Hi all,
as some of you might now, me and my buddy are big myst-games fans and played many, many of them. For some reason we skipped Uru, though and we decided to play it this year. If I understand it correctly Uru - Complete Chroncile contains the main game (Ages Beyond Myst) plus the two expansions. So my question is how these three games are integrated into each other in one game installation? What I mean is that we would like to explore/solve the game in the order of the three component's releases. So we would like to play the content/ages of 'Uru Ages Beyond Myst) first, solve everything as if the only had installed this component and then move on to the first expansion pack. Is that even possible? Is it obvious (maybe with googling the name of the ages) what part of the game belongs to which component? Or is there an overlap in content? Is it like the main game had three ages A,B,C and when the first extension was released and one would install it one would have ages D,E added with NOTHING being changed in the ages A,B,C of the main game? Or does e.g the first extension modify the already existing ages/environment of the main game's ages in some way, so that it is not possible to play the game as if only Uru: Ages Beyond Myst was installed?
Related to these questions I am also wondering about the ending. When only the main game existed, I would assume when you solved all puzzles, there would be some end sequence at the end of the game as it typically is the case in an adventure game. So how does this has been implemented here. Lets say you solved 100% of the main game part - does the game show some end game sequence but then the game simply does not shut down but you can still walk around and explore the other content, displaying some sequence again when you solved everything from lets say the first expansion? Or was the end sequence of the main game cut from the game and there is only one end game sequence if you have solved everything of ALL components?

I hope I explained myself good enough and you know what I mean. Would be great to get some feedback.
You might be wondering why we care about that,, of course one could also consider Complete Chronicles as one game to be played and don' t think about it, but for some reason I would like to know. I would prefer it to be able to play Ages Beyond Myst as it originally was when it was first released and I am wondering if I can do that when installing Complete Chronicles or whether I have to buy Ages Beyond Myst on CD and install it without the expansions in order to do that.

Regards
Mike

PS: Sorry for the long post, btw smile

Aha...You are playing what is still my favorite game of all time (And I am so old that "All time" goes back a ways.) The simple answer is that URU: The Complete Chronicles will provide you with the complete (All three sections} with all the puzzles, in the proper order. If you load it or download it you will get the entire URU experience. The confusion is that the the last two games were published later and separately after URU originally came out. URU was supposed to be an online game, then named "D'ni Live" wherein all the players could go onlline and meet and interact with each other, but at the time it didn't work out that way. Since many of us has paid a LOT of extra money for URU and the online portion of the game, the producers dreamed up two more expansion packs [To Dn'i and The Path of the Shell] to make up for what we didn't get. They later packaged all three parts as one game which is what you have. Play the game knowing that you have the entire thing in hand. It's gorgeous; rather difficult in spots; and is still most beautiful adventure game I'e ever played.

[NOTE; Back about 17 years ago I wrote some pretty comprehensive reviews of all three games. They may still be on Mr. Bills Adventure Land somewhere]

Thanks for the reply, The Haze. So could you please go a bit in more detail? That would be great. How can I tell which part of the game does belong to
which of the three parts (main game, two expansions)? Do the expansions simply add content in the sense that ages are added?
Or will exiting content /ages bee modified by an extension as well? How does it work with the end sequences? Was the end sequence of the main game cut from the game? Or do I get to see all three end sequences?

You're getting 15 year old thoughts here, but I'll do some research tomorrow and let you know if I have missed anything. The original URU was, and is, and large, long game. The two expansion packs are each much shorter. Pack 1 (To D'ni) can't be played until you have finished URU. Pack 2 can't be played until you finish pack 1. basically if you have 1 disk you will play one long game. What you do NOT have is another MYST game. Here the concept is much different. You are basically exploring an architectural site wherein the D'ni lived. Your directions and goals will be defined in the first section of the game before you get to the site. A person named Yeesha will direct you, so when you meet her pay attention. You will also, eventually, arrive at a Relto; pay attention there too.

I am trying like crazy not to include spoilers here. (If you want them find a walkthrough.) There are a couple of problems along the way and one spot in one of the expansion packs that will drive you nuts. You will probably need a walk through and there are several around.

Here's a better phrased recap. The three different games are NOT linear. You can play each one in any order. HOWEVER, you will have to finish URU before you can play "To D'ni." and you will have to finish to "To D'ni" before you play "The path of the Shell." [Important note here, which will make sense once you get to the Relto; in your single disk version the expansion packs are probably not labeled or differentiated at all. They will be in the Relto.] Be assured that you will know at once when you reach the end, but it will a gentle and pleasant surprise, not a shocking one.

A final note; it's really one game, not three. play it; clear through the beginning; get to the Relto and much will be made clear. Enjoy

Thanks for one more reply, The Haze. Really appreciated that you are taking the time to help me out, which makes me almost
feeli bad for asking one more follow-up question wink One thing still isn't clear to me. On the one hand you write:
'The three different games are NOT linear. You can play each one in any order
and then
'HOWEVER, you will have to finish URU before you can PLAY "To D'ni."

In the second statement, did you mean to write

'HOWEVER, you will have to finish URU before you can FINISH "To D'ni." ?

So if 'PLAY' was replaced with 'FINISH' it would make sense to me :-)

Btw, I don't have the discs anymore (my gaming buddy has them, though. I puchased Complete Chronicles on Steam.

Let us try this: "You will have to finish URU before you can start "To D'ni" and will have to finish "To D'ni" before you start " The path of the shell. " However, the three sections on a newer version may not be clearly differentiated except for changes on your Relto. My references to "Changes in the Relto" will be obvious after you finish URU.

Gotta go because I'm on my phone and I hate my phone.

Mike, Thanks for bringing up this game. Loved it when it came out and forgot I bought it at Steam and installed it. I finally found all of the cloths at the beginning of the game and moved on. joy wavegirl

Thanks, The Haze. I guess we just have to start playing, maybe it gets a bit clearer then.
Have fun, TLC smile

Doggone it, TLC, I’m stuck like you. Now I too am intrigued and will have to dig out my old game, reinstall, and replay it. At least I will know if I told him all the correct stuff. URU, here I come!

Mike, See what you started. lol I don't remember the names of the areas but I was stuck after getting the power going and getting into that bucket within 5 seconds. It was much easier when I changed it to first-person view. Have fun if you both start playing it. wavegirl

Surprisingly, I made it through the cleft and to the Relto with no trouble at all. I was quite impressed with myself until I realized I have no idea what to do now. Ah well, "Excelsior."

Haze, I'm going through that now. I'm in the Teledahn age and don't know what to do. My main problem is the controls, I originally played on a desktop, it feels much different on a laptop, and have had my character walking/running in circles. woozy

I am having the same problems, but it’s probably due to my awkwardness. I (Blushingly) admit that I’m still using a desktop, and still am having those problems.

TLC, good morning. It struck me last evening that it has probably been 8 years or so since I last played this game. I had forgotten how beautifully detailed most of it is. I had also forgotten how incredibly complicated some of the puzzles are. I find myself straining my aged (74) brain. I made it through Teledahn and am fighting Gahreesen now.
