for stealth over brawn. We'll see how that plays out.

-----------------------------

So, I've leveled up, and you get one attribute point and one perk point. There are five attributes -- I can't remember all their names but the fall into general categories like stamina, strength, intelligence, etc., though each one also has a list of other abilities that increase with each attribute. I'm focusing on stealth so I picked the perk that allows me to move 20% faster when crouched.

Menus are pretty much the usual, it turns out. I've got some cool gear, including, it turns out, a Wolf jacket, a nod to Witcher 3. Hey, what can I say? It looks cool on me.

I will keep that in mind as I often skip a tutorial!

You really won't be able to skip this tutorial, I don't think.

This game is pitching a LOT of information all at once. I'm finding the "tech" aspects of the game very hard to keep up with. Although the keyboard commands are on-screen, you still have to figure out how and when to use them much of the time. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but it's a lot to learn all at once.

Anyway, time to put it to bed because the latest sequence got away from me and I have to try again.

Bottom line for me is that there's a learning curve on this one. It isn't like your basic Bethesda sandbox where you can pick things up intuitively. It'll be a while before the actions become automatic for me.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

So here's the deal so far: It looks like a lot of fun, but it has a MASSIVE learning curve.

Learning the menus and commands takes time and can be very frustrating.

I was just starting to get the hang of things; do some exploring, hack a terminal for some cash, take out a bunch of random gang members and chuck them in a garbage bin just because I can -- you know, the usual day-to-day stuff -- when I ran into yet another feature of the game that takes many, many re-loads and a lot of swearing to learn. Right now I'm trying my hand at hacking a datachip. The video walkhroughs make it seem straightforward, but it really isn't.

The game itself is really quite beautiful and the animations are superb. I've already got several quests in addition to the main quest, and have levelled up a few times. I ditched my car early on because the controls are dreadful (apparently some cars handle better than others), and am enjoying running around the city. It's great. I'm just having a lot of trouble with the controls and learning the ropes.

EDIT: Starting to enjoy many aspects of the game but the hacking just has me stumped. I've been through tutorial after tutorial and I think I've got it, and then I really don't. Since I've already put all of my available perk points into Hacking, I'd better work it out. I've honestly never had so much trouble working something out in a game. I just spent two hours on a hack and still haven't got it to work.

EDIT: Yahoo! I finally figured out the hacking. It is most definitely not well explained in the game, however once you understand it, it's simple. I found a How-To that really explained it well, after searching for hours.

Here's my verdict so far:

Loads of quests;

Lots of sneaking and thieving opportunities and also some decent opportunities for casual mayhem;

Decent-looking skill progression trees;

Fantastic game world to explore freely;

Great graphics;

Good voice acting.

It's early days yet, but now that I have a better handle on the game mechanics and controls, I'm having a blast. As to whether the game has a deep story line, that remains to be seen.

So far I've only run into one glitch, where I sank into the ground. A reload took care of it. Otherwise the game seems very stable, with no crashes.

My Razer Blade is handling the game beautifully. I'm running on High and Ultra and getting around 67 FPS with no stuttering.

Alright, so here's the deal.

I am seriously loving this game.

It has more similarities with Witcher 3 than I had expected. Yes, it's an urban setting, but the way the map works and the way quests are given are remarkably familiar and once I realized that I settled in comfortably. It isn't so very different after all.

The city map is far bigger than it looks at first. Areas open up after certain quests. As you head towards the target of your latest quest, often given via phone call from various fixers you meet along the way, the map starts to show other targets in the same way that Witcher 3 did, indicating the difficulty rating compared to your level (lots of Skulls on my map at the moment).

Some of the quests are simply things you stumble upon as you travel around -- a police call, a mugging, a point of interest to check out.

The city itself actually does feel quite real in the sense of being populated. The city is full of people, stores, vendors, and so on. A lot of side quests are of the basic go do this/get this type, just as in Witcher 3. They're worth doing of course, for the experience and loot.

You can buy vehicles and drive around the city, but as I said above in my earlier post, the driving is pretty difficult on PC and in any case, I'm getting far more out of the game by running everywhere.

I've reached the point where Keanu shows up. I'm not going to give anything away, but it's a decent surprise from a storytelling perspective and the sequence that led up to his appearance was a lot of fun.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it enough that I'll be playing it through and maybe even starting a new character for a second game now that I know the ropes and can see how the various builds progress.

This makes me happy to read this! And even better news that your Razor Blade is rocking the game on high settings.

There are multiple ways to complete quests, too. You can sometimes talk your way out of fighting. You can simply start shooting, or you can sneak and hack, reminding me of Deus Ex.

I created a stealth/hacker character and although I haven't been able to complete a no-takedown mission, stealth is still a useful skill. I just ran through a quest -- taking out a gang leader who makes snuff movies -- and went in the side door, fought my way up the several levels, and finished the quest in a blaze of gory glory. Then I reloaded the quest and found a back entrance up a staircase in the back alley and completed the quest by stealth with my silenced pistol from the building next door. The target was standing in a window on the second floor. No muss, no fuss, nobody ever knew.

I know there's been a lot of ongoing controversy about the game's performance on consoles, and justifiably so it seems, but the game itself -- the concept and the execution -- are great. It's really too bad it's been damaged by all of the controversy. I'm playing with all of the patches, of course. The game is stable -- not a single crash -- and I've still only come across one weird video glitch.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I've finshed the game, and found stealth and hacking the easiest skills to level up. You can dump enemies' bodies into dumpsters even AFTER a fight, and that gives you massive XP for stealth, about 100XP per body. There are numerous breaching and quickhacking opportunities because many objects and enemies are hackable and/or breachable. Cameras even let you earn XP twice: breach it to turn it off, and go near it to turn it off again with engineering skill.

