Whew Hoo. Thanks mike_bn!

I never played these games though I have them on disc. I actually just downloaded the other 3 games last week with the hope that I will finally get around to playing them. I thought I might have to play the 3rd game from my disc though, so I am glad this is finally coming to Steam.

Have fun!

Oldbroad, everybody who loves myst-games MUST play the Rhem series. If you want to know more about the Rhem series (Rhem II in particular) I recommend the following review:
https://www.eblong.com/zarf/gamerev/rhem2.html
For me, the reviewer perfectly conveys why the game is so great for puzzle-lovers. Also, it is one of my favorite reviews ever for many reasons. It is very entertaining and it is obvious that it was written by quite a clever guy.

The reviewer, Andrew Plotkin, also writes interactive fiction games among other things. You can read about him here.

And you can visit his website here.

Just wanted to say that Rhem III SE is out since Thursday. We started playing. I don't remember exactly, but I think its
15 years since we played Rhem III and I remember almost nothing - which is a good thing, it almost feels like playing a new game smile
And of course I am stuck already, how else could it be, It's Rhem. Loving every minute so far.

I am really enjoying Rhem III SE. I breezed through the main game in around 10 hours (I played the original version 12 years ago and forgot all the solutions) and then managed to access the new area.

The new area might be the most difficult collection of puzzles in any Rhem games I have seen so far, I have been stuck for a while smile I also posted a thread in Hints/Help section, feel free to post in there if you got more progress than me smile

@Kemal: 10 hours only is pretty impressive! I am 6-7 hours in and I have solved I would say at most 50%. Many puzzles still open.
I lost 1,5 hours at the beginning, though, just because I failed to look up at a certain place. Since then, I am constantly progressing
and for half of the puzzles in front of me I have a pretty good understanding what needs to be done - at least I i think so. Still I feel it will definitely
take longer than 10 hours to get to the new area. But I will not rush, I want to enjoy the feeling of exploration a bit longer. Who knows how many
years will pass until the final game Rhem V will be released.

I want to end this post by thanking Knut for his constant dedication to this series for so many years. In the world of adventures, no one has
brought so much joy to me than he did. Creating such an epic series on his own is truly remarkable. It is simply amazing how one person can create 8 games of such quality while doing many time-consuming other things like composing and painting as well.

Hello mike_bn. I actually got a bit lucky in some places and discovered some hotspots by chance, which can easily make you lose 1-2 hours.

When you say you got stuck right at the beginning, I have a feeling I know where it is smile

Is it the hidden ladder(s) on the wall at the beginning of the corridor that leads to the elevator? I got stuck there too and totally found it by chance. I can definitely see how one can lose 2-3 hours looking for that.

I also skipped the extra/hidden puzzle. I remember clues for that puzzle were extremely well hidden and I was really excited about getting into the new SE area soon. If you hunt clues for that I think you can add another 3-4 hours of gameplay.

In addition, I think main part of Rhem III is kind of the easiest entry in the series (along with Rhem I). For instance I recently played Rhem II SE too and it took me something like 21 hours to beat, including the new area. I vaguely remember that Rhem IV SE being very difficult as well.

That being said, the new area in Rhem III SE is driving me crazy (in a good way)! I believe I spent something like 4.5 hours and only managed to solve a single puzzle. It is not like I am missing a hotspot too, the area is very small and there are a lot of clues around. I just can't seem to find the correct correlations laugh It had been a while since I felt this miserable in a puzzle adventure game, thank you Knut smile

Yes I also believe we are so lucky to have Knut and his Rhem games. Mega intricate puzzle adventures are probably one of the most niche genres of computer games. They are also by far my favorite genre, the possibility of having a Rhem V one day gets me so excited!

With sheer will and lots of coffee, I managed to beat Rhem III SE! The new area totally got me, got stuck there for a long time but eventually figured it out. This new SE area is significantly more difficult than the previous SE areas, although it is a small one (bigger than Rhem I SE area, but smaller than Rhem II SE area). Anyway, it was great to visit Rhem III again, this game also tells that there is going to be a Rhem V at some point, hence the wait starts...

Kemal, congrats for solving the game. I did not read your post on the hint forum because I will try to solve the game without any hints
(not sure if I will succeed, as what you mentioned about the new area sounds scary)

I am super impressed by your speed. I googled how many crystals one needs to find (I dont consider this a spoiler because
it is not a solution to any puzzle) and when I read how many one needs to find I was shocked ;-) I will definitely need 20 hours
I think as I only have one! Are you sure you really only played 10 hours? I noticed that gamers have the tendency to underestimate
their playing time ;-) I mean even if you solve every puzzle almost immediately, it takes some time executing the solution.
And all this running back and forth and taking notes also takes time, so 10 hours really sounds quick.