I rate this game 4/5, as there are some disappointing aspects even if you disregard all the bugs. Storytelling isn't as good as in Witcher 3, and the open-world isn't as well-designed as in, say, Grand Theft Auto 5, the game most compared to Cyberpunk 2077. Memorable quests are few and far between. The one about crucifixation was one of few quests I found memorable.

As we have heard, due to the rushed schedule, features had to be cut from CP2077. Whenever I saw anything that seemed to prematurely end, I wondered if content had been cut. In a key mission with Judy, I went scuba-diving with her; but that mission was over too soon, and I wondered if it was supposed to be (much) bigger. The braindance missions were all very easy and, again, all very small and short. And what happened to T-Bug at the end exactly? That wasn't adequately explained -- probably some crucial cut scenes were cut as well.

Smart guns are very powerful in this game (a good thing, I guess), and no player should be without one. It makes combat much easier even at high difficulty.

My son played this game when it was released and in many hours of playing only had a couple of crashes to the desktop.

GamingPhreak,

I feel as though I've barely scratched the surface of this game. I'm just wandering around agog at the cityscape and doing the mini-quests that come up as you get close, like the muggings. The game world is a remarkable achievement, right down to the fine details like the Walk/Don't Walk signals actually working the way they would in the real world.

There's so much to do and so much to explore. At one point I wandered into an enclosed area that was very clearly marked with a skull, way over to the right of the map, and found myself surrounded by mechs. I was in there for about four hours with my stupid little silenced pistol at level 11 and still managed to take out the whole area, blow up every vehicle, kill the giant military combat 'bot in the shed, and get the lousy reward. It was a blast.

One aspect of the game I find vastly amusing for some silly reason is the ease with which things like the lamp posts lining the roads come down. Smack into them with a vehicle, and down they go, into the street. I'm fine, the bike is fine, but the pole is done for. I don't mean to hit them, of course grin , but I'm so bad at driving, even with a motorcycle, that it happens rather a lot.

I haven't got into the story deeply enough yet since I'm really just wandering around leveling up and selling stuff to buy cyber upgrades. The only main character's story I've completed is my friend Jackie.

I'll keep in mind your comments about the smart guns -- I've got a smart pistol and since I seem to heading for the Stealth/Handgun specialties, I'll hang onto it for now.

I haven't run into any bugs yet, fingers crossed.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

You must have seen the bug that makes you unable to pick up items. Right outside V's apartment there is a piece of paper on the floor that is marked as loot but can't be picked up. There are full of instances like this throughout the game. I just checked the latest version 1.12 of the game and this bug is still there.

Yes, I have encountered that glitch for some random loot, but there's so much loot it's hardly important and I haven't run across it for anything really good. I guess I'm not too worried about random bits of paper and used coffee cups. The sheer volume of stuff you can pick up is overwhelming. It's literally everywhere you look.

I meant I haven't run into any major game-breaking or quest-breaking bugs yet. Again, fingers crossed.

Cheers.

this game is not as bad as the internet would tell you. its ultimately going to be compared to the witcher 3 forever which is a tall order. living up to that was going to be pretty hard to do. ive played the whole game now after the patches and its pretty great. still better than most games out there. its not TW3 but not many things are.

I agree with everything you said here. Witcher 3 was always going to be impossible to catch, but Cyberpunk is very good indeed, and deserves more praise than it's been getting.

I've run into a few graphical glitches that are very minor, and I'm at level 22 now. Everywhere I explore there's more to do. The City itself is massive and so highly detailed it's tough to get bored. Unless you've played the game you can't have any idea of just what a major undertaking this must have been, just to create the City itself, never mind the seemingly never-ending quests and places to explore.

I've become quite used to travelling by motorcycle now, though I've had a few fender benders and one crash that was so bad I went arse over teakettle and my bike exploded...and about 10 seconds later a replacement showed up beside me and my bank account was automatically docked the amount of my insurance deductible for the replacement. lol If only it was that easy in real life.

Anyway, I'm enjoying this immensely.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I spent the morning exploring a massive, abandoned, multi-story shopping mall and repairing (and riding on) a huge roller-coaster ride with Johnnie/Keanu, who lives in my head. He pops out every now and then to make suggestions and/or snarky comments.

Hi there, Andyrson, and welcome to Gameboomers!

Cyberpunk is a lot of fun, but yes, it does have some pretty high requirements to run. It's taken me a while to work out which Perks are the best for my build, but my character is now pretty powerful at level 30 -- the highest level is 50 and I've barely scratched the Main Quest.

So which games are you currently playing right now?

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Okay, so I'm now at level 40 and still really having a blast. I've been working on the Main Quest a bit, but I don't want to get too far ahead so I'm doing as many side quests as I can. Just running around the city picks up hundreds of mini-quests for the police, and you never know when some innocuous-looking map marker will turn into a long quest.

I'm so impressed with the way the traffic flow works in this game. Cars stop at traffic lights, people cut each other off and end up honking at swearing at each other, the pedestrian crosswalk lights work properly, and you really need to be careful when you're jaywalking because you can actually get squashed. There's the odd time when a car stops for no apparent reason, though, which results in a jam, so I've stuck with riding a bike since you can just blast around them.

The city is HUGE, and there's a large rural area around it, too, which also has numerous points of interest.

My character has stayed with the sneak/cyber theme and it's loads of fun. Given how interesting this build is, I can't imagine playing anything else. You can take out a whole building full of enemies without touching them or killing them using hacks. Way more fun than coshing them on head or taking them down by force.

Anyway, I do recommend this on PC if you can meet the specs. I'm 120 hours in and I think I may only be about half way through the main story line.

Oh, and Keanu Reeves really IS part of the game, all the way through.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.