I did not remember that there was a hidden extra puzzle in the first version of Rhem III. But don't worry, you did not spoil anything for me,
as long as you dont give away any puzzle solutions, that is fine for me. (I did not read what you posted above regarding your assumption
where I was stuck because I am to afraid to read something I do not know yet).

One question about the new area. What you wrote sounds daunting. wink When you look back on the new puzzles after solving them,
would you say the solutions made perfect sense and you were only stuck because they were hard? Or do some puzzle solutions
feel absurd? (I highly doubt it, because Knut has proven to be an exceptional puzzle designer, but then again, no one is perfect)
Please not a single tiny spoiler! ;-)

Hello mike_bn, always a pleasure talking about Rhem with you!

Thanks for your kind words, but like I mentioned, I got a little bit lucky with hotspots and my minds was in the right setting because I finished Rhem II SE like a month ago. Given those circumstances I think 10 hours is ok. Steam told me how much time I spent in the game, I am not sure how accurate it is, but it seemed about right to me.

Another thing which helped me with speed, I don't take much notes with pen and paper. Instead, I use my smart phone camera to take pictures of the screen. That cuts down a lot of time, and it really makes accessing clues much faster. I have been playing puzzle adventures this way for the last couple of years and it really enhanced my experience. I only use pen and paper when a computation is needed.

Of course, I am very careful about spoilers, solving these games on your own is a satisfaction you can't really get anywhere else. Feel free to look at the part in my previous post after you finish the game.

Yes the new area is a bit terrifying, but do not worry, it is totally fair and logical. I understand your concern regarding the difficulty, but after solving it I was angry at myself (not Knut!) for not seeing the solutions straight away.

Hurry up and finish the game so we can discuss it with spoilers smile

Hi Kermal, it would be a pleasure to talk about Rhem with you.
It will take some time, though. I am not rushing through the game and also it is not my best peformance.
I was not very observant and it took me a while. I now have all crystals and am at a loss what to do.
There are basically only two places where I can imagine to be able to pogress but one has symbols I never saw anywhere
before. So I either missed a hint or jsut can see the meaning of the puzzle symbols.

I will post once I reached the new area.

Hey mike_bn, sure I totally understand you wanting to take your time. I finished it too quickly and now my life feels empty smile

By the way, I know you hate spoilers, but I can always provide you spoiler-free hints and/or little nudges in the right direction.

Good luck with all the challenges.

Kemal, no hints or nudges yet, please wink I progressed now and am in the new area. I LOVED the puzzle to get access to it (the puzzle to get the green b.) - Knut at his best :-) I solved one more puzzle to get in the new building and now know what you mean. This looks hard already. I have an idea though, but
I did not continue. I will play with a friend next tuesday (each plays on his own notebook and we don't give hints to each other)

Let's chat when I have either solved the game or are so desparate that I need a hint wink

One question, Kemal: You mentioned that the newa area is not that big. Lets say I manage to solve this puzzle to open the only locked door the
building has. Is that all already or how many puzzles are left then?

Btw, I also solved the bonus puzzle from Rhem III, 1st edition. But the order is to play the new SE-area first, so I am not sure whether I
was at the bonus puzzles new area 12 years ago or not. I think I remember having solved it back then, I had forgotten that it was optional.

Congrats on reaching the new area mike_bn, yes the puzzle to obtain the button is awesome smile It was one of my favorite moments in SE.

I completely lost my mind at the point you just reached. That is one of the most complex and multi-layered puzzles I have ever seen. However it is completely fair, I lost a lot of time because of some wrong assumptions. Hopefully it will be easier for you.

Yes, the new area is small, you are almost done smile There is only one more area after unlocking the door, which has two more puzzles. Those puzzles are not that difficult, but they are a bit tricky, you really need to pay attention to everything.

Good luck!

Thanks for the informations, Kemal. This is exactly what I like to read, answers without spoiling anything smile Yes, the task to solve this next puzzle
seems daunting. Btw, when I mentioned I had an idea I was referring only to one small subtask - as you mentioned, the puzzle seems to have so many elements and so far I only observed one thing which I am going to check on tuesday. The rest looks utterly confusing and overwhelming. I haven't really started working on that puzzle. I briefly walked around, looked at everything for moment and then stopped because I want to wait for my friend and not play alone too much - even though I would have loved to continue.

Yes, the puzzle to get the button was awesome, definitely my favorite so far. I can't help to be proud that I solved it pretty quickly (but not instantly and the revelation how it works was so gratifying, so I just can't resist to brag about it here :-) ) Because the Rhem series is so dear to me, I am sometimes afraid that Knut runs out of ideas as he already had so many great ones and it would be normal to run out of ideas eventually, but he keeps proving me wrong. This one was truly original. I am always amazed about how he picks some existing puzzle design-concept and twists it in a way that something new is created (I cannot be more precise what I mean by that as I don't want to spoil anything for other readers)

Seriously, how good are the RHEM games? May they forever be available.

Flotsam, oh yes! I really hope that Knut stays motivated to end his series with some epic final 5th game. I think the idea
to connect all 4 Rhem parts and add a 5th area is awesome (as Knut posted this on Steam, I consider this official information,
I would not have mentioned it here if he had only told me that in confidence in one of our emails)
Of course, we will have to wait for a long time now until Rhem V will come, but I'd rather wait 5-7 more years and
have a really great final game instead of just 2-3 years and one with lesser quality.

Update: I just left a positive review on Steam. It's short and not very original, but every positive review helps to push the game in the ranking.
So maybe someone wants to contribute by also writing one. (Seems to take a while until a review gets published, I cannot find mine yet)

I started playing Rhem from its very beginning when Knut sent me Rhem I in a simple envelope with an Update CD for Windows and 2 game disks. Rhem 1 was one of my great joys of adventure gaming.

The Rhem games during the early days were considered almost as a niche within niche since they appeared to be almost pure puzzling with little story. It didn’t help that they were up against the Myst series which had the benefit of superior production and a little more of a storyline. Because of that, and because of the challenge Rhem presented, at first, they weren’t rated very high. But over time, the consistent quality of the games and the increasing demand for challenging puzzlers resulted in the Rhem games getting consistent high rankings.

However, just as the Myst series had its own attractive qualities, Rhem, within the category of puzzling vs story-based games, provided a very different experience. With a lot left to the imagination, I was able to envision myself wandering within Rhem with a challenge to get myself out. The puzzles in the Rhem games are nothing short of phenomenal! Anyone who has played a lot of puzzle-based AGs can appreciate the gift Knut Mueller has given us, especially since almost 2 decades later he has provided us a reason to play them for the first time or return to them in the form of the SE updates with added areas.

Btw, another great thing about the Rhem games are how much gaming is provided with so few system requirements which have not increased to any great extent the way most AGs have!

Snap! I had other things planned and now it seems I’ll be heading to Rhem 3 SE.

Edit: Does anyone know if it will be available for direct download from the Rhem site? Right now it appears to only be on Steam. I purchased all the othe SEs from the Rhem site. Knut has kept an eye on this forum in the past, maybe he’ll stop by. smile

Kemal, we played om Tuesday. I spend I would say 1,5 hours of loooking at all things present in the bulding.
I realized smaller things (which manipulation affects which objects, trying to understand rules etc). So some progress but
absolutely no results as far as actual solving anything is concerned.. I stopped playing after1,5 hours because I had too much wine and being slightly drunk, I realized that it was going to be impossible to solve anyrthing ;-) (I rarely drink when playing, but this timeit just happened)

I got up next morning, determined to figure out at least something subtantial and after 30minutes I had a breakthrough! :-)

I have the 3.digit codes and also obsvered that there two codes,, a light and a dark one.

Great to hear that you are making progress mike_bn! I really love that part of the puzzle you just solved, isn't it great? Have fun with the rest of the puzzle smile Actually sometimes a little bit of drinking helps while playing wink

By the way, I sometimes talk to people on Steam, and it seems like a lot of people also get stuck in the area after you open the door. So it seems like you still have some nice puzzles left after you solve this one.

Yes, they are my favorite puzzle adventure series of all time. Like mike_bn mentioned, there is just something amazing the way Knut's puzzle design that no other game can capture. Nothing comes close to feeling of satisfaction you get after solving a Rhem game with minimal help.

Since Knut can only build games so fast, I really hope that we get other games who are influenced by Rhem/Knut somewhere in the future. It is depressing that we only get to play games like this so rarely..
